Subject: Do flyers set off castellan minefields?

I played in a game yesterday that involved a whirlwind with castellan mines and a tau barracuda. The whirlwind never got a shot off, but we did realize it could have been a possibility that the barracuda could travel over a minefield during its movement phase. The minefield rule seems to imply that everything moving over it takes a hit, including vehicles. Would minefields be the easiest way ever to take out flyers if this was true? - Oaka

Well, as wrong as it is to have minefields hit a flyer... It does say "any enemy model moving over the minefield triggers on a roll of 4+" so I would say that by RAW it does. Although to be honest I don't think that I would play it that way if I was the mine owner. Of course I wouldn't argue if I had a flyer going over a minefield that it didn't set it off if an opponent was adament that it did.

except flyers are flying high unlike skimmers and specifically can only be physically struck by winged or jumppack equiped troops, so no. although i know that the whirlwind FW variant turret fires hyperios missles(standard krak missles that are also equiped for AA work). that can hurt it.

RAW I don't see any reason why a minefiled wouldn't hit a flyer.
It's stupid and no one would ever play that way. . .but Oaka, in your gaming group I say go for it. From what you've told us of your friends it sounds like the concept will fit right in.

Yup, Oaka's crew is a mean bunch. Many of his opponents are often half baked or several swigs short of porcelain worship. Why, we're the *evilest* drunken potheads ever to spill a beverage man.

Is that a reference to Aaron there? The man did spill three drinks on my gaming board during one game. Who the hell does an irish car bomb with a stainless steel shot glass and a paper dixie cup over a full board of terrain anyway!?!? - Oaka

I don't see why people think that a minefield wouldn't affect a skimmer. And not just from a RAW perspective, either.
We have mines NOW that aren't pressure-activated, and rather have sensors to detect target's present. We've got mines that are designed to pop up and explode above ground. And guess where the weakest armor on any vehicle is?

He was talking about flyers, not skimmers... Anyway, I'd be happy to go with RAW or common sense here. It doesn't make sense that a flyer, which is soaring hundreds of feet in the air, would be affected by a mine exploding on the ground. Unless it was a mine full of little anti-air missiles (or buzz droids from Star Wars ) or something...
