We're excited to finally announce the ModCube 2.0! We've taken our original ModCube design, and improved every aspect of it for the new version. Features of the ModCube 2.0 include:

• Full color tokens!
• Smaller 16mm cube size (same as a standard gaming die)
• Token size equivalent to the original ModCube
• Magnetic, making for very easy to remove tokens!

Our website update just went live at http://www.modcube.com , and several blogs will be posting the news today. Please check out the site or the pics below and let us know what you think! More sets will be coming soon

We'll be at the Nova Open later this week revealing the ModCube 2.0 in-person, and would love your feedback! We've got some great ideas for new sets and will be revealing more soon

We're also planning to self-fund the tooling costs, just like with the original ModCube, and hopefully have production samples to show when we launch, which we're targeting for December.

Let us know what you think

Nice improvement!

I have a set of 1.0 mod cubes and they're a great product but these look fantastic.

The link to your website in your post needs to be fixed. Looks interesting. Since the faces look recessed, how do you get the tokens off the magnets?

Thanks for that, bbb, I've fixed it!

Someone just asked the exact same question on the Beasts of War article . We'll be including a removal tool with each set, which we'd originally planned to just be a stronger magnet, but the tokens stay in too tightly - the magnet would have to be too big! So, we're going to try a small suction cup. At Nova this week we'll probably be using everyone's favorite temporary adhesive (Bluetac!) to remove them

Here's a link to the Beasts of War article, if you use that site and wouldn't mind leaving a comment, that would be awesome - Dawn has been amazing for us with both versions and we want to show our support
http://www.beastsofwar.com/modcube/3dg-announces-20-headed-kickstarter/

Finally, we'll definitely be teasing more sets in the coming weeks - so if you're not an X-wing player don't worry, there will hopefully be something that interests you!

Those look brilliant. I backed the original set and they were great if a little large. These look super duper awesome.

Just... Just... Take my money....

(oh and any thoughts on tokens for guildball - conditions mainly?)

I wish DARK AGE was more popular, as MOD CUBE stuff for it would be fantastic.

It is a great skirmish scale game with beautiful miniatures and a great rule set, but there are a lot of status effects to track, and they vary from faction to faction.

Would be great for MOD CUBE 2.0, but I don't know that the sales would justify the expenditure of effort, resources, etc.

Unless the cost of customizing inserts has come way down?

INFINITY seems like a no-brainer for this too. Did INFINITY sets sell well enough for you with MOD CUBE 1.0?

Anyway, MOD CUBE 2.0 looks great though - and going magnetic is quite nice as well. Ease of use is greatly improved.

(I'm sure someone will wander by and tell you about the dangers of magnets and how you can/cannot market/sell them as such, etc. - but you've probably already looked into that too! )

Thanks, Jangustus! Really appreciate that

Many sets that were included the first time around are likely to make it in as stretch goals at least, since we already have art existing for them! However, Guildball wasn't one that got a lot of traction, so maybe I can PM you with what you'd like to see in a set like that?

We're definitely going to be making sets compatible with X-wing, 40K and Malifaux from the start - but hopefully we'll get to a lot more

Edit: Ninja'ed! Infinity sets did really well with the original Kickstarter, but the game is so complex I'm not sure one set could cover all of it! I could definitely use feedback on this. Dark Age would be further down the line, as you guessed. We'll also be doing videos showing the strength of the magnets being contained in the cubes, and hopefully have actual production samples to show by the time we launch, since the tooling is going to get underway in September.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

These look great for tokens, do they work as actual dice? What's the statistical variance like relative to "proper" dice if so(doesn't need to be perfect obviously, most of us still use GW dice)?

Manchu, We're definitely planning to do Legion compatible ones when it releases

Yodhrin, thanks for the heads up, we were fixing a bug with the email signup form but the site is working again now! The 2.0 cubes work for rolling, and after this week's Nova Open convention we'll be posting a video showing that. Although you do have to make sure your table isn't metal first

That brings up a concern with how many people use magnets on their figs now, I wonder if we will see modcubes grabbing and dragging figures or assimilating arms and weapons off of figures

I don't think you'd see it any more than you do with figures that have magnets attracting other figures, Theophony! The main factor (other than magnet rating) for attraction strength is distance between magnets, and so the thing we really had to keep in mind was to avoid them attracting other nearby cubes, since their faces could be flush next to one another.

To avoid this happening, they all only have magnets with the "north" side facing out. This also results in if you roll them, they repel one another rather than being attracted - it's actually pretty cool!

I assume you could also sink magnets into tanks/large bases to keep ModCubes attached, so you wouldn’t have to have the cubes chase around things they are marking.

These are quite nifty. Much like the original one, I personally have little to no use, but it's cool all the same. I may back and give em away just to support a fellow dakka poster

It's primarily the conditions of which there are five: Burning, Poison, Bleeding, Snared, Knocked Down. These would be cool to see, though it may be that as previously you have generic pictures/colours that can be used for these?

Thanks for listening though, both on this, and the previous Modcubes

Nevelon - Putting magnets on the base of large models was my plan for my personal army . I've actually done this before in prior editions and it looks really sharp! The 40k 8th set should really lend itself to that

Bi'ios, ph34r, and Piston - Thanks very much! And Bi'ios, maybe one of the upcoming sets will tempt you after all

Jangustus - We were just talking about this in the DCM forum! For Guildball, would just unlabeled (but really clear) symbols for each of those conditions work? They actually all lend themselves to a universal set, which we offered the first time around (and can vastly improve now with full color tokens) and that is very likely to make it in early, and maybe even be one of the initial offerings. Thank you for the helpful feedback!

Great! I had wondered if they would fit in a universal set, that sounds brilliant. Unlabelled symbols is how Steamforged and Muse on Minis do the tokens themselves, so with full colour thats great.

Well you can count on it then . Just one more question, any thoughts on what you'd use for the 6th face? It could be something generic that might mean different things for different factions, or perhaps ice pack?

Oh, is there any chance you might, in future, have a less colourful and more..."Blanche-y" set of inserts? Black gothic numerals etched into faux-aged bone sort of thing.

Not sure there is anything particular that I can think of. I was hoping to get multiples of each token when you get them done and then just mix and match over a few cubes (and it may depend on what other things are in the generic pack - some ofnthose may well be usable for other effects). There aren't really any other general mechanics that I can think of off hand - each guild has loads of individual things, but that won't really work easily with modcubes.

Nova Open auctioned off the above set of ModCube 2.0 prototypes in their charity auction, and I was happy to see a lot of bids! The winner already reached out to us on Facebook so hopefully we'll get some pics of them in action and we'll also be sending a set to the Stele Open organizers for playtesting and determining the exact mix of tokens for the final Dogfight set.

We also made some great contacts at the Con who are going to help us finalize the Malifaux set. We're hoping to show it and the 8th edition wound counter set later this month . Finally, we'll be starting the tooling for the cubes in September as well, and hopefully have production samples ready for launch in December!

Thanks very much to those who came by the booth and gave us feedback, the reception was really positive and we can't wait to show you more! We also really welcome any feedback here on Dakka

Cheers!

I bought the first style before (great design and price ), I'll have to think about the new style as the 1.0 does what I need it to. But if I can get custom panels easy enough then the smaller size might be better.

Until Steamforged make any more conditions I'd go with the Ice Pack. I use my old icy sponge tokens to show when someone has had Come On Mate used on them as it's once per turn.

Theophony, we're definitely planning on a custom service, as printed tokens lend themselves to it much more than our previous etched ones. However, that would be coming later in 2018 after we get the Kickstarter fulfilled!

Henry, thanks, I do think we'll go with Ice Pack in the Status set. I was really proud of the art we made for it the first time, as it's a hard thing to represent

Thanks again for the feedback everyone, and we'll post up with the Malifaux and 8th edition sets later in the month!
