At Adepticon in Chicago (the largest 40k tournament in the nation) there is a tournament called the Gladiator. Here are the rules:

No comp., limited sports.

Super Heavies take 2 HS slots

Objective based missions.

2000 points.

Here is the question, no trying to delve into what people who are attending are bringing, with no comp, 2000 points and unlimited reasources, what would your Gladiator list be?

Zilla shooty nids, lots of little bugs, no question.

Baring that, Drop Pod Marines, although by now most people will have developed effective counter strategies to the pod. (and if they haven't, they should before they hit the tourny)

I was thinking about a 4 librarian Space marine army.

how do you get 4 librarians? you can only take 1 per hq slot (still only 1 even though you can take the other two chars in the slot too)

How about berzerkers

1 thirster, 1 lord, and the forgeworld thirster + some marines and some bikes.  Just dont let your two hosts get killed off.

2 Command Squads lead by a Librarian and attached with a Librarian. You can't take the same type, meaning you can take an Epistolary Librarian and attach a Codicer Librarian.

Would make a cool Blood Ravens Army.

yes, i was under the impersion that you could only have a max of 2 librarians, but i suppose that you could read the passage that way, although I doubt that that was what was intended.

4 fears a turn? good lord. any non fearless army would run off the board.

that's worse than dropping tigerius in the middle of the board and having a 24" fear.

But not as bad as dropping TWO Tigurius' into the middle of the board and fearing 24", right?  Does gladiator allow that?  Would be a good army against anything that isn't fearless, but shouldn't make it too far against all-comers.

I don't have the Taros Campaign book, but will a Tau player be able to field a manta in the gladiator?

Since super heavies count as 2 Heavy Support choices, can an Iron Warriors army take two titans?  That would rock.  Looks like minimum points cost for a Chaos Warhound Titan is 810 points, so two titans would totally fit under 2000 points with an HQ and 2 Troops.  That's what I would take right there.

Where is that?

PG. 21 Codex: Space Marines

"3. Librarians and Chaplains may be attached to another character's command squad. Only one character of a given type may be attached to a single command squad. The attached character is a member of the unit and may not leave it. If the unit is distroyed the attached character and leading character may operate independently."

If a Librarian takes a command squad, it can have an additional Librarian attached to it. I always interpreted it as you can't have two epistolaries in the same squad because they are the same type, but according to this, I may be wrong. However, having two Epistolarys in a command squad may be too many points, and you really only want the second Fear anyways.

Only one character of a given type may be 'attached.'

You just can't 'attach' two Epistolaries. You can still have an epistolary and an attached epistolary. According to that quote anyway.

yea, but Epistolary and Codicer are both of type Librarian.
You would have a hard time of convincing judges otherwise

No. You may take an HQ, then a command squad, and then attach one librarian and/or one chaplain. You cannot take a HQ, command squad, then attach two more librarians/chaplains.

And you never take a codicer. For 15 points the wound alone makes it a no brainer, but the point of LD (which means you pass that extra psychic test) is just gravy.

Interesting. I always read it that the characters were classified as a different type based on what they are (Epistolary and Codicer for example). A lot of others read it that way as well. So in essence by the way it reads, you could take a Librarian command squad, add another epistolary, then add a Master of sanctity. Then you could for your second HQ choice take another Librarian command squad and take the same load out again...for a total of six 3 wound characters? That doesn't seem right does it? Not like you'd ever see that in a game anyways, but that seems odd.

You will never see it because 2 command squads like that in Drop Pods will run you 1000 points, easy without lavish upgrades.

Anyways, back to the subject at hand, I will still probably go with a Chaos Deamonbomb, though we will have to see how Eldar fair in there new codex.

I believe it has been done, except with Madboyz (which can actually kill things) replacing the grots.

I think you have quite a few points left to spend on that list.

I used to run my army like that and it is grabage, you lose the infiltrators roll and you end up deploying in your own deployment zone. a bunch of points wasted.

However, when you won the roll, it was pretty dang useful.

you are far better off taking drop pods, it costs the same points for a 10 man squad as well.

Why replace the grotz with madboyz? That's 180 invulnerable saves for the gargantuan squiggoths!

yea, but those squiggoths only have so many wounds. and with everything moving 6 in a turn your long range firepower gets 4 turns of shooting them, then you can charge the grots. Any devistator heavy army will crush the squigoths.

Infiltration isn't about deploying your army all over the board - it is about deploying *last*.

The problem I have with Infiltrator heavy armies is that Infiltration is not garunteed. Sure in most friendly games it is, but in tournaments you are looking at 60% of your games at least where that ability is wasted.

I think you're missing half the point.  That's 180 models to move.  Four turns of shooting?  Hah!   I reckon there's 2 turns of play with that many models, tops.

Not that I'm going, but I'd like to try the all-drop trooper Afriel strain list.

Abhumans
Afriel Strain
Drop Troopers
COD
and either Veterans or Special Weapon squads.

ATSKNF, 2 melta and demo charge squads or 3 triple-melta vet squads, quad-plasma command squads, lascannon/plasma troop squads. I'm sure you could get about 200 bodies into 2000 points. It would be hard for anyone to kill that many bodies in 3-4 turns (or less, depending on how long it takes to deploy on the drop turn!) The only problem might be finding enough space to land...

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling, which thinks that nothing is worth war, is much worse. The person, who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."
