JOHN BLANCHE'S EN GARDE
Now that the Trench Crusade rulebook is safely in the hands of the production crew, it seems like a good moment to talk about a little project I have been working on in my spare time. I would like to introduce you to the world of John Blanche’s En Garde.
About a year ago, after his retirement from GW, John summoned me over to discuss an idea he had for a game. It was something he had been thinking about and planning for years. He revealed to me a wondrous stack of illustrations of warriors drawn in his inimitable and iconic style. He wanted to create a game of fast and furious fantasy duels in 54mm scale. One model per side. Brilliant. There was no way I was going to pass up this opportunity, or let anyone else make this game. Myself and John haven’t worked together on a project for over 20 years. The stars aligned and this felt like the right time to reunite.
Imagine then if you will, a city upon water where the greatest duellists of the age engage in sanctioned swordfights. In the alleys and half-submerged palaces you will find a vampiric aristocrat crossing swords with the most ferocious buccaneer captain or a refined master fencer from the far east. Here epee meets the sabre and cutlass clashes with a rapier. Here your quick wits, sharp reflexes and bright steel determine who lives and who dies.
As a quick teaser, here are some glimpse of the models made for the game as well as some of John’s character design work. As for myself, I’ve been wrestling with the age-old design dilemma of how to make one on one duels on tabletop exciting, varied and replayable. And I can’t wait to reveal how I’ve cracked it.
More news on John Blanche’s En Garde later this year. Once more unto the breach, old friend.

Somehow this concept makes me think of the Napoleonic Wars movie, "The Duellists".

The secret to painting a really big army is to keep at it. You can't reach your destination if you never take any steps.

I build IG...lots and lots of IG.

I love what I see so far for the minis!

Spoiler:

The minis look good and the paint jobs are gorgeous, but I really want to know anything about the rules. I've got plenty of 54mm figs of my own, would love some rules to knock them around.

So... Genuine question...

If this didn't have John Blanches name attached to it, would anyone be giving it a second look?

The minis are pretty mediocre (the paint jobs are doing a lot of heavy lifting), there's better stuff out there at this scale (far better)...

No Blanche but still had Tuomas' association? Probably.

Neither of them on it would mean that it would have to be a REALLY good game to rise above. As it is, it isn't like it has done that great of a job of getting the word out. Even Trench Crusade diehards locally have no idea about it.

HERESY!

I mean uh, that is a fair question but can it really be answered? Would anyone watch a documentary on Grim Dark games without Blanche's name attached? The point is Blanche's name is attached. Even without a game, a chance to see and paint his unique artistic visions realized in 3D, and knowing the proceeds go to him and not GW stockholders is an appeal.

Is there other 54mm stuff out there? I know the world of 3d printing is infinite, and I see display models all the time but actual products you can buy?

But to really answer the question on the models, I'd like to see them unpainted and unassembled. There's references to converting/customizing and I'd like to see that. If these are kits with compatible bits and extra arms/heads/etc the appeal goes up for me. It they're just set and hard/impossible to convert it may go down to zero. That was always my issue with Inquisitor.

Dunno if the game itself will be the selling point. But the models? Those I think absolutely are.

The Vampire Lord looks great, as a long time fan of Inquisitor I'm locked in from that model alone.
The lore and rules at least sound interesting so far.

Found an interview with a general overview of the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSLWDRZWXSI

Uhhhh... yes. Many 54mm historical ranges are available, and have been for decades. It's a popular historical scale.

3 Minis are a hit for me, the 'I'm an anteater' pirate is not.

Just looking forward to more 54mm models to add to my 54mm Inquisitor collection.

I'll probably go in for rules and figures. They look interesting and different enough to be tempting. They look very much like his Scions of Voodoo characters, which I'd be interested to see figures for.

If there's one thing Pirinen and Blanche understand it is the importance of SEX APPEAL in a new game.
Spoiler:

Meet the next duellist, the deadly vampire Mi’lady Carmilla! Painted by Grimdark Compendium, sculpted by Paul Hicks!

GUARDIANESS OF THE DEEPS Mi’lady Carmilla
“You bleat of my beauty as if it was a bauble you can possess with your cloying words. You would risk the protection of my beloved city for the sake of your ego and lust? For this insult I will unleash upon you the full terror of the Night! EN GARDE!”

Height: 6’ Age: 143 years
Weight: 160 lbs Favourite weapon: Rapier and wheellock pistol

For many centuries creatures known as the Drowned Ones have plagued Therae. Infiltrating the cisterns and lower levels through waterlogged tunnels of the city, they have abducted countless unwary youths and maidens to their doom, injected with parasites that keep them alive underneath the waves and dragged into the horrid cities under the waves to become ritual sacrifices, food consumed alive, or worse. Over the centuries this threat has grown ever greater, despite the efforts of the City Watch, who are no match for these monstrous creatures of the deep.

In the year 1645, seven mighty warriors of Therae who had dedicated their lives to the defense of their home city against this seaborne menace took a fateful decision to drink from the Cup of Sorrows. This relic is held in the great catheredral of St. Maurius. This cup is said to hold the blood of the last vampire slain by the founder of the city, and drinking from it has been strictly forbidden by both the Doge and the Arch-priest.

Despite the ban, and out of a sense of duty and for the love of their city, the seven cast aside their mortal lives in order to forever defend their people. Despite being doomed to live apart from their own kin forever and cursed to thirst for human blood, none hesitated. Claimed by ghastly power of undeath they became one of the undying Myrmidons and to this day they hold their eternal vigil in the crypts and catacombs that overlook the entrances to the city’s lagoon. Their prowess was greatly enhanced: strong, tireless and possessed with strange powers the city had gained formidable undying vampiric guardians.

The swords of the seven soon made the nights of the city much safer, and their legend reached far and wide. Amongst the seven, none are as deeply revered as Mi’lady Carmilla. On the rare occasions when she emerges from the dark corridors beneath the city, citizens flock to her, willingly offering her cups of their blood as nourishment, grateful for all the lives she has saved.

But not all approach her with gratitude. Others seek her out, lured by the tales of her cold beauty, hoping to win Mi’Lady’s unbeating heart with bravado and swagger. Others hope to make a name of themselves by challenging her to a duel and defeating her to gain great fame and wealth from the priceless jewllery her grateful wards have bestowed upon her.

Little do they know that Mi’lady has no time for fools and waxes most wrathful when her duties are disturbed. On such occasions she recites the words of duelling challenge and descends upon her hapless opponent like one of the furies of legend. Those whose unwanted overtures Mi'Lady finds particularly uncouth she reserves the terrible punishment of the Slaveblood, a bizarre and ill understood excruciation whereby the victim is rendered into a lesser form of undeath, receiving only the vilest traits of living death.

Mi’Lady is master of both the rapier and wheellock pistol, and possesses many strange powers: her mere gaze can gain control over weaker minds, she can dissolve into blood-red mist to avoid enemy blows, and if she is seriously challenged she will remove her mask and bring her vampiric fangs to play. One taste of blood will unleash her dreaded Blood Fury, a berserk trance enhancing her already supernatural speed and strength. Few have seen Mi’Lady in her true majesty and savage beauty and lived to tell the tale.

Next character revealed:
Spoiler:

LURKER OF THE DARK -Van Ryn

“I offer you a choice: kneel before my Mistress and live, or die and face eternal darkness. For you have been lied to: there is no Kingdom of Light, only the black shadow of the grave.”
-Van Ryn

Height: 5’ 10” Age: 66
Weight: 166 lbs Favourite weapons: Estoc, pistol, dagger

He goes by many names: The Chosen of Vepair, the Lurker in the Dark, the Devil Duellist, the Soul Thief, and many more, equally dark sobriquets. There are just as many dark takes about him; that he only ever duels after the sun has set, or that if you bury some dirt from a grave at crossroads Van Ryn will come and hear your proposition in seven days.

No two tales about him agree with each other, except one: many years ago Van Ryn was a great noble sea lord, commanding his legendary warship, Horn of Plenty, as he exacted tolls and duties from the use of the sea lanes under the rule of his lordly house. He grew rich and proud beyond measure, demanding ever higher fees even from the poor and the pilgrims normally excluded from such tithes. But his luck turned one day when his ship was caught in a ferocious storm that suddenly broke despite clear skies and dead calm seas. The high winds, lightning and great tidal waves took the crew of the ship one by one, until only Van Ryn remained, lashed to the wheel of the ship. As the ship began to break apart and the sea was about to swallow the proud lord, Vepair, the great duchess of Hell, appeared before Van Ryn, promising salvation: by denouncing the lords of light and becoming the champion of Vepair, his life would be spared. Van Ryn chose to save his life and doom his soul.

Afterwards, Horn of Plenty sailed to the harbour of Therae without any visible crew. From that day on Van Ryn has fought in every Season of Duels, and he has become one of its most feared combatants. The Lurker in the Dark never reveals his face, and keeps it hidden behind a silk scarf. His snow-white long hair hints at his great age, and yet he moves and fights with the speed and strength of a youth athlete in his prime. Van Ryn wears a magnificent red coat trimmed with glittering gold, said to have been a boon given to him by the demon Vepair. Some even whisper that his outrageously heeled boots hide two cloven hooves, which allow him to perform extraordinary feats of athleticism bordering on supernatural.

The Cathedral has denounced Van Ryn as the very worst of heretics, to be executed on sight. The Paragons of Therae are ever-vigilant in their zealous search for Van Ryn, but this far their best efforts have been frustrated time and again. Each year Van Ryn avoids their roadblocks and patrols, and he has strolled his way to the Field of Honour and inscribed his name upon the Scroll of Duellists with the letters of fire. Fearing the prophecy, authorities are forced to honour the terms of duelling, and Van Ryn gains yet another year of blood and cruelty.

As a duellist he is then free to bring the terror of his blades upon whomever he chooses. Van Ryn only fights at night, and it is said his eyes are keen as those of a cat even at the darkest hours. To counter his vision which seems to be unaffected by the dark, many warriors who wish to confront Devil’s Blade create arenas encircled by candles, torches and lamps -though Van Ryn seems to enjoy their eerie light as much as the dark.

When Van Ryn gains the upper hand in a duel, he presents his opponents with a choice: either live and fight another day, or die by the edge of his sword, the Excruciator. The catch is that in order to be shown mercy one must denounce the gods of light and promise to serve the Dark Mistress Vepair from that day onwards, both in this world and the next. Most choose life and live to regret their choice. Vepair serves the Chaos Spirit, the eternal foe of Cosmic Balance, and her slaves invariably come to an evil end.

The kick starter is coming in a few days.

I for one am disappointed that they're hyping it with images of half-naked warriors in the Boris Vallejo style, I know sex sells but I think this game doesn't need that kind of tawdry images.

One thing I have noticed is the general lack of armor on any of the models shown. I guess the duelists aren't allowed/don't wear armor?
