How serious are you about your 40k on a scale of 1 to 8?

It could be any aspect, painting, sculpting, army lore, rules, gameplay, anything.

The only caveat is you must vote with your highest score. If you're serious about painting but not the game don't average it out and try to vote on 40k as a whole. Make your vote and post what you're serious about.

By serious I mean, you enjoy that aspect to the point that you will spend extra time making sure details are right, putting in practice or learning new techniques, etc. As an example I take my army lore seriously and will go to great pains to make sure I represent that properly when painting or list building.

Attack! Erm, I mean... Vote!

I entered 6/8, which is probably accurate. I voted 6/8 mainly due to my enjoyment of holistic gaming. That is my lame term for an all encompassing passion for the hobby, of which 40K is a small portion. My 40K table and miniatures, etc. are not on the level of my Old West stuff as far as dedication goes, but it's close.

Gaming: Like it. 4/8
Competing: Don't care. 1/8
Painting: Like it. 5/8
Lore/Fluff (particularly for my own factions) 6/8
Tinkering with rules: 6/8
Accurate models/WYSIWYG: 6/8

I would say several of these could be bumped by one additional point if my local group was as dedicated to some facets as I am (my out-of-town group is far more on my wavelength than the local guys). So an active community with the same interests would definitely add 1 to some of these categories.

Painting: 3 (Prefer to have at least Tabletop quality for my minis, but I'm no Golden Daemon winner - got a lot of minis to catch up on)

Sculpting: 1 (I suck, but have done some minor modeling, such as cloaks for my Tau)

Army Lore: 2 (I know the basics, have read several codexes and rulebooks, but not into Black Library)

Rules: 3 (I have all the editions back to RT and have read them; know at least how to basically play without needing the BRB in front of me. I know most basic troop statlines, but haven't memorized any datasheets. There's a couple of factions whose rules I just don't know - such as Daemons)

Gameplay: 1 (I haven't played 40K since a few months after release, been working steadily on my own version. Watching battle reports bore me. Can't stand tournaments)

Collecting: 6 (I have 12 armies - Space Marines/Dark Angels, Eldar, Imperial Guard, Adeptus Mechanicus, Tyranids, Orks, Tau, Knights, Custodes, Necrons, Chaos Space Marines and a handful of Dark Eldar)

It never ends well

Gonna steal your breakdown,
Gaming: 7/8
Competing: 7/8
Painting: 7/8
Lore/Fluff (particularly for my own factions) 6/8
Tinkering with rules: 4/8
Accurate models/WYSIWYG: 7/8

I love the modelling aspect of the game. I also enjoy good competition, so I try to play in as many events as possible. Since I play in a tournament every month or so, I do my best to work my models which also ties into the modelling aspect.

I play to win. I don't bring the biggest cheese out there, but I always have a good idea what I am going to play. I spend hours devising tactics and coming up with an optimized list based on the small range of models I have.

I explore not only the armies in my list, but also other armies in order to beat them better.

I don't paint. I am not skilled enough nor do I have the money to buy the paints.

Due to the lack of models, I proxy weapons quite a lot. I proxy Grey Knights units as Space Marines when playing competitively and my opponent consents.

I don't refer to the rules when playing. I learn all that is required to run the models I bring before the battle. I get annoyed when my opponents don't know a rule pertaining to his army that I happen to know.

I used to read Black Library books a lot. Recently, the habit has fallen out due to lack of good books to read. BL is churning out the same stuff with little innovation.

I write fanfiction for Warhammer 40k on the net. I do read the lore extensively and take part in discussions.

GW magazines are a miss to me. I am simply not into them. I have also never tried any of their board games like Space Hulk or Conquest.

I play many Warhammer 40k games including Dawn of War, Freeblade, Final Liberation, Battlefleet Gothic Leviathan (NOT Armada) and Legacy of Dorn.

I watch battle reports on Youtube. I have a subscription with Miniwargaming.

Overall, I would say 6/8 on your scale.

Painting and collecting are the only things I'm really serious about.

I love to play, but playing the game is a rare event.

I build paint and play my tyranids and Seraphon, and i'm quite serious about them, painting in particular (even if the results don't always show that).

Not only that, but i also build and paint my brother's dark angels and high elfs, since he only plays.

Hmm for me?

I play to win, but not at the expense of everything 4.5
I like to stick to my theme, while still having a chance 6
I'm not super competitive (aka tournaments and net lists) 2
I like painting, but I have a hard time starting, and I'm slow 5
I love making conversion and mashing kits. 7
I'm mostly casual about the whole thing. 8

So it looks like I'm an 8.

I did 6/8.

I consider myself fairly competitive, to the point where I'm willing to play in tournaments that come to me and the local league, but I don't travel to seek out larger ones [though that's also a question of means. Travelling further than a day trip can rack up to be more than the cost of a full army.]

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

A solid 4 for me.
Really enjoy 40k lore, list building, factions.
Quite enjoy playing and trying out lists.
Less enjoy building/painting these days.
WYSIWYG and the more hardcore mindset - nope.

"Holistic gaming". LMAO.

Have you noticed an acceleration of strangeness in your hobby as of late? Perhaps a series of intense or extraordinary events...

I voted 6/8. I read a lot of books, buy a lot of models, paint quite often, and spend a fair amount of time thinking about this hobby. On the flip side I rarely play, and when I do it's super casual, I have no interest in competitive gaming.

Serious enough that I enjoy playing and discussing it, and reading the books.

Not serious to the point where I put myself in a financial struggle to get a new toy for the game. Not to the point where I demand everyone that plays with me have a 100% accurately painted army, or refuse to play against other Imperium armies, etc.

4/8.

I was very into 40k between 3rd and 6th. By the end of 7th, I’d considered selling off my collections and just doing anything else. I really hated 7th, by the end.

This carried on into a comfortable apathy towards 8th until just recently. I bought my AM codex last week, and the Kill Team rules at the same time, even cracked out the paints to get working on a Commissar-Russ this weekend.

So I’m very much on the casual right now, but I’m casually excited about 40k right now.

I keep seeing a lot of this.

7th was very competitive, at least in my experience. It burned me out so hard I just ended with my models packed in boxes and playing other games.

Try some narrative, fun Kill-Team. Make it a point to name and convert your specialists in unique ways. Set up a whole story with your friends.

Doing that turned the game around completely for me.

I like competitive. My problems were more game mechanics related. Every game was invisible *super-thing* with jump-shoot-jump scatterbikes or D-Palooza or Imp Knights or Decurion unkillables or 2+ cover save Ravenwing or a billion free transports...

Guard did not do well in 7th, BA were so bad I gave up and played Ult-Red Marines because they were better at assault than BA.

8th is an overly casual experience for me, but it’s a pleasant enough diversion and not a painful slog. That said, I am looking forward to a bit of narrativeness in Kill Team.

Right now I'm only just getting back into 40k so I'm about a 3, it won't be long before it becomes a problem.

I bought an old 4th edition rules book initially just to read up on the game universe. I bought all the 6th edition codexes, 2nd hand in a neat little bundle, just to see what what I wanted to play in 7th. I read all the lore from those codexes and bought about 12 or so 2nd hand novels, only read Horus Rising and False Gods so far.

I enjoy building models and list building the most but I'm not very good at painting. I want to be able to paint like what's in the books but it takes so long. I bounce around from hobby to hobby when I get bored of what I'm doing. If I try to paint too much my focus shifts away from the hobby.

No, the paper does not beat The Rock.

I have been playing 40k for about 4 years now (beginning of 7th edition) and I have to say I love this game! It's just a lot of fun to collect, build and paint the models, and the game is awesome, especially now in 8th edition. I might have to say I like the painting and modelling side more, but both are a lot of fun.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

I voted 8. Not because I am a fanatic, but because I try to do all things in my life with the maximum amount of dedication and effort. In 40k that means to take great care when sculpting and painting as well as proper and friendly conduct when gaming. No halfsies

6 seems right. I 'm spending far too much time reading stuff on Dakka and other forums to go lower than that, even though I get to play not very often Since I started to read Black Library books now and went to Warhammerfest I guess I'm doing all parts of the hobby aside from tournaments, as these usually use very uninteresting missions to play.

I'm gonna steal this. For me, I enjoy being competitive, and pushing the game as far ass it can go. I enjoy building and converting thanks to my inner ork, but detest painting as I stuggle to sit still for long periods and am incapable of doing detail

Gaming: The point of Warhammer 40k 6/8
Competing: I enjoy it but am reluctant to travel to major tournaments 7/8
Painting: Horrible necessity 2/8
Lore/fluff: really like some lore, not to fussed 4/8
Tinkering with rules: I take what GW provides and exploit it, not make my own 3/8
Accurate models: 5/8

Owz it work.
