SImple: it's not Dakka and Dakka doesn't give a gak what you do on the non-Dakka site or if Dakka members organize on a non-Dakka site to do the gak they don't wan't them to do on Dakka.
Were people able to curse on the Minecraft server? Were people able to curse on a discourse server? Are people able to bring a porn to a game organized via the player finder on Dakka?
Dakka doesn't give a gak about those things, because it wasn't Dakka and you didn't get Dakka bans or warnings for gak you do in places that aren't Dakka.
Everybody else can figure it out.

And this is where you are wrong. The URL does not have "dakka" in the name, but it's a site established by dakka members with official sanction from dakka for the sole purpose of those members having particular conversations that are not welcome on the primary site. It is not a separate forum that happens to have some dakka members mixed in with a larger population, it is not another game which might happen to have discussion between its players as a side effect. If you masked off the URL on this "separate" site and looked at a discussion there you'd have no idea you weren't on the primary site.
The stated goal of the politics ban was to eliminate the divisions and anger that political discussions create. IOW, if Peregrine and {generic right-wing poster} get into a fight over politics we lose respect for each other and that carries over into hobby-related threads. Supposedly, with politics banned, that doesn't happen anymore. Except now there's a pseudo-official extension of the OT where that exact same discussion can happen, we can have the exact same feelings about each other, and those feelings can carry over into dakka threads exactly the same way. The only way this doesn't happen is if the pseudo-official extension fails to attract many members and shuts down from lack of use, at which point why endorse it and attempt to promote it if the only way it can succeed is by failing?

If that's the case then yes, I would prefer that they be honest and say "we are lazy and would rather ban whole areas of discussion then run a properly-moderated forum" instead of smug nonsense about leaving politics at the door and having a beer with your worst enemies. But unfortunately I think they believe the nonsense.

The point is that it isn’t Dakka, so Dakka doesn’t care.
If Dakka makes a rule saying “don’t play soccer”, and a bunch of Dakkanauts decide to pick up their ball and declare “fine, we are going to the soccer field over here to play if we can’t play here”, and Dakka says “great idea, to play soccer on a soccer field, well even tell everyone where to find you”, the soccer field doesn’t suddenly become owned by Dakka.
So while you are over here trying to cross reference every persons online identities to track people you think are donkey-caves:

When a non-essential task takes up a notable amount of effort within a project yet provides minimal benefit to the primary purpose removing it is efficiency, not laziness. I get that you are angry but slinging insults is just proving them right.

No, of course the soccer field isn't owned by dakka. However, if the supposed reasoning behind the soccer ban is "soccer makes people hate each other and disrupts the hobby threads on dakka" then it's absurd to suggest that the dakka members all go play soccer next door and then come right back to dakka. They're still going to hate each other exactly the same way no matter who technically owns the soccer field.
So while you are over here trying to cross reference every persons online identities to track people you think are donkey-caves:
It hardly takes cross referencing when a quick glance at the linked threads shows people posting under the exact same names they use on dakka. Which is exactly what you would expect from a pseudo-official extension of the OT forum.

Peregrine, the solution is simple:
If you don't participate there, and you don't make a big deal of it on here, then it should literally not affect you at all.
If it does somehow cause further friction between you and another poster, you still have access to the yellow triangle of friendship. The mods will base their decision off of the behavior on Dakka, and act accordingly.
Case closed. It's Miller time.

Or any thread they post on, on any other board they use. Most people tend to use the same name across a multitude of websites unless its already taken cause we're lazy gaks and can't be bothered to come up with a different name everywhere we post. I recognise a few names on here from my times in the arcologies threads on the infinity boards for example.

FWIW, I kind of agree with Peregrine, though probably not for the same reasons.
Dakka bans not only posting porn, but linking to porn, and that makes sense to me.
Dakka band impoliteness and has a language filter, but endorses and links to a site that doesn't have those things?
I don't have any problem with the wasteland, people can make whatever forums they want about whatever topics they want, I won't be making an account but I don't care either way.
I just don't see why the mods needed to officially endorse it, at that point it does start to become an extension of dakka.
IMO the mods should have just left people to make their own way there rather than officially recommending and endorsing the thread (even if they happen to be happy about it behind closed doors).

The premise of the politics ban is that political discussions inherently cause people to "make a big deal of it" on here. The fact that the URL for the discussion between the exact same people is now a pseudo-official extension of the OT instead of "dakkadakka.com" is not going to make people behave any better.

And the last time there was an outright ban, the discussions filtered into other sections of the forum in little volatile snippets. If they can shove the bulk of it out the door, it will be much easier to deal with any issues that would have found a way to come in here anyhow.
Please, give peace a chance.

Looks like I need to clarify my post guys:
What I meant was simply, we'd welcome folks to continue talking about politics elsewhere, but we're no longer allowing it in Dakka. Hordini (quite generously) immediately volunteered that folks should consider The Wasteland, and I personally think this is a brilliant idea since it's always been a community of Dakkanauts.
However, it is definitely not officially endorsed, or connected to Dakka in any way, shape, or form. It's just an alternate site that has historically been a place Dakka posters go to blow off steam, and discuss things that don't fit on Dakka (we originally had no OT section here at all, for instance). For a history on how it got started, check this article:
https://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/The_History_of_Dakka
If you have any more questions about my (RiTides) take on this, please PM me and I'd be happy to talk about it! But, this was just a suggestion, and if it's not for you there are lots of other options to talk politics. It's really up to you!
Any questions, again just PM me. Cheers

I agree that the staff here run the gamut from cheekily smug to unbearably smug, but they aren’t lazy, and you have to know that. I think you’re confusing your loss of a favorite toy with some sort of moral high ground. I’ve been there, and I understand how it feels, but let’s not pretend that there aren’t good reasons to do what they’re doing.

Fixture of Dakka
|
Reddit remains a thing. As do the other thousand forums with off topic sections.
Oddly enough the wargaming forums I peruse typically don't have sections where politics or religions are discussed at all. Dakka seemed like an exception, not the rule. ...And well given the habit those types of threads have had on Dakka for getting themselves locked, that doesn't sound like they involved particularly productive discussions.
That this thread's became a back door into discussing the ban, and an outlet for those who oppose it, is just asking for this to be locked, despite the author's intentions. Which is a bit sad. But well, I suppose some are taking this fickle loss harder than others.

And this was one of its virtues. In a world full of cowardice and smug "leave politics at the door, have a beer with Nazis" nonsense dakka was one of the few sites that actually acknowledged that people care about politics and want to discuss it. It is disappointing to see the site descend back into the sea of mediocrity.

What? Do you really think that removin discussions of politics and religion from the OT is going to detract from your ability to discuss the tabletop gaming hobby on Dakka because you can’t figure out which posters are Nazis? If you can’t engage in a mundane superficial pleasant exercise like discussing shared interests with fellow hobbyists without first finding out their political positions and determining if they pass your personal litmus test of acceptability then that’s a you problem not a Dakka problem. The site requiring that Dakkanauys discuss the hobby with others in a polite manner is just basic decency it isn’t some kind of tacit endorsement of Nazis and it’s honeatly worrisome that you see it that way.
