Ok I may buy the necron codex or not, but if I do I want to know about the digital rules set that comes with it. Does it need the app to use it and do i have to pay a monthly fee to access it then? I'm not interested in the app from what I've heard of it. The overwhelming reviews were 1 star, and a few were 2 star, after looking thru a few dozen i did not see a higher review. Many reviews said the free parts were worthless, the layout was crude and the unsubscribe function was literally hidden.
Also is the digital rules you get something you can download and read offline?

Yes you need the app.
My understanding is that the app will display codexes you've bought and registered the code for without any additional payment. Paying will give you all the rules, codexes etc as they are released.
Please correct me if I've got that wrong folks.

This is correct. The only way to have official digital rules right now is by downloading the app and redeeming the code found in a book.
In addition, you can pay for a subscription to get additional benefits. Which you might or might not be find worth the money it costs.

So, by subscribing you get the rules, as if you had used a code from a physical book, but without having to buy the book?

You currently get the 8th edition rules, but they will disappear as new books are released. For example if you subscribe right now, you will get the 8th Edition Space marine rules. These will completely disappear on Saturday when the codex is released and you will no longer have access to 8th edition or 9th space marines unless you enter the corresponding code.

Space marines is a little complicated. When the 9th codex is released, support for the 8th codex will be dropped. The existing space marine codex supplements will still be on the app.
It’s very frustrating if you want digital rules actually. If you buy the 9th codex you can put the code into the app and get the digital rules without paying the subscription, but to get the codex supplement rules you need to subscribe. For the non-codex chapters they’ll get their 9th Ed supplement so should be able to get that in the app without a subscription, but no such luck with the rest of chapters.

A summary:
Free version gets you:
- The core rules only (same as the free PDF - so none of the big Core book extras such as missions, Crusade rules etc)
- rules from 9th ed Codexes as and when you use the codes from physical codes (but not lore, picture section etc)
- search function
Subscriber version gets you:
- 8th ed Codexes, until they are replaced by 9th ed versions
- army builder that doesn't yet exist
- a strange, distant feeling of regret

i shoudn't bother with the app if i where you. I wanted it to be good, i subscribed the moment it launched, and unsubscribed a month ago. the biggest problems i found where:
-the app crashes when you type to fast in the search field
-you have to remember the exact name of a stratagem to find it. Most of the time i know the effect of a strata and want to check something specific, but the names, who knows them..
-you still need the book because you have no acces to missions!!
It should have replaced the rulebook and codex pile, but it doesn't. you still need a rulebook for the missions. Your search during a game is much faster in the book than the app because of the crashes and exact wording. example--> "the I get cover everywhere first turn strata, was it one or 2 cp", how was it named again? cover? positional advantage? dug in? see where i'm going with this?

The app is still a total disaster, with no real knowing whether it's going to ever become something other than a disaster. It may become something good, but it may not, and the omens aren't particularly good given how completely GW has dropped it off the radar lately. We were supposed to have a full army builder in July, it's now October and it's still "soon."
If the digital rule are important to you, I'd wait a few days till people start redeeming their codes and you can see how it actually works, it should be obvious very quickly whether the digital versions of the 9th edition codexes are a real product or a sad joke.

You get the rules, but not the actual codex.
Unless that changes if you are subscriber. I have the free version, with the code redeemed for both SM and Necrons. Only rules, no digital version of the codex.

I work in IT. I can comfortably say that, while GW do need to explain the app better (even just having the info in one place would be acceptable) - it will not stop the questions.

oh, i agree, people will always ask questions, especially before handing over cash. That, and the levels of IT illiteracy among the general public are truly shocking, given the sheer amount of computer technology in everyday life these days, which leads to a lot of the Dunning-Kruger effect issues where people think a task should be easy to do (like, say, fix this app), but the actual difficulty might be much greater than they believe (ie trawling though hundreds of lines of code for a non obvious interaction that is causing the problem).

Gee, yall having troubles accessing the digital content GW promised to you?
Seems like my "boycotting" campaing of buying 9th ed books used and making epub out of them myself turned out to be the best course of action I could have taken. My epub files have all the missions etc, easily searchable, with full index
I can only hope GW gives up on the app soon and goes back to offering ebooks for 40K like they offer for all their other game systems. That app is just terrible and is not a real replacement for the ebook versions.

If only we were legally allowed to give you money to access them.
If only there was a company out there with the rights to the IP, that could somehow set up some sort of facility to allow people to buy the PDFs.

Has anyone tried accessing the same app account from multiple devices simultaneously? I'm thinking of making a single account for the playgroup and having all codices we buy added to that one account so we can all reference them. Just want to make sure that's doable.
Also, despite all you doom and gloomers, this app has real potential. It's certainly not worth the $5/mo yet, but once they get their issues straightened and implement additional capabilities, I see it becoming worth it. If Crusade OoBs and content is added to the future List Builder, that would help immensely. Being able to split the cost across multiple people for a single account will also help. So I have hope for the future.

Its not the potential people are dismissing, it's the implementation. Most of us like the searchable ebooks, and only needing one device to check multiple books. This aint it. Nor do I have a lot of expectation for improvement. GW has tried to do list building software numerous times over the years. There was a CD program for sale in the stores, there was some sort of thing in the back of one of my ebooks. GW wants to do it, they just don't want to put enough effort and work in to do it right.
