So, when i started i remember a dreadnought being about $50AUD and the destator come in at about $40, what the hell happened to this hobby? I've taken hiatus for about a year now, and all i can say is that's one hell of a shock to the system seeing devestators being $78AUD! What happened to the hobby company I loved and wanted so much to be a part of? how did this come to be?

Greedy useless feth heads who aren't into the hobby at all but more into making as much money as they can scam out of wargamers. Also I have TONS of sympathy for your aussies, I can't imagine spending that much to play this fething game.

If i recall right they need to ship all merchandise from UK or Us as I guess there's no gw factory down under. Might be awell they switched the fixed exchange ratio of sterling to dollar. Vat increase mite be awell an reason for such massive increase. Ofcourse there has been overall price rise cause of repack of devastators plus gw pushing the sales of rines. Don't expect gw to be dropping prices of sweet boxes try some flgs for some price drops.

#1 cost for shipping is fuel costs. We are at the lowest cost for barrels of oil since 2003. Prices should be down not up.

Yup price per barrel dropped by rough 49% however overall drop of fuel was 9%, it's just one of few posobilites of price rise in Australia the main imho is gw ignoring the smaller markets. Awell devastator box is kind of the box to get now so the prices can be risen even more, grav gun after all is the new black

Imagine how it feels for those of us who remember getting blister packs for under $10 that came with 3 models.

Price escalation is relative to the worth of currency. GW is managed by a team that ensures the real revenues stay constant.

Pricing based on older importing taxes (that are no longer in effect) paired with inflation, quality increases (in some cases), and the like.

Right, but wouldn't a 10 man tac. squad (for example) be roughly the same price (since you would need 4 3-man boxes) with less variety?

It just makes me sad that I'm more ready to go and lok for a cheaper alternative than the real thing, and much more that im taking a break from something i used to do daily.

The way you'd get a tactical squad back in the day would either be a 30-40 dollar box set of plastic and metal hybrid models, a 20 dollar box of monopose "I love my bolter" Marines, or a 6 man multipose plastic kit (although the poses were really limited) for I think 15, then a few blisters with a sergeant, heavy weapon, special weapon, and regular dude. While it let you build up a squad slower over time and for smaller transactions at a time, it probably cost more than the ~$40 it costs for a Tactical squad in today's age, with a lot less variety. This is coming from a guy with an entire 2nd ed retro army who loves this stuff. Some things change for the better.

If you adjust for inflation, a lot of GW's prices haven't really changed all that much in the last 20 years. It might be a little more than it should be, but it's not generally that bad. It can be, but not always. Unless, of course, you're in Australia, and have to pay some ludicrous colony tax and everything costs up to twice what it should.

eBay is your friend. I haven't bought a new model from GW for years. Last buy was a Land Speeder still on sprue for like $22.

If you're comfortable with stripping, there are even better deals around.

Its not that bad, Ill got out to eat or whatever and spend $20-30 easy. I still have models from years ago, but not any hamburgers. Looking through those old catalogues, individual infantry models were expensive. And the kits weren't exactly something to rave about, pretty basic and odd looking (sometimes).

Mostly internet hyperbole, just ignore it. I'd also say the topic relates more to model costs than 40k as a game.

If someone doesn't have the money for new models, they have alternative ways of acquiring them cheaper. You can get any unit in the game secondhand, even unpainted. No way around it. Just requires some effort. There's also alternatives.

Still, in 1999 a box of tac marines cost £10. Now BA tacs cost £26.
According to an American inflation calculator I just used, $10 in 1999 should cost $14.07 now. Now I know that's based on American inflation, but it gives you a decent picture of how GW have been rising prices FAR ahead of inflation.

Do you honestly feel that the quality and quantity of parts in those kits are equal?

You know there would be fewer angry people, if all codex updates were the same. And IG players wouldn't have to ask themselfs why their codex was updated at all or BA players asking themselfs whey they are marines minus the good stuff or GK wondering why they codex is made out of 5 usable models. While at the same time smug eldar players ask what is wrong with 7th ed, when it clearly is perfect.

Some people play the game and are less interested in models, and the price does not help either. For the cost of w40k army one could buy models that can actualy fly with real engines and much more detail then w40k models have.

Yeah but stripping can be demeaning, and you have to work late hours.

We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.

Quantity yes from what I remember. Quality - no.
However, I used to pay £30-£40 for a new computer game. I still pay £30-£40 for a new computer game. I can say for sure after trying to play Tom Clancys Vegas 1 & 2 again the other day that quality has definitely increased despite price staying roughly similar. Same with mobile phones... in fact, unless you are daft enough to pay £300 extra for the picture of an apple on the front of your phone, mobile phones are cheaper than they have ever been! My Samsung A3 is costing me £13 a month for 1000mins 1GB and unlimited texts, with a 2 year contract, it had no up front charges. I remember my Nokia 3310 costing £60 up front and being £25 for 200 minutes and 500 texts a month (there was no 'data' needed back then).
It is in the interests of a company to always try and increase their quality to keep custom and stay at the front of the market, without forcing such high increase of price upon customers. The reason the prices keep getting higher and higher is because they need to make more profit on each box, because of the fact the actual number of sales are decreasing thanks to GW making their customers feel as though they are being ripped off. Its a slippery slope that started a decade ago and has got steeper each year.

:-o. £6 for me and looks decent. Often get shoes from Clarks at the local freeport for £20. The last pair I bought from there have lasted me 2 years and are extremely comfy. As for an Iphone... other phones such as Samsungs are identical, just lacking a letter I in their name and a logo of a partly eaten apple. As mentioned above, they are free here, as long as you pay for a contract with them.

Well compared to the cost of my private yacht, and the helicopter that goes with it, sure, 40k looks cheap.

But then again, no one in their right mind is seriously using non-wargaming products (or other products in the same market segment) as a point of comparison for GW's prices.

Wanna talk about priceless, how about these brilliant comparisons? Amirite!?

Anyways, I'm off to drive one of my twelve super cars, quickly followed by skeet shooting priceless Chinese artifacts.

Ok lets compare it to super cars. Price of a tactical squad in 1999 - £10. Price of a tactical squad now - £25. 150% increase.
Starting price of a 1996 Porche 911 Turbo (in 1996) - $105,000. Starting Price of a 2015 Porche 911 GT3 - $130,000. 24% increase.
Yeh the price may be higher... but you can still compare inflation between old and later improved models.

Even that's incredibly flawed because they're built so differently that the only factor in their cost now and then is not inflation. It also ignores every immensely significant improvements that are real and tangible over that time frame.

Honestly, just stick to comparing similar products. Anything else is just too flawed a comparison to draw any reasonable conclusion.

Might as well compare the hobby of watching grass grow or paint dry.
