It has become apparent to me that this thread has become more than just a blurb about High Elves from the IoB set. I'll talk a little bit about the army you'll find herein, my trials and travails, and how I came to fall in love with all the Elves.

I'm sure we've all got stories like this, where you pick up an army, or two in my case, and you get into it, but it's just not working. You try a couple schemes and still nothing, so you leave the models sit in a sea of primed minis and you move on. I play 40k, Mordheim, and Fantasy, so I've got lots of projects, it's easy to lose motivation for one project as another crops up. I had no idea I'd be painting Space Wolves today, but that's how it happens you know? You see a picture or read a story and next thing you know the last project gets put on hold while you kit bash a Wolf Preist! Well that's how it went for the IOB set. I got started on the elves and the rats and soon my Marines began to beckon the brush and next thing you know... Well one day I sat down with a Swordmaster and tried a new scheme. I had already planned on a classic red and white scheme, but it left me feeling iffy. Red isn't that great a colour to get even, neither is white. I realized my elves had lost their appeal. This was mainly due to the labour intensive paint scheme. This wouldn't do! So I got to work on a simpler scheme and next thing you know I was down one unit and on to the next!

Here we are now, a year almost after I first got the IOB set, and 2 months after the first Sinister elf was completed and I'm nearly done the army. How do I feel about it? Well let's just say I, really happy with the way my elves turned out. Now it's time to start thinking about those rats!

Except for the matte black there, that was just to touch up the spray job...

Thanks! This paint scheme really has me revved up to paint the Elves!

Between the Marines, Orks, Space Wolves, and Skaven, the High Elves have gotten the shorter end of the stick when it comes to my enthusiasm. A shame really!

For the edge of the bases, i would say keep them black. In my experience it seems to give them a cleaner look. Additional to that, when their ranked up in a movement tray, you really wont be seeing any work on the base edges, not the way you would with a 40k Unit.

EDIT:: And i almost forgot to say, That's a great scheme.

They look really cool. It's a great feeling when you come up with an easy scheme that looks awesome. Leave the edges black. You can flock the edges of the movement trays.

Great, I drastically prefer the idea of focusing on the Dark Side of WFB Elves (especially now Malekith rules them all). I also agree the bases should be black.

But I wanna paint em!

No, haha I guess I'll go with the majority vote this time. I am gonna have to check out this Khaine book though, it sounds interesting. The army book for high elves hints at some pretty awful times, and they don't have a very promising future. It's kind of hard to read that then look at some of the models in the showcase... Those Ellyrions! Damn dudes, that awesome heraldry and you picked pink and white?

More Sinister Elves!

This time we have a couple Sea Guard, the musician and a spearelf. Also along for he ride, an Ellyrion Reaver!

Tips for his banner? Don't worry it's removable!

I'm not sure abut his horse either... Any tips for doing horses? I kind of wanted to keep them black and have different coloured manes...

Close up of the Reaver.

You're probably wondering about the banner... I figured since I occasionally want to charge these guys into combat (not snipping those spears off no matter what the beards say!) they should have some combat res. Also a banner was an easier conversion than an instrument of some kind. Plus it's removable so, when I need those 10 points elsewhere it's no big deal. Plus it looks sweet and ties in the wood elf models when the army is assembled.

I'm just afraid that this banner will eclipse the Battle Standard!

Here are some before pics too. These guys are in stage two at this point, just after the first dry brush!

The Dust Griff!

I'm sure that's just a bad habit of players to overlook their cool models in favour of better tactical choices. I plan on using this bloke whenever I can, maybe even grab the Prince on foot model to match.

I know everyone has one of these but I just wanted to show you his base...

Which you can see better here. I tried to make the peg into a tree but am having trouble making suitable leaves, any tips for that?

Here is one of the wood elves I picked up.

Got these 6 wood elves on about 4 sprues, with some bits for 1.99 at value village. Someone thought they were toys! For kids?! Can you believe it? Lol

So I'm considering using them as Shadow Warriors, or perhaps if I can get more, archers. For now I only have 6 so I kind of bitz'd this fellow up to be a Noble. Not sure how to kit him exactly since it seems like Nobles want to melee. Lion cloak and a longbow for little games, toss the reaver bow and shadow armour on him for big games. Who knows! I've only ever played against myself so... Scouting a Noble, the beards are probably wagging!

Alternatively I could just say the wood elves are Sister of Avelorn and use the lot of them a a Mage bunker!

Hey... Could someone maybe scoot this thread over to the blog section? I think If I try I can keep it updated regularly, at least until I run out of IoB minis!

Anyone wanna see some Skaven?

Coming along really nicely (I really need to up my productivity to keep up )

You should make their basing something brighter to contrast with their scheme. Perhaps a snow theme?

I was thinking that too, the bases are a little dark, but I'm far along enough now that I don't want to re-base the ones I have done! I think if I go back and add more colour, perhaps a contrasting static grass?

You could add a bit of snow to each base and really go to town on their movement trays. Do you have any movement trays already? I have a ton I could spare if you need em.
