How to permanently damage a 3300 yr old relic:
Source: http://news.sky.com/story/1412875/museum-superglues-tutankhamuns-broken-mask
The burial mask of the world's most famous pharaoh, Tutankhamun, has been glued together after a cleaner accidentally broke it.
The 3,300-year-old mask has been permanently damaged after its blue and gold beard was knocked off while it was on display at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
The relic was then hastily stuck together with cheap superglue.
It is not clear when it happened and museum workers have given differing accounts as to how it was damaged, but they all say their co-worker was told to fix it quickly.
One conservator said: "Unfortunately he used a very irreversible material - epoxy has a very high property for attaching and is used on metal or stone but I think it wasn't suitable for an outstanding object like Tutankhamun's golden mask.
"The mask should have been taken to the conservation lab but they were in a rush to get it displayed quickly again and used this quick drying, irreversible material."
The mask reportedly now shows a gap between the face and the beard. Another museum worker added that once the glue had dried on the face of the mask, a colleague used a spatula to remove it, leaving scratches.
The mask was discovered by British archaeologists Howard Carter and George Herbert in 1922, and it revived a worldwide interest in archaeology.
Neither the Antiquities Ministry nor the museum administration could be reached for comment, but museum employees say an investigation into the incident is under way.

How was it even able to be knocked over? Should it be in a display case?

Agreed, this is just utter incompetence, epoxy is fine for sticking toy soldiers together. Priceless relics, not so much...

Obviously it happened when someone was dancing to "Walk like an Egyptian" and wearing the mask and fell over.
Epoxy is not superglue. Either substance could be got off gold easily with solvents. Gold is one of the least reactive substances around.
I'm glad I saw it in London before it got damaged.
Let's send the Elgin Marbles back right now. Surely they will be well taken care of.

Likely the fether was using a floor scrubber. The mask is kept in a case, it could still have broken if it was knocked about inside the case, being 3000 years old and such.
This isn't the first time the chimps at Cairo Museum have fethed up the exhibits. There was some on camera restoration work done by a woman that broke pieces off one of the funerary statues from Turtankhamun's tomb.
Lets see if the video is on YouTube....
...sorry not there. It was on the BBC though some years back.
I also have a very low opinion of Egypts director of antiquities. During an American dig on a royal site in c2010 chief chimp Zahi Hawass dictated a deadline for the excavation based on his schedule, and came down in person for the opening of the sarcophagus. Thing is in archeological work the trick is not to allow yourself to be rushed. The team were rushed to complete the excavation work, and for no better reason than for Hawass ego. Even the opening of the sarcophagus itself is something you need to take a lot of time on, and on the day the team clearly needed more time. and deserves the priority of scheduling, not Hawass' next appointment. He is a prima donna looking for a spotlight, and a piss poor representative of Egyptology.
Did find this though:
http://www.eloquentpeasant.com/2011/01/29/statues-of-tutankhamun-damagedstolen-from-the-egyptian-museum/
In fairness its not the same, its about Egypt being an unsafe place for artifacts rather rthan the Cairo Museum. Interesting that people would smash gold rather than steal it.

Gold is a very malleable metal though. If it gets dented or bent, you've essentially lost the original mask and all you can do is try to restore it back to the way it was.

The mask was not originally one piece. A masterpiece yes, but not one piece. The blue stripes are separate inlaid pieces of lapis lazuli and the beard was a separate piece joined to the main part of the mask when it was made.
In the effort to quickly cover up their embarrassment the chimps probably didn't photograph the two pieces, it would have been very interesting to see how it was joined in the first place.
I think there is more to this story. I wonder if its dented or if some of the lapis lazuli was also broken off and reglued.

I feel so upset when ancient artefacts are broken by stupid people.
Especially when they are the people looking after the blinking thing.
