Question, is a difficult terrain test forced in this situation? C's are a cav unit, able to charge 12". B's are some form of difficult terrain, a boulder or something perhaps. S's are Squaddies. Now, according to the rules, you must charge closest to closest models using the shortest route, does this mean that a difficult terrain test is forced. Assuming you roll too low, you wont even make it to the squad in the first place, even though you can easily make it to the other members withing cav charging distance.

I wouldn't force you to take the difficult terrain check. That simple

By RAW the difficult terrain test is forced, your guys were just too cautious if they fail. I would make you test, and recommend you line up for a better charge next time.

The RAW does state that a test is required. How you and your opponent chose to deal with the situation is something else entirely.

Threads should be like skirts: long enough to cover what's important but short enough to keep it interesting.

Thats a definate test. If the scale in your example is any indicator, the only models you would have range to charge are directly behind the obstacle. Your men won't simply skirt around it even if they have the movement to do so if they can go through it.

If the obstacle was a big rock, like your example, it's possible that it could have been considered impassible terrain, in which case your troops would skirt around it.

You might get a more in depth response in a forum designed to debate exsisting rules, such as YMTC, over one for proposing new ones.

Unless, ofcourse, you're here to preach your distaste for GW's idiotic quest for world domination one bad rule at a time, in which case, you've come to the right place.
