Trying to get into necrons. Love the fluff. Always liked the look and simplicity. Now I'm trying to build a list. I don't want to use the harvest. I don't really like it. So I've come up with this instead....
+++ Reclamation Legion (1716pts) +++
++ Necrons: Codex (2015) (Nec Decurion Detachment) (1716pts) ++
+ Core (1041pts) +
Reclamation Legion (1041pts)
Rules: Enhanced Reanimation Protocols, Move Through Cover, Relentless
····Immortals (85pts)
········5x Immortal (85pts) 5x Tesla
····Overlord (160pts) Phase Shifter, Resurrection Orb, Voidreaper
····Tomb Blades (66pts)
········Tomb Blade,Nebuloscope, Shield Vanes, Twin-linked Gauss Blaster
········Tomb Blade,Nebuloscope, Shield Vanes, Twin-linked Gauss Blaster
········Tomb Blade,Nebuloscope, Shield Vanes, Twin-linked Gauss Blaster
····Warriors (235pts)
········Ghost Ark (105pts)
········10x Necron Warrior (130pts)
····Warriors (235pts)
········Ghost Ark (105pts)
········10x Necron Warrior (130pts)
····Warriors (260pts)
········20x Necron Warrior
+ Auxiliary (675pts) +
Judicator Battalion (675pts)
Rules: Move Through Cover, Target Designated
····Triarch Praetorians (270pts)
········Night Scythe (130pts)
········5x Triarch Praetorian (140pts) 5x Rod of Covenant
····Triarch Praetorians (270pts)
········Night Scythe (130pts)
········5x Triarch Praetorian (140pts) 5x Rod of Covenant
····Triarch Stalkers (135pts)
········Triarch Stalker, Twin-Linked Heavy Gauss Cannon
The basic idea is to stick the Lord in the blob of 20 and keep the arks on the flanks. They can repair and 20 gauss blasters should cause most things problems. I like the battalion. They're not necessarily going to start in the night scythes but it gives me some flier support. What do people think? I'm pretty new to necrons?

It's a good setup, and you'll do fine. A few things that might help.
* Zahndrekh instead of that Overlord will go a lot further. You can flip the WL trait as the situation calls for it, and will help you learn Necrons a little easier. Especially if you have anything in Reserve, like the Nightscythes.
* Nightscythes in the Judicator. If you haven't purchased anything yet, save these for last. While they are good in a Judicator, not everyone will allow you to have the Praetorians start in the Nightscythe. Rules debate aside, there is tactically very little reason to do so. I'll be trying it out when I get my Praetorians together because I've got a group of guys who have agreed to let me start them inside. Just from discussions though, it seems that doing it only hurts the Necron player.
* Tesla Immortals are a great choice with this setup. Finding points to get more models in that unit and/or more Tomb Blades is a good idea to consider down the road. Even dropping one of the Nightscythes would be worth it. If you find you're a little too light on the assault side as well, then having more Praetorians is a good idea.
* Mono Stalkers in the Judicator will bite you in some games. While the HGC is still great, you won't be able to take advantage of the Formation bonus if he dies. So you could also put him in reserve on a game by game basis, but them you're not providing that BS bonus to the units on the board.

Thank you for the reply. I appreciate it a lot.
A question about the night scythes, do they not benefit from the special rule where by the stalker selects a unit in line of sight? I assumed they did? Also, very briefly, what's the argument for them not being able to start inside? It's a dedicated transport? To be perfectly honest they're only in their as AA which is something I think the list lacks. Is there a better way of doing it? I don't mind dropping them for more tomb blades and immortals. I was even considering a C'Tan as I think they're really cool.

They do benefit from the Formation bonus, which is a good reason to take them. If your opponent does run flyers and is concerned about it, I think you'll find keeping that mono stalker alive more of an issue.
Most people never mention whether or not they intend on starting the Praetorians in them or not, so I've picked up the habit of pointing it out. If you're not planning on having them in the NS, then no one will have a problem and you'll be fine.
While I understand the desire to have some AA, Necrons have such a strong ground presence that it's often as much as 'How are the Flyers going to deal with the Ground units' instead of how Necrons deal with Flyers. I'm not saying that flyers can't be difficult or problematic, just that I've found they aren't a priority unless there is nothing else to shoot. Is it a better way? Not necessarily better, but it is an effective one.
You've got such a Warrior Centric list, that I think you'll be fine. If your group plays with Mysterious Objectives, then the possibility of a Skyfire Nexus is good in your army. Even then, some players won't Jink, thinking that 6s to hit and Glance means they're safe. Then the HPs peel off here n there, and they have to rethink Jink.
As for the debate, it's shortened down to one of two solutions.
1) Praetorians are Jump Infantry. Unless permission is given to allow them inside, like Stormravens IIRC, you still can't start the unit in the NS because it's missing this in their rules. Most players and Events will probably rule this way, and all Necron players should be aware of it. Some even go so far as to say that it's a Copy n Paste error.
2) Its a Dedicated Transport, so has all the permission it needs. It's the 'Why would it be an option if they couldn't use it' mentality/approach. Outside of a Judicator, having the option makes zero sense, since nothing else could start in it. Even less sense, since there are other ways to get empty Nightscythes into a list. Relaxed players will allow it and you'll have a good time.
Get a CTan later. Yes they are cool, but even I agree with other players, that they're unreliable, and easy to deal with. Great for fun games.

I love the judicator battalion. I use it to great effect in my games, and I have it built the very same way you do, minus the Night Scythes. My gaming group has deemed that the Scythes will gain the benefit from the formation, so that is a great reason to have them. But I personally see absolutely no debate at all, Praetorians cannot ride the Scythe because the rule allowing them to do so just isn't there.
As for keeping the Arks on the flanks, you would be better served having at least one close to your 20 block as to resurrect fallen warriors. it may be worth while to have the warriors hold the center instead and push your enemy to the edges, or bring them into charge range of your Praetorians.
As for a C'tan, I would suggest only getting one if you plan to use it in the Conclave of the Burning One formation. That really adds survivability to the C'tan and makes it more viable. Given that it is a formation, your army will still be battle-forged.
Consider a command barge, that thing will increase the size of your re-roll 1's bubble. But since your rec legion is fairly sparse, it may not make sense at this points level.

Ok. I appreciate all the feedback. It's really interesting to hear what other necron players think. It's also quite nice to know that the way I was thinking is actually pretty close.
I'm thinking about perhaps dropping the night scythes. I can add another stalker and perhaps more immortals or something. I think I'd like to push this list to 2K eventually. Is the harvest really that special? Wraiths seem majorly under costed. But are they that good?
When I said about keeping the arks on the flank, I meant the flanks of the warrior blob. Not the flanks of the board. The basic idea is to have a strong centre board presence but I'm not sure how effective this will be.
Is tesla really any good on backfield immortals. The gauss weapon has the same range at 1 shot. Granted it doesn't gain the extra on 6's but it does have gauss. Really struggling here.

From a theorycrafting perspective, Gauss weapons are king in rapid fire range due to the auto-wound. Outside that range, the two extra hits from tesla weapons is better outside that range, so the question is whether you plan on keeping your Immortals at a distance, or moving them to within 12" of the enemy.

Ok, so I've had a touch of a reshuffle to ditch the fliers. Though I'm not sold on it as it has a monolith and I've heard they're not that competitive.
Necron Decurion detachment 1750
Core - Reclmation Legion
Overlord - Voidreaper, Res Orb, Phylactery, phase shifter
Immortals - 5x Tesla
Immortals - 5x Tesla
Warriors - 10x Warriors, Ghost Ark
Warriors - 10x Warriors, Ghost Ark
Warriors - 20x Warrios (overlord goes here in reserve)
Tomb blades - 3x Tomb blades, 3x shield veins
Monolith
Auxiliary - Judicator Batallion
Triarch Stalker - Heavy gauss cannon
Triarch Preatorians - 5x Rods of Covenants
Triarch Preatorians - 5x Rods of Covenants
The idea is to put the Lord and 20 warriors in reserve and then jump them out of the monolith then one. The other option is to put them on the field to draw enemy deployment with the monolith out somewhere else and then pull them through to nullify enemy shooting. Not sure if this tactic works?!
Thoughts?

The problem with Monoliths is poor damage output and they're expensive and slow. So while the idea of hopping 20 Warriors across the board seems like a cool idea... you could do the same thing for cheaper using an Overlord upgrade. And besides... why would you want to deny your opponent the opportunity to waste shots on a 20man warrior blob in a Decurion?
Almost anything is a better option. More Tomb Blades, a Night Scythe in the Judicator and more Praetorians, another Stalker and more Tom Blades/Praetorians or Immortals. All of these things add more value than a Monolith that will be Melta/Grav/D fodder on turn one or completely ignored until it's convenient for your opponent to destroy.

I did toy with a second stalker. I'm not sure the gauss cannon is the best weapon. Perhaps two heat Ray's is better. Automatically Appended Next Post: Two heat Ray's and I could probably get some gauss immortals.

Use the Monolith for the Immortals. Have them deal with any tac squads with metlas. Keep the 20 blob sandwiched between the Ghost Arks for 2x Repair Barge. The beauty of the Monolith is you can take any infantry in the game, in reserve, on Pluto, at your mom's house, etc (as long as they aren't locked in combat. Also, if you can't tell I'm be facetious, delete your interwebs.) and put them out the gate. You don't need to assign one unit in reserves to be "in the Monolith". I use this strategy all the time when people try to roll up on it with meltas. No one likes it when 20 Warriors who were 4 feet away suddenly appear in front of them.

That's beautiful if your opponent is 'rolling' up to you with meltas. My problem is usually they're 'Drop Podding' with meltas and leave no chance for you to even use the portal.

Which is another reason why you shouldn't put the warriors in reserve. Because then they're gone. The few times I've encountered this they were not able to kill my Monolith in 1 shooting phase as most drop pod squads only have 1-2 meltas.
Personally I have never had someone Termicide my Monolith with 5 combi-meltas. They go for my GA's since they're a much bigger threat as I play them very aggressively.
If you want to play with a Monolith, play with one. You can throw out a worst-case scenario for just about any Necron unit. Yes, playing against Space Marines with drop pods with tac squads with meltas would probably wreck your Monolith's day. However, that's the only scenario that a drop pod squad would wreck your Monolith's day without you getting a turn.

To be fair, I do see deep striking melta. And I also see a lot of fusion loaded tau. So maybe the monolith isn't worth the points.
Back to the stalker discussion. I cannot decide between the two load outs...

It does lack long range, but the idea is to march forward and get into rapid fire range as fast as is possible and absolutely hammer them with gauss and tesla.

Ok, I have dropped the monolith and dropped the stalkers gun down to a heat Ray, I've then added a second stalker and a third unit of immortals but this time with gauss. I do feel I'd struggle against aircraft. I suppose play testing will tell me.

I wouldn't worry about aircraft. Play testing should tell you that you can weather whatever beating aircraft can put out while capturing objectives that aircraft can't capture.

I hope so. With 73 odd models it'll be the largest footprint of an army I've ever personally played. So it'll have to get used to trying to dominate the board and own the ground game. It's not something I'm used to. Thanks for all your replies dude. You've been a real help.
To an aside. The Judicator Batallion - I'm assuming the stalkers form a unit and therefor have to fire at the same thing? I also assume that means that the formation can only pick one target a turn for special rules?

Yes to both questions.
Also keep in mind that the Heat Ray has a Flamer option, and since they are walkers this means they can use it in Overwatch when charged. It doesn't come up often, but when it does it always surprises my opponent.

Triple Ghost Ark Decurion builds are pretty effective.
Keep the Stalker with at least one of them to give it cover saves, at least.
If you go this route, stick to the single Stalker.
Can vouch for Night Scythes from the J.Battalion being worth it. Rerolls to-hit and rerolls to-wound/pen are amazing on Tesla Destructors, even if they are AP-.
A second unit of Tomb Blades would also be good.
If you add more Immortals, one larger unit might be better than two smaller ones. If you go for triple GAs, the Immortal squad is probably where your Overlord is going to attach. You'll want them staying alive.

I'm now thinking of adding lychguard with war scythes. Mostly because I love them.

I'll be honest the idea of a 3+ armor and a 4+reanimate is a nice idea, then you walk in with str 7 ap2 hits, its a good time here's the problem, ap3. Then your elite warriors are reduced to just their reanimate. There are two viable solutions to this, put a Chrono Cryptek in there to help with str 10/D hits to drop reanimate, or give them swords and shields. The power sword equilivant is the favorite because then you get a unit of str 5, ap3 'Crons with a 3+/3++ with a 4+ reanimate, and watch them mow through anything not in 2+ armor. For that I usually throw a destroyer lord in, and upgrade him with a warscythe to deal with those in 2+armor. It's a scary formation when you think about the models only being 25pts per model. Also the D.lord conveys preferred enemy to the unit, so hitting on 3 or 4 rerolling 1's, then wounding on 3's rerolling 1's.....yep its as bad as it sounds...some high level cheese....fun.

If you add Lychguard, give them Hyperphase Swords and Dispersion Shields. They are so worth it. Just be careful becuse they are very easy to tarpit.(With sycthes or swords).

The reason most Necron players don't like Lychguard is because they're too slow. If you take them you better give them some sort of delivery system (either NS or Veil).

The veil was way I was thinking. Add in an overlord with a war scythe and veil and suddenly you have somewhere close to 20 Str 7 AP 2 armourbane attacks on the charge.

Be aware, if a unit of Warscythe Lychguard touch down anywhere on the table, they're gonna get immediately shot to hell before they can charge. Someone carrying a Solar Staff may be required to keep them safe for that important drop turn.
