I was wondering what's the communities opinion on what the space wolves are like to you. I personally have a old grudge towards them
Thanks

they are pretty neat in 40k. they are cool guys who kill aliens and doesn't afraid of anything. (the community bitches about their plot armor, but from whay I've seen Eldar and UM have much more of it than the wolves)
damn them all in 30k though. Maybe if the furries would fact check, there would be more of them, and their idiot primarch would still have his pet dogs.

From a fluff and current implementation perspective, I think they're ridiculous. From what is theoretically a cool theme of having viking-esque marines, we have werewolves who do nothing but wolf things with wolf objects. The whole shtick about not using psykers but having not-psykers who harness the planet's energy or somesuch is almost as ridiculous as Murderfang, who quite possibly has the worst fluff of all time. At least Inspecter Obiwan Sherlock Clousseau was funny. This guy, Murderfang, just doesn't even make sense. There's more I'm missing, but the fluff is just not good.
The rules have always seemed off to me, but I'm a firm believer all loyalist marines can happily be represented by a single book.
Just a weird faction all around that I typically avoid thinking about.

They're Space Vikings, with Travil Fimmel in line to be the next Chapter Master!
In all seriousness, though: I think they're cool and unique with a lot of flavour, though their name really is a products of the times they were conceived in. To me, the name 'Space Wolves' (as opposed to 'Wolves of Fenris' which, in the fluff, is what they like to be called) kinda sounds like the same sort of thing as when manufacturers used to stick 'Turbo 9000' or something like that on the end of the name for a kettle just to make it sound cool.

Could you direct me to some of that plot armoured Eldar fluff please, all I've read through lately has been Eldar either getting murdered or winning at the cost of everyone dying horribly so I could use a 'pick me up' round about now

I love the space viking theme, the pelts, wolf decorative bits, etc. Riding around on giant wolves is even sorta cool as well as having wolves that fight for them. The whole unimaginative naming system where everything is "wolfy wolf claw, tooth, fang, howl, etc" is meh while there is gak that Murderfang with his Murderclaws and having Murderlust is just . One of my favorite styles of combat from a Space Marine faction and Bloodclaws/Skyclaws are probably my favorite MEQ with Grey Hunters being close behind (Space Marines who aren't chumps in close combat is nice).

It's 50/50. I love some of their models and look and lore, but recently they've transcended from cool viking motifs to near-furry levels of silliness.
I would play them if they toned it down a bit.

A potentially cool concept taken to such absurdities that the Space Wolves now come off as some sort of bad 12 year old's internet fanfic. The faction tries too hard to be multiple contradictory things and it all comes off as both silly and pretentious.
The fact that, as an army, theyve basically become Codex: Thunderwolf Deathstars hasnt helped. TWC were a stupid idea both from a gameplay and fluff perspective, and the army now largely revolves entirely around them.

They are awesome! The only loyalist army I have ever even considered playing. Both for their rules and fluff.
However having said that I freely admit that I ignore all fluff that I find stupid and rethink it to fit into my head cannon.

When I played CSM in 3rd i considered them a respected and fearsome enemy. Loyalists that were able to more than punch you back (and without the "lol +1 Initiative" of the BA). Cool Viking theme with some wolf. Progression from young reckless to pack member to wise long fang with the scouts completely different from the other loyalists.
Now they are fluffwise a parody of themselves. Not only fluffwise, since I loathe the thunderwoffs and many people use just those (or something). Grimnar has lost all his dignity.
In the story, I hate their hypocrisy+special snowflake status. Just compare Death Company vs Wulfen.
The way these parallel defects are treated, and how differently, is a symbol of why the fluff of the Space Furries is so insufferable. Blood Angels are tragic. SW are like "this is our genetic problem THAT MAKES US EVEN MORE AWESOME BECAUSE WE ARE THE HEROES WHAT GRIMDARK? I CANNOT HEAR YOU!".
(Truth to be told, BA in 3rd had to deal with the unpredictability of the death company formation at the beginning of the game, and bring units like the devastators or overcharge the engines of vehicles was a gamble. Other respect for my old enemies for that. But was too difficult to play in the opinion of the Talented Mr. Ward, I guess).

I jumped on their grizzled wolfiness way back in 2nd ed. Ragnar, Ulrik and Najal sold me. and the progression from Blood Claw, to Grey Hunter to Long Fang sealed the deal.
(the old school eavy metal paint job did for me too!)
Having moved on from GW and 40k for a few years and looking in from afar the grown up in me is appalled by the current naming conventions, Thunder wolves, and poor fluff.
Thematically GW have gone to town, and in a bad way.
The dumb kid in me loves murderfang, with murder claws with muderdom and wolves or woflishness wolfing wolves.

And this pretty much sums up why I've left GW behind. I started in 3rd edition in my 20s. The Grimdark was perfect. The flagrant OTT of some of the fluff of the heros was indeed OTT, but it wasn't silly. It was like reading Rambo, or watching a Chuck Norris flick. They wrote their games and fluff to appeal to that age group. However, over the last 20 years they have dropped the focus of their writing from the 20 something to the 12 yr old kid. They have actively removed a lot of the Grimdark and gone to Hero hammer. Where one guy/faction constantly does the impossible, but makes it look easy. At least Rambo had to burn a hole in his side shut with gun power. However, these new stories just keep layering one outrageous thing over another, with little consequences, but we will still give him a tragic end to this story to try and keep with the Grimdark of yesteryear. And if that doesn't do enough, we will add more skulls.
As proof from my own perspective, the fluff as written of Murderfang is a joke. I do like his rules though. However, my 11 year old son loves his fluff and thinks he is the toughest dread ever written. Bjorn is crying in the corner somewhere, I'm sure. Almost every piece of current fluff I've read plays out exactly how I overhear my son talking in the game. This lone hero guy takes on this and this and this, and even when I throw a "what if" stumper in his direction, suddenly a new peice of equipement is gifted to the character to deal with my curve ball. Its is almost word for word the way GW is presenting their game. And its just sad.

Yes, because a maybe mythical maybe not super soldier who swoops into the battlefield in its greatest time of need, constantly pulling off some stupidly fantastic show of strength, skill, power, etc that turns the table then dissapears into the fog of war is such sound writing. And to be fair I find most of the newcrons fluff painful to read. Unlimited destructive technology and we don't use it because... Umm... Yeah we just don't feel like it.

I used to think they were cool sorta (as far as any Imperial faction can be) but they fell out of favor with me. Kinda just drifted away as I found out more about the Blood Ravens and Imperial Fists.
From a rules perspective they are quite potent.
