Missionary On A Mission

Hello,

I am planning on Making a Genestealer Swarm (50+ genestealers) and I will have some extra warriors from the box sets.  Does anyone know of easy/simple conversions of Tyranid Warriors to Raveners.  I have little to no modeling experience.  Thanks for the help!

I did this with the warriors from my battleforce, and they look great. I made mine in the middle of deep-striking, so i didnt have to build the tails. Mine are built with rending claws and scything talons, and holes in the chest to represent thorax weapons. Basically, think of a way to have the ravener emerging from a hole (i have one coming from a sewer pipe, one from a rockpool and one bursting from a tunnell). How you do this is up to you.

The parts used are a warrior body, legs and head, warrior large talons, genestealer scything talons, genestealer rending claws and toothpicks. You will also need a pin vice and some suitably thin wire (like a paperclip) and something to cut it with.

The warrior head has cut-off genestealer Rending Claw finger/claws attached to either side to make the claw-like mandibles on the sides of the raveners head. A little bit of greenstuff will help smooth it in. Check out images of the metal raveners for a guide how to model these (You should only need to waste one pair of rending claws for making these, one pair = 6 fingers = 3 pair of mandibles).
I mounted the arms- Top:- Warrior scything talons, Middle:- Genestealer rending claws, Bottom:- Genestealer scything talons.
I cut the 2 small claw bits off the lower-back of the warrior legs, and glued them to the underneath of the Warrior scything talon forearm (you can see these in pic 2 on the top left talon).
The rending claws are useful in selling the ravener pulling itself out of a hole, digging through rock, etc.
The body can be modeled protruding from your chosen cavity by clipping off the tail flat to the base and pinning it on, just do it so that it looks like it's coming out of something and not just straight out of the ground. Das modeling clay is useful to make a crater or some such thing if you don't want to waste greenstuff.
I modeled 3 spines down its back by drilling a pin (drilling a hole and inserting a piece of wire) as a base, and sculpting greenstuff over it.

Other extra details I added are small spines running down the upper part of the tail where the body ends (3 on the left, 3 right and 3 front). These were built by drilling out a hole the same size as the diameter of a toothpick, and cutting off the sharp ends of toothpicks and glueing them in place. Once again, use photos of the metal models as reference as to how they should look.

Final detail I added was to drill some holes in the chest to represent the thorax mounted weapon (which is optional). I put about 10 holes between the 'ribs' to look like spinefist weapons.
On mine i greenstuffed over the eyes to make it look blind, but that is just a matter of taste

Not difficult conversions. If you wanted all scything talons, probably use hormagaunt scything talons for middle claws.

that's a sneaky idea to avoid modelling the tails. I too would like to convert some plastic Raveners and may steal the idea - I don't think my greenstuff skills are good enough to sculpt a decent tail...

I'm in the same boat of needing something to do with my spare warriors, so I've ordered a few Tyrant Tails. At £2 each, they're not worth it if you're looking for cheap Raveners, but if you've got spare warriors, it's not so bad. Certainly working out cheaper overall to use two Battleforces as 2*fex, 3*Zoey, 3*Ravener, 16*Spinegaunt, 16*Stealer, and 16*Devourer-gaunt (having myself some jumping spinegaunts, using Devs on the termies)
