It just came to mind after I was talking to a friendly chap in a game store that sold warhammer. He said not many people came by and bought sets.

they are an astounding value, compared to buying everything at MSRP. Then also, anyone getting the box sets generally won't blink at getting them online for an additional discount (which may be why the LGS shop owner isn't selling any).
Let me give you a for instance; I recently bought the IK Renegade box game. I bought it on eBay for $156 total(with shipping & tax included in that price) which was a respectable discount from the MSRP of $195+tax. Included in that box were both the old & new knights as well as a small terrain set. Even if I'm not ever intending to play the game that it came with, I saved (140+157+33-156=) $174 on that particular box. If I didn't need more assassins, I might buy the Assassins box too, as the current prices of the assassins is $30 each and the box (with more stuff) is 120.

Yup, I have Calth, and I will more than likely get Overwatch at some point, Warhammer Quest too.
Like others have said, if I can find them cheaper online I will buy them there. If the price difference isn't huge, I will support my local store by buying it there.

I bought the knight game from frontline when it came out. With the built in savings and 25% off, it was a pretty sweet deal.
No plans to play the game itself, just wanted the Knights.

Yes. I bought a few copies of space hulk (preorder went up on my last day as a mos). Bought the assassin game as I wanted an assassin army. 2.5 BaC for my crimson fist army. I split deathwatch with mellamoluigi as I wanted the cult. I'll pass on quest though, might get renegade just to double my knights into an army.

Well, I can say that personally, I don't terribly mind paying for table time. at least it means that I get a game occasionally.

I buy sets if there is value in them for me.
I picked up BaC. There were a number of things I wanted in there, and nothing that was pure chaff.
I didn’t pick up Deathwatch or the Assassin game. There were a handful of things I really wanted in there, but a lot of things I didn’t. Value didn’t add up, so I passed.
Space Hulk and DV didn’t have armies I played, so pass.
For the larger bundle boxes (like the get started boxes and the strike forces) that comes down to an individual selection. I price out the parts I want from them ala carte, and then figure out how much I’m actually saving.

No I do not, but that's because I only play tau, and I've 14 suits and 100 fire warriors
I really would get more if they sold a box set that was something like... Idk.. 5 pirhana for 80 dollars or something, or 3 broadsides for less than 150, but right now I don't need anything that comes in a set.
That being said I'd buy boxes if I played imperium of man. I'm just waiting for the "start collecting! Grey Knights" to happen

No one is going to buy execution force or whatever it is because you pay 150 dollars for like 8 miniatures. Many people will buy BaC because for 30 more dollars you get 30 more minis. The problem with the games is that more often than not they are way too overpriced for that they give to the player, so 40k people won't buy it because of the disinterest in the game (plus usual lack of models, so they make you pay for the game rather than the minis) and board game people won't buy it because of price compared to other products.
However, now box sets seem to be cheap model bundle deals now instead of actual games. (BaC, Renegade) Obviously this isn't a complaint, and is a good direction to head in. (silver tower still seems to be suffering from the low model count high price count tho, which is a shame because those bull men are beautiful)

I'm working towards building a space marine army, so the betrayal at calth box set was an excellent choice. Not only did I get the 30 marines with a few special weapons, it also extended the life of my devastator box set (just borrowed the chest and legs). I'm also using the terminator captain to give my grav devastators slow and purposeful. But I'm actually playing the game with my wife and it's quite fun.

I bought Space Hulk for the models, but enjoyed the game.
I bought Imperial Knights: Renegade for the models, but also enjoyed the game.
If I get Betrayal at Calth, I won't even play the game because the models would all be one army.

I picked up the Calth box, really wanted the dreadnought. Tried playing the game, but it has the usual GW problems of little thought going into any form of balance.
I've painted up the marines that came with the set as a sort of sternguard/veterans for my marine army, as well as inducting the terminator and dreadnought to the cause.
I'd like to play more of the scenarios (my son can use his chaos army to proxy for the chaps side), but my son who I play with was very turned off after a humilating defeat in the first scenario.

I think the boxed games are a hugely smart way of allowing GW to dip its toe into the nostalgia pool...or to create a range which they're not required to maintain/upkeep in future editions with codices, etc.
It's very likely that Genestealer cult would have not made it into normal 40K as its own faction/book etc. However, by releasing the excellent value Overkill box which allows players to do so, it's a win-win for GW. Particularly for enthusiasts who may buy two boxes or more.
BaC sold a ton because 30K is very hot right now - but if GW wanted to launch a fully complete Horus Heresy line it would require LOADS of product codes. Here they can produce the base units (which will later be released as box units so I hear) in a self-contained set. If it flops they aren't stuck with a huge range of miniatures.
