It might be worth clearing all the dead wood out. Some of the older posts aren't going to encourage attendance in my view.

Eh, deleting the old posts probably isn't going to happen (I'd be sad if it did quite frankly). The history of the place is part of what makes it what it is. If prospective new members aren't into it, that's okay.

It will just put people off that is all. If you want it to be a success then toning things down would help. If you didn't want to delete them perhaps archive them somewhere. If the first thing people see is F**k this or that then i doesn't give an initial impression of maturity that people might want to get involved with.

I have enjoyed the OT on dakka. Been a lot of good times and memories. If I insulted or seriously annoyed anybody or blocked people, then you have my apologies. It was never personal.

The nerd rage over Star Wars films was something to behold, but I think the highlight for me was the banter in 2016, during the EU referendum, when we had the battle of the fishing boats on the Thames.

Regardless of where you stand on Brexit, that was funny. I honestly thought I would die from broken ribs or choke to death on the cup f tea I happened to be drinking at that moment. That's how much i was laughing.

Yeah, I could post on other dakka forums, but would it be the same? It's like that scene in Spinal Tap where they say, who wants to be milking it in Japan or Europe for a few more years. let's retire with dignity.

I have made an account over there. Just to see if any interesting discussions spring up.

It certainly seems to be kicking off over there. The OT away from OT, as it were.

The US thread already has 3 pages of posts, good to see it getting traction

The UK thread could use some love, though, so get over there if you're interested in discussing things happening across the pond!

sirwinston41 started a thread for politics from the rest of the world here as well.

No problem! Hopefully it brings some new life to the Wasteland, at least for awhile.

I can already see the positive consequences of removing politics from Dakka entirely. We got rid of DINLT.

Joke aside, the Wasteland has a very fitting name. This forum is so "has been" and "user-enemy" that you can really feel ending here is the same as being exiled in a gakhole. And I'm not even talking of the annoying messages asking you to AGREE or decline the collection of your personnal data. Oh well.

I will give this Wasteland a go. Dakka Politics thread is what made this site for me. The snark, the passive aggressiveness, the occasional fuming overt aggressiveness, the hilarious posturing of political purity from each fringe. It was a beautiful thing.

Ah well. Let's see if this new, safer, kinder gentler, neutered Dakka has the same charm.

I would probably change my user name, though, if that option was available. . It made sense at 3am when I was drunk on cheap vodka, but in the cold light of day, I don't like it.

A very tiny part of me would love to sell my house and business, and make yakface an offer he couldn't refuse, and get him to sell me dakkadakka.

So, ban politics here, officially endorse politics on a pseudo-official alternate site with the exact same people participating and a sole purpose of holding the politics threads that aren't allowed here. If you're so concerned that politics discussion will cause divisions and anger why would you do this? Why would you encourage those same discussions on a "different" site, where they aren't even subject to official moderation? Do you honestly think that people aren't going to carry their political grudges right back to the official site? If you're going to do this you might as well just remove the absurd politics ban in the first place.

Which would make sense if this was truly "elsewhere on the internet" and not a site that is separate in name only, established with official endorsement for the sole purpose of being an extension of the primary site and having the same members. It's incredibly naive to think that people are going to get into an argument on this "separate" site and not carry it right back to dakka. It's like a store banning politics discussions because it will divide the community but encouraging everyone in the store to step outside and have the exact same argument right in front of the store. A few feet of physical distance isn't going to make them magically forget their disagreements when they walk back inside.

Peregrine has posted a lot on this subject, and I agree with most of it.

But the reality of the situation is this: yakface's website. yakface's rules.

It's as simple as that, and we can take it or leave it.
