Welcome to the thread for Road to Renown, a remaster of the Path to Glory system as it existed in the classic days of 1st and 2nd edition. It aims to smooth out the 'rough edges' of the classic Path to Glory experience while still maintaining enough random factors to keep things exciting, as well as vastly expanding on the options available to players. This includes a restructuring of the basic rules around two campaign options, a complete update to all warband tables, and an overhaul of follower rewards. Other features include making non-battletome allegiances available for use, transferring bonuses earned in Warcry campaigns to Age of Sigmar, incorporation of the Anvil of Apotheosis rules, and more!

That's a pretty good job you did there. I like the introduction of renown as different ressource to upgrade your warband and the possibility to add Forgeworld units to your warband.

Did you test this system already with your players ? From a first read, it's interesting to give it a try with my friends.

Awesome stuff. Good work. I can already see the veins in foreheads throbbing wiith things like zombie dragon lords not able to bring a bunch of blood knights out of the gate (my favorite regional choice and the one that causes the most grief when trying to curb lol)

Thanks! I have not tested this ruleset as a whole yet but there are parts of it like awakened artifacts and the death warband tables that I have used in previous leagues.

Yeah the LoN tables were borked from the onset; I've been running custom tables for Death in my leagues for some time now. On the upside for death the ability to increase unit size really helps units like skeletons, and LoN in general.

Some minor updates based on preliminary playtesting;

-Varghulf Courtier went up to 3 initial followers

-Plague Monks went down to 10 per follower choice

-Several changes to the Stormcast tables; split hero options into regular and elite, removed 10-vanguard option but added 5-man to 3-4 on the regular retinue, and moved 5-man castrators to the regular retinue.

Two weeks into running a full campaign at my flgs and things are going pretty well. I'm also fitting in test games here and there with one-off warbands, trying to get as much testing/data in anticipation of doing an update once the campaign is over.

Some planned changes:
-KoS can't take the Sinistrous Hand
-DoK Medusa on Foot added as an elite hero option
-Plague Furnace moved to grand champion
-Look through champions without spellcasting ability and give them higher starting followers on a case-by-case basis.

On the fence about:
-Making a GUO with Bell a seperate champion option from one with Blade, with one less starting follower. The difference in performance is pretty big.
-Reducing the starting followers of all the Lord-Arcanums by 1, due to having three really good abilities on top of solid stats (Cycle of the Storm, Spirit Flasks, and Prime Electrids).
-Reducing the Wrath of Khorne thirster's followers by 1 because he can shoot MWs and has a great command ability.
-Make Stormfiend units spend an extra renown to include models with warpfire projectors.

I'm also specifically looking for feedback from any Idoneth players. Namarti are in a tricky spot where a 10-man unit is too strong for normal retinue but also a bit weak for an elite retinue, while also being the main line troops for the army. I am still trying to figure out a hybrid approach to address this.

Destruction and Death have seen some small updates. Gloomspite got a few changes to the basic retinue making them more user-friendly and to have boingrot bounderz moved to elites. Ogors saw similar adjustments on their charts, and both icebrow hunter options gained one additional follower.

On the death side Ossiarch Bonereapers had some significant adjustments. Most notably taking the Petrifax Elite subfaction reduces initial followers by one. The gothizzar harvester's follower cost was increased by one. The boneshaper has had his initial followers reduced by one and been moved to the elite hero table. The Elite tables were condensed into one and the 10-man mortek guard option was removed entirely.

I am on the edge as to if the liege-kavalos should be dropped to 2, but left it at 3 for now. Feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I'll propose this to my local AoS group, since last I saw there wasn't a league going on in the area.

Last time we did an AoS league they used the normal PtG rules, and some folk were unsatisfied about it.

The normal PtG rules are not very good. I have used it in my campaigns and it always gets a lot of complaints for being not very good / borderline bad.

Like many of GWs narrative/campaign rules it is (intentionally or not) best used as a toolbox or framework to build something one's local group will enjoy. I eventually got to a point where the PtG leagues I was running outgrew the basic system GW puts out, though we do still use the champion/follower reward charts (for now).

I also have rules for Brettonian and Tomb Kings warbands incoming as well as a special upgrade that lets players convert a warcry band into a unit with unique bonuses based on what it has earned in warcry campaigns.

Chaos Warband tables have been updated to bring them in line with the new battletome! To eliminate redundancy the daemon prince champion listings from mono-god tables have been removed, but like all champions can still be taken with whatever allegiance they have the keyword for. On a related note the gaunt summoner on disc has been left in the Tzeentch chart rather than appearing on the StD chat, it has also dropped one initial follower to compensate for summoning a free unit.

I have tentatively put the Sorcerer Lord on foot as three followers, the difficulty being that while he is a mere 5-wound, single-cast wizard he hands out a re-roll save buff to an army with very good saves and I cannot understate how powerful that is. He also has a 4+ save himself and an obscenely powerful warscroll spell. But I would love to hear feedback on the matter.

Daemon princes have been moved to grand champions but left at three initial followers for now since they are very vulnerable to MWs and don't have ready access to healing, but the potency of their command abilities might justify certain ones (looking at you, Nurgle) going down to two. Again, would love to hear feedback.

Warband tables have been updated! This means major updates to Kharadron Overlords and to Tzeentch! In addition, where possible a handful of 'quality-of-life' changes were made on various tables in order to prevent players getting 'stuck' with a unit option only available in resin when attempting to roll for an option available in plastic.

Tables for Brettonia and Tomb kings are on their way and will be in a separate legacy document, probably tomorrow. If there are any factions not currently represented that you would like to see let me know!

In other good news the main rules have been updated to 1.2! A number of wording changes were made to (hopefully) make rules easier to understand, and the rules for using Awakened Artifacts were tweaked.

Thanks! Though this is content I am making for my community anyways, I figure the least I can do is share it with others! Even if it never gets used I'd hope people can see certain ideas and adapt them for their own use.

On a different note the Brets & Tomb Kings are up now. As always I am extremely happy to hear feedback or questions!

Well after MANY more hours than I initially expected I have finished the 1.4 update! The entire rewards system has been overhauled, producing a central set of reward tables for everyone that roughly follows the old Regiments of Renown rules. Grand alliances and a number of racial keywords have bespoke bonuses as well as every single allegiance, ensuring every warband has something unique to draw upon. While the 'core' rewards are relatively simple such as hit re-rolls or bonuses to charge, the more specific ones are extremely tailored and can get pretty crazy with ample narrative potential. Also included is something we all knew needed to be there; incorporation of the Anvil of Apotheosis rules!

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/kx6abv0am12rx9k/AADIA301VDdAigp7AkvNbTN6a?dl=0

As always, please let me know if you have any comments or feedback! In the meantime, what is your favorite follower reward? I am particularly proud of the Nurgle one, but I also think Slaves to Darkness players better bring toast because all the other armies got jelly.

EDIT: My apologies, the link was off. Now fixed.

Fixed an error with the Beasts of Chaos table where the retinue charts had been incorrectly updated and edited the warband tables to include Lethisian Army, which I had forgotten to enter. I am sure both of the Lethys players out there will appreciate this

Version 1.5 is now up, mainly this is a readability update where I split up paragraphs, added more labels, and re-worded things to be more easily understood. Hopefully I succeeded; from my perspective all the rules are perfectly clear so I have NO IDEA if something is hard to understand unless I get feedback

The main rules document has been updated to 1.5c, with some small changes to using the Anvil of Apotheosis as well as formatting changes to hopefully make it more readable. Also incorporation of the Anvil of Death from the most recent White Dwarf.

Well it has been several weeks without FAQs so I am putting up the new updates without them.

Versions 1.5 of the Chaos and Order warband tables are up. Both feature some minor reformatting in several places to use space more efficiently. Order has some minor changes to Idoneth, Free Cities, and KO, and the update for DoK to go with the new battletome. Depending on how they FAQ prayers they  may see alterations in the near future. Chaos got a reorganized and updated roster for Slaanesh, as well as new options to allow marked Beasts of Chaos champions/units (since the relevant battalions normally used for the purpose are unavailable in PtG).

Let me know what you think!

Updated before the actual release! I think that excuses my next three days of being late...

-Bilepiper and Scrivener went to 5 starting followers (down from 6)

-Lumineth tables fully updated!

A small but notable update to the core rules; champions can now pick their command trait (if it is not fixed by sub-faction). This is to provide a slight boost for armies that do not have a sub-faction.

The Krulghast Excruciator has been added as a champion option. It is likely that the Death warband tables will need a complete overhaul come the Gravelords battletome so now is a particularly good time to give me any feedback you have regarding Death choices!

Sons of Behemat have arrived to the Destruction warband tables! Given their unique circumstance some special rules had to be made such that they would work in the context of Path to Glory.

GW has announced that with 3rd edition they will be doing an overhaul of Path to Glory! Where does that leave Road to Renown? Well, we don't have any details yet so we don't know how much cross-compatibility there will be. They did say they were modelling it after 40k's Crusade system, which could mean quite a few different things. If it ends up being a dramatic change I will probably leave Read to Renown the way it is as a legacy/alternate system for those who prefer it to the new one. If the new PtG is more of an update than a rework then RtR may well be rendered obsolete by the variety of new reasonably well-balanced options. And so I will keep updating it when the balance remains a complete crapshow.

In other news, I will be updating the warband tables to 1.5 shortly! What does this mean? Well in addition to giving everything a look-through I will be adding in more starting options. This will be an expansion to how certain warbands can take a monster at the start, allowing certain units to start off larger than normally available. For example, Gloomspite Gitz will gain an option to spend two of their initial followers on a 30-grot stabba unit. These units will only be available when starting a warband and not during a campaign.

So if you have any ideas as to what you would like to see, or just have feedback to give (good or bad!) I would really love to hear it!
