Hello, everyone, so as motivation to get my mountain of unpainted miniatures painted, I’ve decided to start a project log here on dakka dakka. I’ve been a long time lurker, but haven’t been the most active poster. So to start out the year, I finished off my space marine primaris kill team. I’ve done them in a pre-heresy thousand sons scheme, as they are my favorite legion. So without further ado, here are some pictures.

Any comments or questions are appreciated

Off to a great start by the looks! I've not seen anyone build Primaris 1k Sons before so this should be one to watch! I really like the metallic red you've achieved, do you mind sharing your recipe?

An excellent start! The helmets look like they fit in perfectly, and i like them quite a bit more than the base reiver helmets.

Thanks Tyranid Horde, for the metallic red i used a black primer followed by vallejo metal color steel, dark aluminum, silver, and aluminum sprayed in a zenithial fashion with my airbrush. Then i did a number of coats of forgeworld angron clear red. Next i washed the recesses with null oil gloss.

Amazing turtles, yeah the heads fit in nicely, and I too am not a fan of the reviver skull mask helmets, I thought these would fit in with the thousand sons theme much more.

So to complete my Primaris thousand sons kill team, i just finished my librarian commander.

I’m also trying to learn how to take better pictures, and i think i need a better light setup, but anyway, any comments or criticism is appreciated.

That's a great looking kill team, and as Tyranid Horde said, not something that you see every day! I like the idea (and painting/modelling opportunities) of pre-heresy traitor legions in the 40k setting.

For better mini photography, I'd recommend Garfy's tutorials on the subject, they really helped me!

Getting back into the swing of painting again. Started working on a small group of stormcasts. Here’s my test model.

I love that Stormcast! Where's the head from? I'd maybe try black for the base rim though..

Stormcast head looks great, but that Candy red is asbsolutely gorgeous.Do you think it would work with a hairy brush or no? I have hard so many recipes for it with airbrush, but wonder if you can get something similar without it.

Seconding the question of where the helmet comes from, i love it! The whole model looks great, and quite imposing.

I'm likin' the look of the metals you got going on the model.

Good job!

Thanks for the kind words, the heads are the knights heads from puppetswar, there is also a crested variant which i plan on using for my heroes or champions.

Regarding the candy red, not sure if it will work without the airbrush, i have corrected a few mistakes by applying the metallic over the error and applying the clear red over that, so it might work.

Those guys are sweet. The color scheme and head swap make them less ostentatious, but they still have plenty of presence.

That's an impressive amount of painted minis, and to such a high standard! The two kill teams are my favorites - the paint schemes are great and the whites look nice and smooth.

Finally tried out some of the new contrast paints on some Monsterpocalypse monsters, Still not sure about them but i think they have a lot of potential. All told, they took about 90 minutes to finish

Thanks, youwasshock. So, I’m still trying out the new contrast paints, and I want to get a malifaux crew painted for the launch of 3rd edition, so i tried out some contrast paints out on some dead outlaws.

So far i’m still trying to get the learning curve of the new paint figuring out what is too thick or too thin to get the right effect, but fo an hours work total for the 3 models, not bad for tabletop quality. I like the first and third better than the middle. Any comments or criticisms are appreciated. Also anyone else have any tips or tricks for the contrast paints?

3 hombres all looking for the man who stole their right shoes. They look good. And having three serviceable models in an hour ain't bad. I think the first one turned out the best.

Back from the dead!! I haven’t posted here in quite some time but i still have been painting, not as much as I would like, but i’ve gotten a good bit done over the past 4 months.

I have been smitten with Warcry. I really like the rules, and love all the models. I got the starter terrain and a number of warbands finished

I also have been quickly painting up some monsterpocalypse and riot quest minis to play with my kids.

I also painted up my first faction for relic blade

So that’s 65 more models and a whole terrain set. I also have a bunch of other projects half finished.
I’ll try to get some better pictures later but that’s all for now

Great stuff, I love that M.O.D.O.K. what a bonkers figure. How have you found the Crisis Protocol plastics to work with?

Big fan of this blog too, you get stuff done!

Marvel stuff looks great. Nice and clean, vivid colors. Missed the newer MonPoc stuff. Love the color scheme for X and Sentinel.

Great work. I just picked up the starter set and Hulk this week and finished assembling them a couple hours ago. Nice vibrant comic book colors you used on them.

Hulk’s skin looks fantastic as well as the color palette you used on M.O.D.O.K.

Painting the marvel stuff was really a lot of fun. It was a nice change to only have to paint one model then completely changing color schemes. The crisis protocol plastics are fine, maybe a little softer than the GW plastic but still good, there were a few issues with some gap filling though especially on Hulk. All of the marvel minis were basecoated with contrast paints and a few highlights and done. I think the contrast paint works well for the vibrant colors. The GUARD mecha color scheme was inspired by gundam . Just realized that i forgot to post some pictures of a few other things i finished, more riot quest, and some more core space miniatures will have to post them tomorrow. That puts me up to 193 models for the year plus the warcry terrain. I definitely should get to 200 for 2019.

I really haven’t had much of a problem with the song of ice and fire miniatures, moldlines seem to be minimal, a quick file and they are ready to go.

Completely agree with this. Some of the earlier sculpts (Stark bowmen especially) were a bit soft but in terms of moldlines they are fine. I have recently got some of the newer sets, such as Neutral Heroes 2 and the Baratheon starter, and they are even better in colour.

Best of luck on the push to 200.
