I was thinking about how to do a necron barge: Command or annihialation?
I looked up magnetizing the barge to see how to make it so I could best switch between the two. I found lots of videos. this was the best IMO.

One thing I like about WH40K is the fact so many people in it are willing to snare advice and help with other people without making money off it. Itcs a nice sense of community there, peolle helping peopel for no profit. I kind of like that.
What in particular do you like about WH40K?

I like the lore/fluff.
Reading a well written piece of fluff always gets my cogs turning about further possibilities or what-ifs.

My favorite thing about 40k is the same as with any other miniatures based game: The models.

Whether a special paint job, conversion or self thrown together lore and rules. I enjoy seeing what people come up. I think you can learn a lot about a person from how they paint, write or even play 40k.

Along these lines I like to take an army and put a real spin on it. A brief look at my necron dynasty background will show you what I mean. I put a very unusual but still consistent and valid under the BAW spin on it that keeps is kosher while making it very unusual.
Seeing how far you can take an army from it's usual intended direction and still keep it consistent with the official background in interesting.
Edit: well, fornicate. I tried to link to my necron dynasty background in the fiction section but the link to that page I save just leads to the main menu.

The art and the imagination. It's so easy to be inspired by the artwork of John Blanche in particular, and that grimdark aesthetic from 3rd Edition onwards - particularly any of the Mechanicum, Ecclisiarchy, Vostroyan or just about any of the horrendous nightmarish quasi-religious/techno aboomination stuff. It's just always been exciting and alluring to me.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |

The background is rich and diverse, which also lends tons of opportunities for converted models/armies. There is also a great variety of aesthetics, which makes painting loads of fun.
I also like that GW has branched out to other media (like video games) as that has really been the anchor point to help me get my kids into 40K, which we can play at home with a small collection (which is another thing I like about 40K)

The rules to play with them are so poorly constructed that even a major tourney scene are creating houseryles for it...

That the story and setting are so vast, it's a semi blank canvas. There is a lot of stories to tell in such a setting.

I love the grimdark setting. The dark unforgiving nature of the setting allows for all of this crazy over the top chainswords on guns on guns ascetic. Everyone is crazy, there are no good guys. There is a cold logic that permeates the setting that I really dig.
I love list construction. Looking for combos, anticipating what can be done on the table, putting together a list and a strategy to go with it.
Painting/modeling. I'm terrible at it but I like getting better at things and starting at such a low place it's pretty easy to see improvement. It's also very zen, much like weight lifting where I get to zone out everything except for the tiny bit of the universe right in front of me. It's a rare chance to get away from the past and the future and just be in the moment (trying not to screw up that left eye lens again...)

It's essentially a vast sandbox built on some really good lore (started off silly...became excellent...has taken a bit of a roller coaster now and then). That is probably the strongest part of the IP and one that I appreciate.

The lore is quite easy to...edit around your factions. I can easily live in my lovely fanworld where oldcrons are still around, Primaris and Ynnari don't exist and things have a charming rosy tint.

Comparing to other games, a fair amount of people play the game. Infinity or KoW, struggle to get 4-5 people at the store to play, and have small 12-16man tournaments. Same with AoS which is more or less dead. with w40k there are always opponents at the store and tournaments are three or times the size of other games.
Plastic models also are really nice to have.

It has to be the background for me. When I first started, there was so much mystery surrounding certain topics (they've since filled some of those or retconned them out of existence) and it would just draw you in.
Following that, there's nothing like making an army your own and rolling a load of dice.

I didn't magnetize but I did put together my SW flier so that I could easily switch between the two versions. I didn't glue the back twin frost turret so I could switch that out and I glued the giant frost gun to the front of the ship and glued the cover panel to the front assault door but didn't glue either one to the ship. That way either piece will slide onto the front for me to switch.
As for what I like about 40k? I'm not sure. My start into the hobby was pretty unconventional. I saw some dioramas in an old Dragon magazine and was fascinated, so I attempted to mimic it. Build myself a large cardboard castle, Picked up some random miniatures, then I found the old battlemasters set.
One weekend my brother came home from a friends house and had me get my battlemasters set.
He went over the basics of how to purchase an army using the troops from the game and the lists and tables he had scrawled in a notebook (which I'm sure were altered to favor his army).
After that, I was hooked.

The Aesthetic of John Blanche style Gothic-futurism.
The utter insanity of how over the top dark and brutal the setting is but then also the fact it's diverse enough to include the Orks and Tau in that.
Mostly though the miniatures, seeing them painted up, on a table with terrain is what it's all about.

The story which has evolved from its 2000AD brit-punk comic book foundation( which pinched ideas from most sci-fi, horror and fantasy series ) to a more original and universial-scale mythology that stands proud alongside the work of Tolkien. But 40K takes it further by inviting you to add to this great mythology with the history of your own games and characters.
The Space Marines alone have an incredible history and no two chapters are ever the same - to the point where civil wars break out. Same goes for all the other races in the 40K universe...
