I have only been in the hobbie almost a year and had 3 at one time but sold one. Sometimes wish I was a one army man but I love the two I have now And don't see myself parting with them.

How many do you own and keep up codexs for?

For me, I would say three armies, and that is too many considering I've only been playing for a little over a year (collecting for a bit longer). The specific armies are listed in my sig (I don't count Assassinorum as an army), and I do actually own the CSM codex in addition to those.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

I own 6 armies, ranging from 5K pts down to 1850pts.

I'm in the process of packaging three of them for sale.

As for codices, I didn't buy any of the most recent ones for 7th ed. I have access to them and occasionally use them for games, but I must admit it happens less frequently - I'm waiting for 8th edition. The number of codices I own from 6th edition is 6 but with the exception of Chaos, they're all out of date

Ten. Seven of which are playable at 1250 and higher and the others are either meant for allies or are in the 'just started' stage. My Dark Eldar and Inquisition (and Assassins) are just add ons to existing armies. My Orks have really floundered since I started Necrons, and now they're even back behind my 30k Ultramarines in the queue. I get very ADHD when it comes to armies, and sometimes my tactics suffer for it, but I like having a bunch of choices depending on what army I feel like bringing.

Back when I really played like ten years ago I had something like 3-5 but that's because my CSM could double as space marines and such.

Right now I only have my Tau and those are a work in progress , though I have no real intention to start another after. Maybe if they (GW) take the game aspect more seriously I'll pick up more armies.

I'll pluck you like a flower.

I play one. However, I did buy a Space Marine army, but discovered I really am not enjoying painting power armor, so may sell it off.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

I currently have three fully based and painted armies with which I play with. They are AM: Steel Legion (3000pts), CSM (2000pts), Dark Eldar (1500pts).

As well, I have about 1500pts of both Dark Angels and Orks which I am working on in no particular order or hurry.

I have between 2000-2500 and the codex for both Tau and Dark Angels.

I've also got about 1500 pts of 30K Blood Angels based on the BaC boxset that I'm the process of putting together.

For the greater good...

Currently I have two armies but I plan on getting a third of Horus Heresy once the Space Wolves come out. I have what I think a good formula to ensuring that I play with all my armies and never have one collecting dust. Depending on my opponent if I'm playing an Imperial player I will field my Farsight Enclaves and if I'm playing a Xenos I tend to field my Imperial Guard. I really dislike games with identical factions duking it out (aka Imperial vs Imperial) except formthe Horus Heresy so I having that flexibility has been awesome.

Also play styles are part of it as well, different types of armies in that regard to change things up. My Tau for example, lots of Heavy Infantry and Monstrous Creatures, my Imperial Guard both an Air Assault (technically Mech Infantry) and Heavy Armor list. Space Wolves I'm planning on a Close Combat oriented army. This allows me even more flexibility to bring a particular army if I so choose to based on the style it plays.

Kind of 3, technically 4 but more like 3.5? I have Tyranids, Chaos Space Marines, Khorne Daemonkin, and Chaos Daemons. I don't have the Daemons codex, but I could run a full army of daemons with the models I use for Daemonkin (not a very good one, but one nonetheless).

One, but zero actually, since I play Warmachine instead. Given new models, and acceptable rules, I might play 40k again.

I buy all the codicies because I like to read them.

I have Black Templar, Crimson Fists, HH Imperial Fists, ChAos Space Marines, and Orks.

I have Daemons, Black Templar, Cult Mechanicus, Skitarii, and Imperial Knights though I will probably never field an Ad Mech army that doesn't combine some elements of all 3, so 3-5 armies.

I have bits of armies, but at the minute it's three. BA, Orks, Tyranids. Hanging up my DE and allies and I'm just annoyed about Stormtalons/Centurions not being in BA, but I'm still going to paint them in those colours because forge the narrative that's why.

In terms of models or use? Because I have like 20 sister of battle models I use in immulators but I use them as henchmen in chimaras in inquisition. But besides that I have chaos space marines, chaos daemons, just started building a impguard/Renegades and Heretics army (penal legion), black Templar, and inquisition/assassins...so like 4 1/2?

I'm building a massive Alpha Legion army that can be used as 30k Alpha Legion, 30k Imperial Cult, Chaos Space Marines, and Lost and the Damned. I guess I could even use C:SM and C:IG. Counted it as one though

1st army (really 6): Chaos Space Marines: Enough for a 2500 pt force for each God. Was mainly black legion. Even have the original 25mm base obliterators. My daemons got split out due to the newer codex's so they could all count as 6 armies combined.
2nd army (Really 2): Was Daemon Hunters: I wanted another fanatical group to thump on the chaos armies. It then split off to become Inquisition and Grey Knights.
3rd army: Black Templar - I figured back with Daemon Hunters we could have allies to attach to and space marines were an option, the BT seemed suitably fanatical. This is now my most painted / complete army. I am looking at some 3500 point or more of these black and white guys. I started off using the small "Armageddon" codex which gave the BT their own flavor.
4th army: Imperial Guard / Astra Militarum : They were the other allies for Daemon Hunters way back when. This is now a full army recently painted and is some 4000+ points worth not including the Baneblade and Shadowsword.
5th army: Imperial Knights: not complete in itself, only got two of these guys: the first one released and the new kit with all the add-ons. Partially assembled and still figuring out how I want to apply the magnets for the options.
6th army: Skitarii: I like these guys, tech gypsies I swear. Not a complete in itself force but give many options for scenarios. I have been looking forward to these guys since the Dan Abnett Eisenhorn books.

Honorable mention:
Put together a full Tau force when they were first released long ago, assembled with magnets fully, primed and then sold the whole thing to good profit.
Put together a full Eldar force and this was before the "new" waveserpent kit so I modified some Falcons to close the side wings to a gem in the front to act as a focus for the field they are known for. Gave the whole thing to a cousin who was desperate to play... he still uses that force to this day with many updates.

it depends on what you mean by 'army'. I currently have 2, assassins (if having only a (literal) handful of models counts) and tau. I have some Space Marines, but I'm looking to get rid of them, and was current until the newest codex was released, but over the years the only armies that I haven't actually played were orks, sisters, Deldar, (and the new stuff - knights, mechanicum, 30k, etc).

I have three armies from different factions that I actually play (SM, IK & AdMech), another two that I could put on the table for small games around 1000 points (DA & Eldar), another two still-in-box armies (Orks & AM) that I hope to some day get to and some random small still-in-box forces for a few of the other factions - mainly from buying boxed sets (BA, Tyranids, SW, CSM).

Orks are my main army and take up the majority time, effort, and resources. Absolutely favorite army to play despite their limited effectiveness but by far the most fun.

Tau is my secondary army which as of late has been taking a breather. Playing Tau tends to draw a ton of flak from some very butt hurt players despite that I play Fire Warrior, Crisis, Hammerhead, Pathfinder heavy lists (Old school fluff lists). I love their fluff and their combined arms and synergy focused gameplay is great.

My Inquisition army is my 3rd but it consists of Inquisition, Grey Knights, and now adding Space Marines to the roster. My least painted army and still a big work in progress but its shaping up to be a fun army to play. In time my Space Marine (Void Krakens) section of my force might grow to become an entire force of its own and become my 4th army.

Own : 15+ / Play 0+

In case of Armies , not armies, there are boxes filled with:

- Black Templars ( real Templars ), Blood Angels ( DoA ), Dark Angels ( 3 wings, Death/Raven/Green ) , Iron Hands ( dread heavy ) , Raven Guard ( DS/JP/INF ) , Salamanders ( foot/flamers/termies ) , "White Scars" based successor ( bike heavy / pre 7th! ) , Grey Knights
( began as old Termie strike squad..) , a 4th ed trait based "young chapter" ( codex ), a decent sized DIY chapter ( codex ) of 3rd ed, Sisters of Battle, IG Cadians ( old metal ) acting as mob inf, "some Tanks" ( 2-3 companies + SHV ) from the Apoc era, IG Catachans
( recon/jungle ) , IG cadians ( was a =I= detach ) , Necrons.

I use ImperialKnights as add on and not an army of its own, have currently 4 and 1-2 unbuilt ones too.
The Ad mech / skittarrii stuff is still unassembled. So not an Army yet.
Got a few Space Wolves , but never a good feeling what i would want them to be, so not an Army.
Plus some "add ons" from a different time, like a Deathwatch Team, LoD, =I= + retinue.

Basically I have 2 Armies. IoM and Necrons.
