So I played an 1850 game of Dark Angels (me) vs Tyranids somehow managed to win despite all appearances that I should have lost. My friend had some of the worst luck with his dice that game. Also please forgive me since I'm still learning the names of all his units and models, there will be a lot of "unit that does x" verbology. He brought a swarmlord and venomthrope and on turn one failed to manifest warp lance against my Landraider Crusader. His flying hive tyrent failed to even glance my Razorback that had my warlord/command squad. In my turn I shoot a zonethrope (generates cover for his tyranids) with a lascannon. He had a 2+ cover save...rolled a 1. His turn two, he brought a mawloc in on my Librarian/Command squad and thanks to a PFG he only killed one marine and mishapped the mawloc...rolled a 1 and lost it. He failed a couple more times to manifest warp lance against my landraider and the one time he landed it he missed the to hit roll. He had some gargoyals that were going to go get an objective that would have earned him a couple points but they were out of synaps and he rolled and they went to ground. Towards the end, I had a drop pod and 5 marines on an objective and it was essentially, he had to push me off to have a chance at winning. He rolled a perils of the warp manifesting a power and then...rolled a 1, losing his warlod and any chance of kicking me off the objective. Those are just the highlights but it was a true comedy of dice errors.

I know that dice are apart of the game but it really got to be sad. Despite all that, he was still murdering me on the table and I can only think of how the game would have gone had even a few of those dice rolls gone half way decent. I will however take the win as I don't get many of them. Anyone else have this or something like this happen to them?

Many, many times. I've had lots of games where I screw something up and I just KNOW that if I were in my opponent's shoes, I could have crushed me. One of the best skills for a 40k player to develop is opportunism: the ability to make the most out of an opponent's error or out of a miraculous stroke of luck (good or bad).

There have been some games that I won purely through controlling the objective, when one more turn would have seen me tabled. Sure, it's a win, but it doesn't feel like win.

Well tyere have been a couple games where I got my ass kicked but played to the obejective and managed to pull out a win. There was one game I played Eldar (me) vs nids in a scenario concocted by my opponent thatbgave him all sorts of stupid advantages over me... I pulled out the win by holding the lone objective w 3 dire avengers having not killed more than a small handful of termagants and hormagaunts in a 2000 point game.

Thats probably the most dramatic example I can give... there was also the one time I was demoing warmachine to a new player and was bending over backwards trying to lose to give the guy some encouragement, and no matter how badly I played and how much sdvice I gave the guy I could not lose

My last Game of 6th edition. I was playing my Brothers Necrons with my Tyranids in a large game 4k points I wanna say. non-apoc, and unbound wasn't a thing then , so the armies were legit.

By turn two I had failed so many many dice rolls and lost so much of my army , my brother actually said he felt sorry for me ( I reminded him not to be, cause that is the game)

My flying Hive tyrants were destroyed, my swarm lord and guard were totally made useless by the sheer amount of carnage to one side of the field. My battle plan was in shambles, however I managed to re-group from a what looked like it was going to be a slaughter, come up with some new plans on the fly and squeak out a narrow victory.

My brother says its still one of his fav games hes ever played, even with his loss.

Played a game several weeks ago with my marines against some orcs... He was so focused on the secondary objectives of the game that he never relized I controlled both primary objectives and I won. It's amazing how never forgetting what the victory conditions are will usually always help.

Played several team games where, had the game continued another turn, we would have been tabled. But we won due to objectives and victory points. Heavy casualties, but we secured the objectives

Sure, all the time

Usually, because an opponent misses something or makes a terrible mistake, but occasionally because I cleverly manipulate them into making an error, and very rarely because of epic dice rolls.

Didn't win per se ,but got a draw. My opponent could win 17/3 just by saying pass and doing nothing But he decided he to stack up on small points. He had to move to get more of my units in range , but it would take him off objectives. Not much was needed 2-3" and he had battle focus, so no problem to get back. What followed was him killing some of my dudes , but not runing far enough to be in range of objectives. He actualy asked me if he can take back his turn, and list it as win "because he was winning anyway at the begining of turn".

Every game I played under the Witch Hunter codex.

Memorable tipping points...

Inquisitorial Stormtroopers with shotguns getting assaulted by a huge mob of Lesser Daemons, fighting them off without taking a single casualty, then banishing them utterly the next turn.

Seraphim with Inferno Pistols + Spirit of the Martyr = unkillable lone heroine. She must have won me seven or eight games as the last woman standing back in the day.

All the time, playing for objective is fun

Though less now as college has taken up more of my time and I don't play as often (and don't collect new models much at all).

Many times, but the most memorable was in 6th. My Wolves and Guard spent 6 turns getting pasted by the new Tau, and I was 3 points down going into the final assault phase, with a depleted squad of Grey Hunters about a foot from an objective. Between them and it, a full strength Hammerhead. They need 9" to assault, roll, and make it in. Score just enough glances to smash it up, and roll to consolidated. It comes up 3", I move them towards the objective.

At the end of the turn, and the game, they are about 1/6th of an inch into its scoring radius! So, a draw... Until I realise they also score Linebreaker! Victory!

On moon miranda.

Many times. On both sides.

Sometimes the dice just aren't with one of the players. If one side never rolls anything higher than a 3 on their dice, they're going to lose no matter how good their generalship, and that happens. Can't do anything about it.

Sometimes the mission is just badly designed. Happens all the time in Maelstrom missions where one side gets good rolls or "gimme" objectives (e.g. "cast psychic power to get a point, cast 3 or more to get D3 points...sweet my Daemons army has 5 Psykers and a total of 12 mastery levels!"), or missions built entirely around Kill Points where one side's army has been crushed but because it simply had fewer units and the other side had more, it still wins despite having been soundly trounced. KP's are dumb.

Often, an opponent may forget something simple that creates a gap for you to exploit at the last moment.

I played Epic. During my first action which was to fire my Cannons of Khorne, the first one misfired. Exploded then scattered. Taking the next one, and the process of explosion and scattering repeated taking out the last of the trifecta. Which as you can probably guess. Exploded, scattered and took out a good chunk of my infantry. My very first dice roll resulted in roughly a third of my army annihilated. My opponent nearly pissed himself laughing. As did I. A prime example of a clusterf..k if I ever saw one.. Haha

I once won a game of 40K when my 7 plague marines killed a Bloodthirster in one turn, after he'd failed all of his to hit and to wound rolls on my sergeant, and all of his armor saves and FnP 4+.

That turned the tide, and my last units basically just tarpitted him away from the relic that he could no longer steal.

The thing is, I was losing suite badly up to that point, as my deployment was pretty bad, and my army list was not very good against his.

I played a game a few weeks back. My IF SM vs CSM. I was playing a semi fluffy list going for lots of Boltguns to make use of my IF CT rerolling 1's with them. So I had a couple of Tactical Squads in Rhino's, a Bike Squad, Devastator Squad, Command squad in Drop pod with a Captain (shooty not CC). He had a Daemon Prince, Berserkers in a Rhino, two CSM Squads holding rear objectives, and a Defiler.

Before the game even started it wasn't going my way, his Khorne sergeant became a second DP! Come first second turn, due to some horrible plays by me, my Bikes are all gone, one tactical squad is down to 5 and in combat with berserkers and a DP. Command squad is down to Apothecary and Captain (With the Primarchs Wrath and PF) and they are in CC with the defiler, and my second Tactical squad's Rhino has immobilized itself on a hill. Just went downhill from there really come turn 4 the only things I had left was my Captain and Apothecary (Still in combat!) 5 Tactical marines looking at a DP with another DP to their left, the Devs what were placed quite badly as to just have a tea party and do nothing all game. I think he had just lost his Berserkers.

However T4 changed it for me, my Captain died to the defiler (finally) but the Apothecary takes it out with his Melta Bomb!, my 5 man Tacticals put a wound on the DP with a Krak grenade, in the CSM turn the DP charges, takes another wound from a Krak grenade! The DP then whiffs its CC attacks and i bring it down to 1 wound with further Krak grenades, Truly these are demolition masters! in T5 my Apothecary hides out of LOS to hold a rear CSM objective and take line breaker. The DP fails to kill all the Tacticals in the center and cannot move to hold the central objective. So it was 3 Objectives to me 1 to Him, I had line breaker and First Blood. He had Slay the Warlord.

He rolls to continue, we don’t. I win with 1 Tactical marine, 1 Apothecary, 5 Devs (still drinking tea) an Immobilized Rhino doing nothing, A Drop Pod doing nothing, and a Rhino sitting on my rear objective. If we went 1 round longer I would undoubtedly have been tabled. One of the most enjoyable games so far for me.

I'm not sure, I dont play CSM so I didn't question him. Reading the codex just then if the upgrade for the pre game roll was a "Gift of Mutation" then I say that he played it wrong. No matter was still very enjoyable.

I think Gift of Mutation says "Reroll Apotheosis", so if you roll it a second time, it sticks (since you can't reroll a reroll).

I can't think of anytime I won where I should have lost. I can think of plenty of times where I lost when I should have lost.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

For me, it's not so much as winning where I should have lost. It is more of making a comeback when your opponent takes an early Victory Point lead. These situations usually arrive from giving up First Blood or a Space Marine drop pod line breaker scenario. You just keep focused on the main objectives and keep battling back to achieve victory.

If your opponent gets an early "casualty lead" an ill-disciplined commander/player can completely forget about the mission objectives in their lust for blood, to table you. A smart commander/player will use that to his advantage.

Cowards will be shot! Survivors will be shot again!

I can remember a game I should have lost. It was back in 6th and my army was being ripped apart. I went first and my land raider blew up his defiler for first blood. In his turn he used his land raider to blow up my land raider. I was losing the game that first turn with no sign of hope. The final battle was my Master of the Forge (He was also my last model) vs. Typhus and a hellbrute. My over watch put a wound on Typhus and the combat began. The hellbrute failed to hit and it was just Typhus and my guy left. My guy only did two wounds. Typhus attacked and he whiffed with his attacks. He still did one wound though. He failed his force weapon roll so my master of the forge was still alive! We rolled to see if the game continued and it didn't! I won by one point when we counted the points. I got first blood and that was the only point scored in the whole game. I had my master of the forge with one wound left. He had a 3 man obliterator squad, Typhus, a heldrake, and a hellbrute left.

I was running white scars with grav guns at a tournament. I had minor DA allies (to get Samuel with my CM and Khan). I was going against TauDar with a SeerStar.

I deployed second, seized, scouted, alphaed and wiped the SeerStar out turn one. After that it went pretty well. I got a lightning claw command squad with bikes with three big HQs into CC with Tau and ran them down/tabled them.

If I played that guy three more times, pretty sure I wouldn't have won another one.

My Sisters army is about to have its whole center collapsed by a big unit of Assault Termites + HQ, and you could just tell that was going to be the game.
