so it seems like rough riders are a lot more interesting this edition and i was wondering what everyone was using.
so... what are you guys using as your rough riders?

I'm waiting for Vic Minis to make their version with compatible legs. She previewed a basic model recently, so they're somewhere in the pipeline. In the meanwhile, I see a lot of people using Empire Pistoliers and just torso swapping for their favourite regiment.

I was also thinking of using one of the many motorcycle kits on the market.

I was lucky and won an auction of 10 GW attilan rough riders and 1 mounted commissar. I then discarded their ugly torsos and used the rest of their parts + Cadian torsos and anvil industry heads to make some, in my humble opinion, great looking riders.

In the warp, searching for Marbo

I use the legs and bikes from the dark vengeance set, and the torsos/limb/heads of cadian/catachan bits.

Guardsman bikers ftw!

After all these years of searching for Marbo...he found me. Heretics beware! He's back!

Conversion of fireforge miniatures, the mongol cavalry make good models.

as for wargear, plasma < melta even though plasma masturbation is key in this edition since gets hot disappeared.

Scout from the border and kill stuff, and watch them die. They still got their suicide role, but can do it better this edition.

I'm using Freeguild Pistoliers horses with Victoria legs/arms/heads and Cadian torsos. Working on them right now.

Death Riders of Krieg.

Well, I mainly use them as Death Riders, but I wouldn't use others models if I were to play Rough Riders.

That is amazing, if I didn't already have a bunch of Death Riders I would consider buying those. I need to convince one of my friends that plays IG to buy them so I can see a squad of them on the table.

Those are pretty brilliant. Are they scratch built (other than the internal guardsman)? Or did you use something for a base?

Dark elf cold ones kit-bashed with Cadian bits. The hard part was getting legs that looked decent. I ended up using the straight legs you used to get for tank commanders in the Russ kit. They needed to be split in half and re-positioned, then have stirrups added. For the lances I just chopped the ends off the cold one lances and added mortar rounds to the end, imagining that they are shaped charges that get one use. Then just add some equipment to the back of the cold ones to make them look more 40k and give the sergeant's mount a few bionics to make it stand out. I only have a really old photo, I think from 5th ed, but you may see what I attempted to do. I have since changed to 40mm bases as the bike bases are really annoying to use and look a bit weird.

I use catachans on cold ones. The standard box legs fit pretty well (the goofy planted feet stance) i also used old tank rider metal sculpts and dont bother with the lances. I figure the dino does the same kind of hit.

What i would love to see is mukaali riders for a tallarn army. that would blow me away.

I went with mad robot's bikes and riders with some Catachan bits thrown on and Victoria lambs Lance's. Be warned, her resin Lance arms are insanely fragile, I'd honestly recommend either scratch building your Lance's or using something in plastic from another kit. Vic's won't hold up on too many more trips to the game store.

Is it the arms that tend to break, or the lances?

I use a variety of conversions. (some of these can be found in my Dakka Gallery if you don't want to follow links to my weebly pages)
First up, Sculpts on dinosaurs! And horses. Ogrynns in here, why I don't know. Also a bunch of basic horses from the Deux Vault minis and then amazon riders.

Big fan of rough riders, Have 50 or so sculpted (sadly, lost impetus on the dino riders, so still at 5 for a command squad and the three ogrynns...I really had this hope they were going to give the option of mounts for officers and such)

PS: I would probably sell some of these if someone were interested...

the Lances, the arms are great, it's just the specific lances break very easily since they're thin resin and kind of brittle.

Thanks. They were fun to build. They use marine plasma cannon back packs, vehicle autolaunchers, crisis suit feet and devilfish landing gear all mixed together with a bit of GS to hide the joins and quite a lot of pinning

If anyones got original giant horsies (GW), or bits of said horsies, send a pm.

I really like those Terror Birds. Might get some for a Tzeentch warband.

So, I am just getting back into Warhammer after many years. Are rough riders hard to come by? Do they not make games-workshop ones anymore?

I tried looking on eBay but couldn't really find anything, just a couple of ridiculous priced buy-it-now ones.

I think I have 15 in various stages of being unpainted, which is why I am asking.

A heads up to anyone wanting horses for rough riders - Perry miniatures American Civil War horses are a very good match both in scale and detail to original rough rider horses.
