At what point is the green tide cheesy?
I am looking at taking the tide to a tournament at 1500 but I don't want to bring it if people think it's cheese. Because I don't think it is. I'm all for the fun of playing but also want to be competitive. The first tournament I have been to (which was about a month ago) I won best sportsmanship out of around 30 people. I play for the fun. So I wanted your opinion, at what point will you arrive at the gaming table with your army, only to see a tide and think *well this is gonna suck and I'm not gonna enjoy this at all*?
Since I don't think a pure green tide is cheese, what with it would you consider cheese? Void shield generator? Da lucky stick in the unit? A load of weird boys giving buffs? Is it cheese at 1000 pts? 1250? 1500? 1850? 2000? Etc.
Or do you think the green tide is just cheese on its own? If so, personally, I don't think you understand what it means to be an ork player.
Discuss
Also, I would make this a poll but it doesn't give me the option for some reason? Help?

I say take what you want, Orks in a lot of cases are already fighting an uphill battle. Also its a tournament, I know other players are going to be bringing some nasty stuff so I wouldn't worry about it.

I wouldn't call it cheese. It can be countered fairly easily by just about any other army if they were equipped with the right build for the job. I'd suspect in a tournament that wouldn't be the case though since players usually run smaller, specialised elitist lists and might be overwhelmed by numbers.
I actually have a hell of a lot of fun brawling the green tide with my Necrons, so I'd never complain if someone bought it to a tournament.

Cheese only counts in friendly matches. If you bring wave serpent spam in a friendly game it's cheese. You're also being a dick. Friendly games should be for fun.
In a tournament it's every man for themselves within the limits of the rules.
You're paying in to play right? Bring what you want as long as it's legal. It's a competition at this point.
But that alone though is not necessarily cheese. Bring a void shield generator and you're now frumunda

You're going to a tournament. Bring your best shot. Unless it has been specified "not to bring cheese" - which is quite a loose term in itself and surely everything considered too overpowered is banned to beginwith.
Greentide in whatever form hasn't even seen cheese compared to some of the other things out there.

Hell no friend, I am only running 140 ish models including the other components of my army. That would be a really lame move, so no.

I don't think the green tide is cheesy. It might hard counter some popular builds, but that's about it.
I say you go for it! Playing da tide is great fun. Last weekend I got to krump some space puppies with my boyz and it was great.

Not cheese, just can be a difficult game for some people. But most players will just have fun seeing how far they can whittle it down.

It's a tournament, bring your best.
If it was a friendly, ask your opponent.
If I was your opponent, I'd be excited to play against that! What's more cinematic and awesome than a tide of charging Orks?

Probably not very because of the power klaws, which could get to them all at once with multi charge, or because of the tank bustas, which is what they are for

Oh sorry if I gave the impression they would politely pull over by their side Not much room to fall back on if theres a green wall behind and on your sides That's a very nice everything you got there, it would be a shame if anything happened to it Sss.
The idea is entertaining nontheless

The only time a green tide is cheesy is at huge points levels.
In large games, the ork player has way too many models to make maneuvering or use of terrain a real thing, and you also sort of get trolled facing off against them due to their longer than usual turns. Of course, after turn 1, both of these become untrue, so they're really only cheesy on the first turn or two of large games.
Once the ork player takes casualties, or if you play at a much more sane points level where you have to worry about things like envelopment and the ork player gets to make more intelligent use of terrain, then a green tide is rather the opposite of cheesy.

Cheese? No, but in a tournament, I very much doubt you would get much past turn 3. The amount of time spent on your turn would be outrageous.

It's actually not that bad I found. Got to turn 4 in 2.5 hours in a casual not tournament game with a friend. I find that ( assuming it's ok with my opponent) I can move each model that matters (basically the boss, pain boy and the nobs) the exact distance required, then move several boyz from the front row forward the exact distance, and then just move the tide up from the back so that some models don't even have to move. Of course since I can Waaagh every turn I also move for their run distance in the move phase (again if my opponent is cool with it) to speed up time. And if all else fails, I can just ask them to help me move them there is less thinking to do as I have less units to move around, so it probably takes about a normal turn time TBH

Yeah, practiced Green Tide players don't usually have time issues beyond the initial deployment. Its those unpracticed with it that eat up time.

yeah I don't think it'll be cheesy but I think it'll also do really well. examining net lists you typically see branded as "competitive" you see a lotta focus on death stars etc. a preferance for plasma over flamers etc . I suspect more then a few players simply won't have the toolkit to deal with all the bodies you can put on field. Best case sceniero you take down a number of people unperpared for the green tide, and actually shake up the local meta a bit.
Worst case scenerio you'll run into a guy whose more then capable of handling you and get wrecked fast. but I bet it'll be fun

Sorry but anyone who thinks ANYTHING the Ork codex can make rises to the level of cheddar others can make is really off their rocker. Void shields arent an ork issue they are na every army issue an shouldnt even BE allowed in tournaments.
General issue: every single codex/Supplement has something that is awesome. This one has its Green tide. okay fine. Still die like flies, and are still fun to play AGAINST.
Specific Issue: its hella expensive and it SHOULD be fearsome. But because you kill the closest model, the real key here is to just shoot the piss out of it. It really has to make contact and if you add one round to the time it takes that ball of death to do it well... You're way better off.
I did a blog on the ork Bowling Ball if you're interested. I found it to be incredibly effective, but I could see how it would have some really hard counters against volume of fire type forces.

I don't think it's cheesy in the least. Everyone I've run it against so far has had a blast trying to kill it, win or lose. Cheese isn't fun to play against. Thus, Green Tide isn't cheesy.
It can be time consuming depending on who is commanding the tide. It's good for a potential Green Tider to practice moving models before taking it to a game. Or your opponent can assist if they wish, as my opponents have done before too, since it's just moving dudes up. I think a lot of players have fun moving a boatload of models too, as not many armies get such an opportunity. It's like...player bonding through Ork slaughter!
