I mentioned this in a bunch of other threads but I figured I'd make a dedicated thread to answer questions and just address issues.
Anyway. If you don't know, 1 Apple ID can support up to 10 devices. What this means is that the content bought through that Apple ID can be shared over these 10 devices. Restaurants and many other businesses have already been using this for awhile now so I thought I'd give it a try, it works and its awesome.
What you'll need is good friends (at least 1), new 32g+ iPads, and a general apple ID. The iPads will do everything through the apple ID, if your friends want something on their iPad they can use iTunes cards and load it on their own iPad individually, besides that, once something is bought it can be downloaded by any of the other devices for free. Long story short, buying 1 codex supplies up to 10 of your friends. With no credit card assign to the Apple ID it makes it as safe as it is going to get.
The best part? iTunes cards are on sale for 20 to 50% off regularly, just google 'itune card deals" and your area and you can hunt them down. If you do it smart, you can get all your dexes at $3 each.
GWs release schedule is getting pretty nuts and at a book every 2 months that is $360 a year + the DLC stuff. With even 2 people that cost is knocked down to half that amount, if you get a solid group of 10 people that amount is less then $36 a year for all the books. Some of you will say "but I have to buy an iPad!" That's true. But after a few months the iPad has paid for itself. Its short term loss for long term gain. Plus the digital books get the FAQs updated automatically.
This is pretty much the answer to getting around GWs insane prices, and it is 100% legal, and GW cannot harm you in any way as it is apart of Apples store policies. It wont change any time soon, and GW being butt hurt will not sway apple in the slightest.
Take the fight to 'em lads.

Sharing an apple ID with friends, no matter how close? No, I don't think so. So many many issues with that.

Hence why you make a general one not associated with your own personal apple ID. Where's the issue? There is no credit card or any other important information is connected to the ID. And they cant just take the content and run, trying to load it with a separate apple ID wipes the original content. All content is bought with iTunes cards, from one person. Then it is then free to download to the others without need of a password.
GW is not big brother, no paranoia required.

Its part of Apples policy, they know sharing happens. That's what its capped at 10 devices. GW cant do anything, it will be like when they tried to ask eBay to not allow their stuff on there.

Might as well just torrent the things if you're going to do something like this.
Fairly sure the 10 device limit means 10 devices owned by the same person if you check the small print.

To be fair you don't even need to do this with non-apple devices. Just splid the cost of a digital edition codex between buddies and then you have it. So why do all this hoop jumping when you can do it for cheaper and easier with regular digital editions?
(seriously, 10 people means $3-$4 per codex)

Because that is copyright infringement, assuming you make a separate copy of the file for every person.

You cant prove ownership though. Whose to say I didn't buy all 10? Maybe I walked into the store with the person and bought it and gave it to them?
And sure you can torrent it, but the effort to get a good version with the quick links intact would be difficult, and it wouldn't auto update with changes. GW doesn't give a gak about ethics when they split content, copy paste content and then raise the price. So why should we give a damn? And its not piracy, its group buying/ownership. Automatically Appended Next Post: weeble1000 wrote:

It's not about Apple lawyers vs GW lawyers. it's about Apple Lawyers being advised of an abuse of the terms of service by GW lawyers and coming after you.
Those businesses probably get around it by owning all the devices being used. A group purchase plan may not fit through this loophole.
At the very least I expect that if this sort of activity becomes known to Apple you'd see a drop in the number of allowed copies shortly follow, probably with some sort of tricky ITunes update that got you to agree to several of the extra copies disappearing.
Or, in other words, promoting this on a public site is a bad idea.

Why even check the fine print? Why talk about lawyers? The chances of GW or really anyone doing anything is 0..
This is all semantics and "I believe this is right" as it always happens someone talks about getting a GW product for cheaper than the crazy retail price. I will say, it's gimmicky.. If you're saving 90%, I'd simply just save 100%. Spend the money you saved by buying 50$ worth of GW product..
They get their money and you get more value.

Not true, the iPad can download what it wants from the apple store just for that iPad and wont automatically go on the others. Also it is not against their terms and conditions, its there so one ID can support an entire families worth of devices. Apple is good like that. They allow a certain amount of sharing.

Group buying is not piracy. So I'll sleep just fine on the money I'll save. What you allow is what will continue, if you want to keep supporting and justifying GWs terrible behaviour then go nuts. I will continue to cut GW out of my game by every legal means necessary.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Herzlos wrote:Isn't the device associated with an account, so you can't have your stuff and the shared stuff at the same time?
The 10 devices share whatever is purchased on the Apple ID. If I wanted to put a song on my iPad #10 then I would just download it from the iTunes store app that comes with the iPad. The other iPads will get a notification if they want to download it via iCloud.
And guys this is a great way to share with siblings, right off the bat you can go half on every book. Even sharing with 1 buddy/brother/sister/wife/hooker/whatever is 50% off.
As for this "transferable" business, lets say my brother is across the country, and doesn't have the Apple ID password. He can text me, I can download it instantly on my iPad or computer, and it will pop up on his iPad (that I bought). Apple ALLOWS sharing, but only for 10 devices. If any of those iPads got new content from a different Apple ID it wipes the old content. If you don't like legal discounts then keep paying what ever "historical exchange rate" GW is using today.
Don't support GWs practices, and hit them where you can legally.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!
