About time, slacker!

Very nice write-up, Bill. I had a blast, and I'm looking forward to the stomping we're going to hand out with our all-zombie-Kroot list in next year's team tourney.

Would a hand-written list bother you so much if it had been written really neatly?

And a cool report. The team tourney looked like a log of fun.

Nice report C99. I still laugh my butt off when I see that handwritten list....it looks like an ork wrote it...so classic. That kid plays at the store I used to work at back home...which makes it even more funny. So in all of your games with IG how well did the cyclops vehicles perform? I am thinking of getting some and wanted to know if they were worth it. Capt k

I've been waiting for this report. Nice job.

I have a few questions for you. Do you think that mech guard is stronger than all infantry guard? I'm doubtful, but curious. You pulled off some all important mulligan rolls that got you first turn that really helped your situation, and when going up against the shootiest armies ended up in scenarios with a big advantage such as night fight for two turns against the IG and reverse escelation against the Word Bearers. I do see two advantages. You do not have to worry about target priority rolls and you are far more mobile. Those advantages may outweight the disadvatages of poor side armor and potential crippling with one roll. What is your opinion? Do you go up against fewer tankbusting armies in v4 now that rhino rush is dead?

Also, I saw for the first time last year in your Adepticon report the cyclops demo charges. What exactly are they? I must admit I have never shelled out the cash for the IA books. If I did purchase the lastest edition would it have all updated rules, or do you have to get all of the IA books to get all of the rules?

Let me see...out of eight games:
Gladiator 1 - inflicted some wounds on carnifexes
Gladiator 2 - killed some Marines (2-3 each...Tom spread his stuff out a lot...which actually helped me, because even though I've got lots of ordnance, I also had lots of point weaponry, and he was never able to concentrate his forces).
Gladiator 3 - killed off lots of Ksons
Gladiator 4 - wounded the carnifex.
TT1 - nothing - controller was Feared off the table
TT2 - killed a few conscripts when it blew up from shooting
TT3 - failed to wound against the DP (dang 1s)
TT4 - died to enemy shooting, but managed to lure a Khorne berserker squad away from the side of the board that we wanted (and coincidentally into the firing lanes of our Lemans Russ).

At 25 points a pop, they're simply the most cost-efficient FA buy out there. As long as FW is allowed, I can't see not taking them.

Yes. As long as you're playing on a table that has at least the 25% recommended terrain, the maneuver advantage gained by going all-mech as opposed to all-foot is simply huge. The night-fight game against the SAFH would probably have ended up similarly even without night fight, simply because we could maneuver with the terrain, and they couldn't. It might not have been as crushing a defeat, but I'm totally certain we still would have won. Especially when the mission has objectives as opposed to straight VPs, the ability to maneuver effectively is simply an advantage without peer.

I'll second that comment on Cyclops Demo Vehicles. Wonderful little things. Used 3 of 'em (plus two Special Weapon Squads) against a foot-slogging World Eater army once. A single Cyclops killed 12 Berzerkers in one blast.

This will come under the heading of "non-sequiteur" (sp?)

After reading the battle report, I have a question....

If the plural of codex is codices, and the plural if index is indices, would not the plural of carnifex be carnifices?

Just wondering

i have a question about your =I= and retinue. why the null rod and the psychic hood?
have you used 3 gunservitors instead? do the vets w/ plasma work as well, or better?
thanks.

The psychic hood was there to provide the psyker-shutdown for the entire army. I wanted something that could shut down Fear of the Dark.

The null rod was there because it was a Gladiator. The plasma gun warriors were there for the same reason. In a gladiator, you've got to expect anything. Superheavies. Titans. Armored company. And Siren Prince Daemonbombs.

With the null rod, the Inquisitor Lord and his squad were utterly immune to Siren. I theoryhammered it out, and the =][= plus retinue had enough fire to make it entirely possible that I would kill off a Siren Prince with a single volley of fire.

I've used the Kyoto-pattern =][= before. It works pretty well, although in fourth its far to easy to single him and the boys out for special attention.

so, in a potential worse case senario, 3 plas toting vets are better than 3 h.bolter, or 2 h.bolter, 1 plascannon toting servitors? i've never used either, but guessed the servitors would fare better.

thanks for the info.

They're different. A kyoto-pattern is designed to serve as another heavy weapons squad. My squad is designed to serve as a rapid-response unit, to fill certain holes in my list.

Congrats on your placing and thank you for such well produced battle reports.

i don't mean to turn this in to a tactics thread, but i have 1 more question!
you said the lists were created with "theoryhammer". so, over all how well
did you theorize? was there any major/minor things you'd change, in hindsight?

thanks for the responses. and for the awesome batreps.

As to how well theoryhammer worked, I think the "Best Team Tacticians" plaque on my "love-me" wall says enough.

I can't speak for Janthkin, Yakface, and Blackmoor, but there's not much I think we could have changed. Our lists were tweaked beyond belief to make everything balance out nicely, while keeping our armies relatively distinctive.

I am not much of an IG player, and right now what is left of my once proud IG army is getting parted off to my Demonhunters and my LatD lists. But my hat goes off to Janthkin, Yakface, and Centurian99. They really build these lists and they know IG inside and out. They had a lot of theory to hammer out among them so I was mostly along for the ride. Not only did they know how to build a very strong IG list, but they really knew what to do with them on the table top.

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

Here is a brief re-cap of Yakface?s and my Round 3 game. It is the one game that we lost:

There was really nothing we could do to win. It went so bad, so fast that early on we were in victory point denial mode. They won the roll for table sides so they choose the side with 2 huge buildings. They placed their defilers, their Demon Princes and their bikes behind the building so that we had no visibility to any targets.

They went first and one defiler took out my basilisk, and the other took out my chimera with my melta-gun squad inside of it. They were the only things in our army that could counter their defilers. Then after that turn Yakface told me that all they had to do was just stay behind cover and they would just win by out shooting us. We really had no options. The buildings that they were hiding behind were so large that we could not even flank them. We would have been in their deployment zone before we would be able to take a shot. We could not charge, or even get close to them because the bikes with melta guns, and the demon princes would just tear us to pieces. So we were really in a no win situation. In hindsight I could have held my sentinels back and deep struck them, but since they were playing Khorne DPs I thought that they would try to bum-rush up the middle and I wanted those lascanons to soften them up a little.

C99 I saw salamanders in your lists. I own a few, though admittedly I haven't fielded them since 4th. Are they a better choice over the command squad? I suppose the huge mobility would be a plus in a mech list and still have decent firepower. So would you prefer these over a basic JO squad in chimera with specials?

The use of the salamander command vehicle was purely a points based decision. It was a way to field a cheap HQ choice instead of a CHQ mounted in a Chimera. That's really the only reason I could see taking a Command Salamander.

Salamander Scout vehicles, on the other hand, are awesome IMO. The ability to have a guard vehicle move 24" on the last turn to capture objectives is priceless.

Points and variety, Yak. It was nice to not have every HQ unit be identical.

From my perspective, if it could be taken as alternative to an HQ squad normally, I'd consider it. For the points saved, especially in a mech list, its nice.

Unfortunately, you can't do it that way anywhere except the TT.

Cool. Thanks for the reassurance that salamander scouts still kick a$$, Yak. I have two, and I used to use them in 3rd. but I haven't tried them out in 4th. I may want to do that. Moving a 24" is an awesome tool for the guard to snag objectives.
