Looking forward to it, have many a good memory of both games, though a bit puzzled that they included the US general from Red Alert 2 in the trailer.

Apparently they're releasing the source code for both so modders have an easier time of modding.

I wonder if it's going to be something like the Halo collection where they add more to it as time goes on?

For that price? One can dream, but I doubt it. I'd love to have RA2 and Yuri's Revenge again, but only if they put the Hollywood actor voices back in. Still pissed they replaced those voices with generic GI voice lines.

Come on, do Red Alert 2 and Tiberian Sun already! As classic as their predecessors are, those are the golden age for Westwood.

For me Tiberian Sun never lived up to the hype, it also felt a lot slower.

Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge on the other hand, my personal favourites of the franchise. Campy, over the top, just about right.

True, it feels a lot slower, but there are also more options. Red Alert and Tiberian Dawn always felt a bit similar to me (gameplay wise that is) and as a result I mostly only play Red Alert these days on OpenRA. Tiberian Sun really differentiated itself faction wise.

Tiberium Sun had two issues for me

1) The engine wasn't as pretty as it could have been.

2) Nod felt like it didn't get any good "toys" to play with. They were a very micro heavy army with artillery and ticktanks and such and many of their units being fragile. On the other side of the coin the GDI got walking mechs and hover rocket launchers - they felt like they got all the cool and also tough units to play with.

That said it didn't feel like a dropped ball just not a selection of choices I favoured.

The real dropped ball (barring Tib 4) was the expansion for Tiberium 3 which added those mega-sized units. Because when you actually look at the units added, esp the mega sized, several feel REALLY lazily designed. the GDI mega-tank especially just looks ugly. Really big low resolution panels and just nothing like the rest of the units in the game .It felt rushed out.

I picked up the ridiculous $150 collectors edition for this

I've been a huge C&C fan since I was a wee lad in the mid 90's, and the first game in each series were always my favorite, but that's also probably partially nostalgia.

Can't wait to play some on Friday!

The engine was not the prettiest, but the game had a great atmosphere. NOD was indeed a hassle at times, should have kept the Red Alert artillery style and Dawn's light tanks.

C&C3's expansion was pretty bad. The super units were more of the same, just bigger. Wished they kept in bigger maps and more base building though. C&C4 was just a travesty.

I actually own a boxed copy of C&C4...and couldn't make it past the first mission, I just didn't enjoy it. It just wasn't a Command & Conquer game, I have no idea what they were trying to do with it. I have no idea how the story ended, but I'm guessing I didn't miss anything of value

Me too, it kept taunting me from my game cupboard, so now it has been exiled to the bottom shelf of my storage closet.

It honestly felt like an attempt at a weird E-sport.

Kane activates Scrin tower and he and his followers ascend/transcend/disappear of the earth. Why? What motivation or end goal? Who the feth knows.

CnC 4 from what I gather was never meant to be it. It was a side game being made by a studio as a totally different franchise game for a totally different market. EA for some reason poached it and slapped CnC 4 on the title and made them rework some bits into the game and released it en-mass. Basically I get the feeling that they needed/wanted a fast cash-cow for some quick money with minimal investment and took a punt.

It doesn't help that it was a total failure. Following that they went for the whole "lets make an MMO RTS" game which failed during testing (the Rise of Legends team also went this path and also died with the project never making it far).

Following that CnC was dead and RTS fell to the side. That said its got room to grow - if 4* games can grow big and they are even more "geeky/slow/tactical" then RTS certainly can come back. It's just a hard thing for indie/smaller studios to develop - esp for the AI elements. It needs a bigger studio to really get off the ground.

Honestly, I think what has me most excited about this in terms of actual play (aside from UI/control updates) is Skirmish for C&C1, I've been wanting that ever since RA came out and had it

C&C3 and RA3 both killed off my love for the franchise, RA3 in particular trimmed things down way too much, plus it felt like it focused more on the massive cast of actors, athletes and models than on the actual gameplay.

Skirmish in C&C would be fun, it was certainly a game mode I played a lot with the original Red Alert and its sequel.

I liked the overall factions of RA3, but I didn't like how they went micro heavy with most units (they did stagger it somewhat - soviets were low; Aliled medium and Asia was very high on micro)having to swap between two modes.

Thing that annoyed me was the map design - very small maps; very limited resources. Heck most times you could hardly find enough to tech up and build up - it was built around very fast very brutal fights with very little base building beyond what you needed. To me it was making the RTS experience more and more "efficient" and somewhere along the way they lost some (not all) of the fun

IIRC, maps were also made with coop in mind, saddling you with a rather useless AI ally.

Can't even remember any of the tracks from the OST, that's how forgettable it was for me. I know Frank did a heavy metal soundtrack for the game and a remix of the Hellmarch, but I can't remember even one of them. Pretty dire, as I still listen to the OSTs of most games of Westwood, including Tiberian Sun and Emperor - Battle for Dune from time to time.

I liked the asian intro music to the game that came with the RA3 expansion. The Hellmarch was also good.

All I remember from RA3 is George Takei and that the story was a convoluted mess, when you retcon how Red Alert happened, you can't just pretend it happened anyway.

I actually really enjoyed RA3, but I'm not the best one to judge as it's the only one I've played much of. The only other Command & Conquer game I've played at all was the original one, but on the N64, believe it or not. The N64 was also the first place I played StarCraft.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

CnC3 (particularly with Kane's Wrath) was the best of the series IMO, just in terms of pure gameplay. But I enjoyed all of htem, including the much-maligned 4.

I've enjoyed all of the games in the franchise that I've played (which is all of them except 4), including the Renegade fps. Special mention, though, goes to RA3, with the Japanese units ("Mecha-tengu! Let's go!"), and Generals.

I hope there's a compatible unit editor out there. Had so much fun changing the weapons of things back in the day.

Give Allied Medium tanks the missiles that MIGs have. Give them a flametower gun as their secondary. Best unit in the game.

Or give nukes to Minigunners. That was hilarious.

Or allowing you to build explosive barrels so you could cover the map with them and then set it off in a glorious chain reaction.

They're releasing the source code to the game, so I'm sure someone will come up with something.

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2020/05/21/ea-will-release-the-full-command-conquer-remastered-source-code-at-launch/#more-836043

When Command & Conquer: Remastered Collection launches next month, it’ll arrive with a lovely little gift for the modding community. This week, EA announced that some of the source code for both Command & Conquer and Red Alert will be freely accessible at launch, giving modders the groundwork to go wild creating whatever they’d like – up to and including giant tanks that punt nukes out of their big ol’ guns.

Note that C&C isn't the only EA product that's been moved to Steam. Several older titiles - including the second and third Dragon Age games, and Mirror's Edge Catalyst - are now available on Steam, as well (and heavily marked down at the moment). EA All Access is supposed to be coming soon, too.

Origin is going bye-bye, it looks like. I suppose that I should check on what kind of effect this will have on the MEC purchase I made on Origin quite a while back.

I don't know if they are getting rid of Origin or just consolidating back to Steam.

Considering the backlash Epic has had against them by "steam loyalists" even if only a portion are all mouth no action (ergo they mouth off but use Epic any way); then perhaps EA is thinking that they'll have a slice of that die-hard fanatical market who won't use Origin. It imght also be that conflicts between EA and Valve as to terms and conditions of trade have been resolved.

Heck maybe EA just wants to get on Steam so that Epic picks up the metrics on EA games through Steam and wants to give EA some of those sweet exclusivity golden handshakes

On moon miranda.

Loaded and booted it up, haven't had a chance to actually play, but looked through the options and whatnot, I'll be trying it later tonight, but I'm impressed so far. The fact that they got the same woman to revoice EVA is amazing.

Was amused they still had the Westwood intro, and the 1995 EA logo on the launcher

EDIT: finally got to play it, got in and loaded up a Skirmish game for the original (only took 25 years to make that feature happen ). The ability to tab between the classic visuals and updated visual just by hitting spacebar is cool ableit largely pointless (but I'm glad it's there either way!). The updated control scheme is awesome, as is the ability to actually queue units for production. The awful individual unit AI and pathfinding remains the same (harvesters will approach from opposite sides of a bridge, block each other, and sit unless manually moved, units told to engage a target will often continue moving forward even once well within range and expose themselves to fire or just won't fire sometimes, etc), the updated visuals aren't anything particularly compelling next to most modern games but are a fantastic update of the original. The economy remains a little wacko and painfully slow at the start. Overall, it's pretty much exactly what was promised, a graphically updated port of the original with a modern control scheme and some extra features & music that otherwise remains identical to what people played in 1995.

TIL that general Carville, the RA2 general, actually also featured in one of the Red Alert expansions, featuring ants.

Still, the footage they used of him is from RA2 IIRC.

So far.. nice. The new graphics are a mix of nice homages and cartoony art, but getting to revisit the same old stuff (annoying AI et al) from all those year ago again.. so good.
