I'm getting ready to play in an escalation league with four other players.  I'm looking at facing off against IG, SM, genestealer heavy tyranids, and necrons.  I think AC can do really well against the necrons, tyranids, and IG.  My real question is in building my initial 500 pt. army.  The first four weeks of gaming are at 500 pts. and include no model with more than 2 wounds, and no armor with greater than 33 armor all around.  You also do not have to abide by the normal requisition requirements.  So you don't need to take an HQ and 2 troops choices in the 500 pt. games  That being said I still feel that this really limits me initially.  My idea goes something like this.

All Fast Attack

2 armored fist squads with las cannon, plasmagun in chimera with multi laser/heavy bolter

3 sentinels w'heavy flamers

When we move up to 1000 pts. and normal requisition requirments those armored fists are going to go the way of the buffalo but I can't think of a good alternative for them here.  Maybe Storm troopers but they have to be mounted as well and eat up more points without the benefit of picking up a heavy weapon.

I think I'd like to fit the sentinels in though.

If there are any veteran AC players out there your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

At 500 points I think you need to consider what you are playing against.  Consider the number of shots you will need to take our a bunch of Nids or the bounce back phase thing that Necrons do.

Auto Cannons are good, but if you are going to run an Armored Fist unit I like the Las Cannon option for a heavy weapons crew.

I also usually have one of the 3 choices in my Armored Fist squads, Melta gun, plasma gun or flamer.  Gernade Launchers are not any good against vehicles, but will drive a nids player crazy if you can hit.  Other than that go with the other choices.

Chimera weapons can come into play as well, Multi Laser is always a good choice.  Some people like the Auto cannon version if you can get the parts.  I like the hull mounted Heavy bolter as well.

With a Armored fist unit the number of shots is important.

When you move up to 1000, you can still use one of these as a troop choice, but the other needs to be a platoon HQ with two squads.

If you want elite units go with Veterans as they get an addition assult weapon (3 instead of 2).  Storm troopers are good, but I like them for infiltrate or deep strike units.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply.  In an armored company list armored fist squads are fast attack options and the only troop choices are lemun russ' or destroyer tank hunters.  At 1000 points I don't think I can squeeze in an armored fist squad.  I'd much rather keep the sentinels and run 2 russ' with a vanquiser command tank.

My real problem is fielding a competitive force at the 500 points level.  I think my two armored fist squads don't have enough bite.

Uh, you do know about that Necron gauss thing right.  Every single one of the models that shoot can take down anything with an armour value.  I play Necrons and have yet to lose to AC.  You can't phase out a decent Necron army by turn three and by turn three most of the warriors will be in rapid fire range.

Necrons pwn AC pure and simple.

You are right that necrons reak havok upon armor, and when I play against my best friend, who has a massive amount of necrons, with my SM force I drop armor for devistators.  But I think that dropping a ton of str.8, ap 3 ordinance denies necrons their save, and more importantly theie "We'll be back" rolls.  The only things they can hit you with at a distance are destroyers, and they would be my first target.

I don't know.  It would at least be fun trying it out.  Fighting against necrons sure is frustrating though.  I find myself always trying to find a new chink in their armor.  I use a really starcannon heavy eldar force against them sometimes with decent results.
