There have been a couple of times when this has come up at the shop and I need an answer.    A librarian is near close combat and some other enemy units.   Its the SM's turn and he decides to use the Fear of Darkness ability affecting all within 12 inches with a lovely -2 leadership check.  Logically this skill would affect the enemy units nearby, but what about those enemy units engaged in close combat?

Also, if the librarian Fear of Darkness could break an assault (by causing the enemies to flee after a failed leadership) would the newly freed group then be able to fire?

If so, would they fire as if they had already moved?
Could the team enter into an assault?

We have simply said that the psychic power doesn't work on assaults, however I personally feel that this is wrong as the rules seem to clarify that ALL units suffer an immediate leadership check at -2.

The Fear of the Darkness rules entry answers your question quite nicely...
