Three that I can make a respectable army from (four if you split up my Space Marines).

I have somewhat less than 500pts in about every other faction, mostly as detritus from trades and craigslist purchases. I keep them around for when I want to paint something different.

I've been in this hobby for 20 years and own/have owned every single faction.

Recently I sold off my Iyanden Eldar, GK, and Tau, and started up vanilla Salamanders (which is strangely my first foray into the vanilla marine world). I've also considered selling off my orcs since they take up so much space.

I still maintain every other faction, including the newer AdMech, the Inquisition, and SoB.

Edit:

I play sparingly and mostly enjoy the game for the hobby. Maybe a local tournament 1-2 times a year and get a game in on average once a month. Once WHFB died out I started playing the game way less.

I have four that I keep up codexes for, several that I only own a couple units for barebones ally detachments or summoning or whatever, and one on the shelf I no longer have interest in but won't sell for nostalgia reasons (baby's first power armor army).

I rarely have more than 2k of any given army though, I usually don't see the need to expand past the list I like. The exception is orks.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I happen to like GW products... maybe not the prices or the gameplay, but the plastic models as of late have been superb. As such, I have 4 armies.

H.B.M.C.- The end hath come! From now on armies will only consist of Astorath, Land Speeder Storms and Soul Grinders!

I only really play and invest in my CSM, but I also have a tyranid force that was given to me that my girlfriend decided she liked and commandeered. I also have an old school Ultramarine force which I'm converting to Iron Hands for a friend. (Same guy who gave me the tyranids). That being said, he's pretty much decided that he has no interest to really play anymore and it'll probably end up being mine anyway. I also have like 800 pts of necrons in a box somewhere that i got for practically nothing, but I plan on giving those to someone else interested in 40K that likes the army. but lacks the capital investment to play. Since I seem to have armies just falling into my lap and shelf space is starting lack, I figure I can be the one to give away some armies for once.

So, I play one, but technically I possess 3 and a half.

"Because we couldn't be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We've all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we've all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher's Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.

The Wolves will always come to the heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn't behave that way. Only a dog does.

That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

I've been collecting since Rogue Trader, but only really got back into playing in 6th.

I have 2000+ points tyranids, tau, necrons, eldar, imperial guard, marines and orcs. Plus my son has 2000 points of chaos marines + assorted daemons, and about 1200 points of Necrons. Only the orcs and Eldar have been relatively unplayed - they are "guest" armies for friends to use.

At one time, I had a friends (unpainted) Squat army (about 100-150 figures, most on bikes), but that got thrown out some years ago.

It never ends well

Just orks for the moment, and likely they'll be my only army for a while, and my main army forever, but I'm getting a feel for the other armies and what they can do as I get more experienced. Frontrunners are Spess Mehreens, Chaos/Daemons, Dark Eldar, and Mechanicus, in that order. Course, I still want to get my army up to a respectable size, first.

3000 points of Imperial guard. This is my main army that I normally use, that includes my imperial knight.

2000 points of iron hands space marines

1250-1500 points of slaanesh chaos space marines

750 points of dark eldar

A bunch of random inquisition stuff used for allies with imperial armies

They say that 20% of the customers is 80% of the business. That's why players like myself don't matter to GW. It makes sense, but still really sucks. I'd probably be better off if they just squatted the BA.

I have 5 armies. I keep thinking that I should consolidate to one army so that I could assume a more completionist attitude and get at least one of each codex entry...but my lack of focus prevents this from happening. Plus I can't bring myself to get rid of things that I've painted.

One of my greatest triumphs this year was uniting a few of the codexes with a theme.

My main army is my Imperial Guard. I have around 3.5 k in models.
I have 2 (4) squads of Skitarii and some walkers for them. Maybe around 500 pts.

I got the Skitarii to be allies to my guard.

I own models for 11 armies, with sizes varying from a few squads to hundreds of infantry and a dozen tanks or so.

But I really only play two armies - Sisters of Battle with Space Marine allies. My mom plays against me with my Ork models.

I tend to keep my SoB, SM, Ork, Eldar and IG codices up to date. Eldar and IG I like to occasionally toy with including in my armies, since I like elves (though I don't care for the Eldar's arrogant sense of superiority) and I like the IG's aesthetic.
