ABC is of course Atomic, Biological, Chemical weapons aka Rad Grenades, Virus Grenades and Toxin Grenades. Oh and vortex too. These of course will be wargear items in my Ordo Xenos codex with I'll probably never write. But anyway... Exterminator Teams (Ordo Xenos Elite available with OX Inquisitor to any Imperial army) Storm Troops with normal options plus the mortar and Rad, Virus and Tox grenades as upgrades. They'd be in full NBC suits which would probably look a but more like 19th century diving suits. The 3 grenade types can all be fired from a GL or mortar, they cannot be thrown. Inquisitors wtih a combi-bolter-GL can also buy them as wargear. Toxin Grenades (25 points) Large template, wounds on 4+, normal armor saves. Rad Grenades (40 points) Large template, S4, AP3 Virus Grenades (50 points) Large template, wounds on 4+, normal armor saves. When a model is killed lay it on its side. Any model within 3" of a slain model (even if not wounded the first time) is wounded on 5+, normal armor save. The secondary infections do not spread further. And of course Vortex Grenade (50 points) Available to Inquisitors, thrown, works as guess 12" Small template. Any model touching it dies. Any vehicle takes a penetrating hit. There you go. Comments?

I really liked the way the old vortex grenade template would stay on the battlefield and move around randomly...that was the best part of it IMHO.
Sort of like the old Goblin Fanatics (maybe they still do that, I haven't played Fantasy since 3rd ed.)
In general, I like the way that these options actually make Mortars and Grenade Launchers worthwhile, even at the exorbitant cost for the shells!

Imagine an IG army of mortar doom, equipted with rad grenades. Smells like victory.

It would be fun to make the Rad templates stay on the table; say, anyone wandering over it takes a wound on a 6, no armour save. Unless you've got an NBC suit, like the elite stormies - then you're immune!
But maybe my guardsmen are just jealous of the Smurfs' Castellan minefields of hit-you-but-can't-hurt-me.

I tried to avoid having things linger on the table, I have bad, bad, VERY BAD memories of the 2nd edition 'blind grenade phase' where we'd spend a half hour rolling for blind grenade clouds before we could get on with the damn game.
Plus a weapon that keeps on killing is hard to balance. If I did it it would be like Strange Looper's idea, only wounding on 6. Enough to deter but not overwhelming.
For Rad grenades I went on the theory that Termi armor (and its ilk) would be pretty much rad proof. To tell the truth power armor should be but everyone hates marines so I made it AP3.

You could make the Rad grenades AP 4/5, but AP3 if under the circle of the template. I loved the randomness of the old RT-era rad grenades, as they could be as small as 1" diameter to the monster 4" template (IIRC). Kinda hard to do these days. Still, I do like how you standardized the munitions.
I also like how you've taken into consideration marines (both loyalist & chaos), Eldar, Tau, Necron, Stormtrooper and other similar units in sealed armor through the simple dint of armor saves. Perhaps those in sealed suits could get an added +1 save bonus? This would make Terminators and other heavy armor suits invulnerable, and most MEq's nigh invulnerable, which is as it should be when dealing with bio and chem agents. Go figure, but I'd like to see such things be more widespread, with marines, Orks (!!!), and Eldar having access as well. (One day I'll get around to clarifying & simplyfing the RT ruleset, which is still my favorite)

Hmmm - you can always rip off the Castellan wording for remains-in-play effects...

Perhaps those in sealed suits could get an added +1 save bonus? Someone else suggested it a long time ago and like it. Armor saves can be shorthand for all protection, including the odds a model had a gas mask/wet handcherchief/anti-body shot/whatever. A bonus to the save is an interesting idea. I might go with a +1 to saves for toxin grenades, no bous to virus and drop the secondary infection (which is a bit too complicated for these rules).

Nah, keep the secondary infection, it's the very character of virus bombs. Just remove casualties once all secondary infections have been determined rather than having it remain in play.
