Hey Dakka Vets,

after having a bit of minor surgery and getting a day off to recover, I have spent way too much time surfing.  While surfing the wonders of the internet, I spun over to ign.com and looked at all the xbox 360 goodies coming out soon.  One game which stuck out to me is the soon to be released Gears of War, ok, it is due in Nov., but to most gammers that is considered soon.

As I watched several game trailers, it occured to me, that the main guy looks like a Space Marine scout.  So then it struck me, could a mostly scout army be done??  Could it be viable in the friendly gaming realm, for I am sure it couldn't be viable in a RTT tournement level play or could it.

In my gaming area there are a few marine players, orcs, necrons, dark eldar and a tau player.  So with that in mind, what would constitue a good list using a majority of scouts as the back bone??

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.  Thanks again for any/all feedback.

Thanks
Chappy P!

Blood angels work pretty well with lots of scouts. They come with bolt pistols and close combat weapons, which means they make better use of the furious charge than their bolter carrying brethern. Scouts also make cheaper squads meaning more rolls for the Death company. They also have infiltration and move through cover, which can mean they will get close for the assault.

Course BAs scouts have no heavy weapons... or even special weapons if I recall.

Hrm, I think it might actually work with BA's.

Sure, the Scouts don't have any heavy weapons, but they're cheap. This would allow you some flexibility in getting your anti-tank power from Heavy Support (in the form of Predators, maybe) and Fast Attack (Assault Cannon speeders, anyone?), or maybe even Elite (can BA take venerable Las/ML Dread?).

Would a setup like this still allow you to have your death company chappy and maybe a commander type with honor guard jump packing around?

I might go play with army builder and see what happens. Seems like it might work in at least friendly games. Either way, looks fun to play.

I hate BA scouts. A sarge with a powerfist, and infiltrate, and seven men behind him ate 10 plague marines and 8 nurgling bases. I hate BA scouts.

Thanks for the quick reply guys. The sad thing is, I don't own the Blood Angel Codex =(

But, if it might work then I am willing to check things out. Do BA scouts suffer from the Black Rage?? Also How are Baal Predators?? They could look cool enough to fit my concept.

Any other advice, aside from possibly BA's?? How about Vanilla Marines??

Though BA's could be nice.....Hmmmm....

I need more imput, keep it coming!

Utah (Oh god)

Baal predators are the scourge of most other armies. Honestly, a twin linked assault cannon, it doesn't get more over kill than that.

Yes scouts suffer from black rage, which is good to get them into assault. Also the death company is VERY enticing, feal no pain on a marine is like having necrons, with the option of putting a jet pack on them. And they are fearless. Did I mention that Death Company are free?!!! they are good, you pay for a chaplain to lead them, but they are great.

BA's one of the top armies in my book.

Ok...I am sensing a theme here....BA's....Hmmmm...OK

Now what would a scout themed BA army look like?? So far I am sensing a Chappy for the Death Company.

Troops would be filled with Scouts...Duh!

Would Three Baal's Be overkill??

For Objective Grabbers, I think three Landspeeders would do the trick!

Help me flesh this out further folks, what are your thoughts?? Should I go BA's?? Can I use the BA rules and have a DIY color change, a sort of "count as" situation??

Let me know and keep this thing going!

Thanks

Well for your paint scheme, you could make up a 2nd founding blood angels chapter and use the rules with a different color scheme.

I think 3 landspeeders and 3 Baals are a bit overkill, but maybe it's just that I don't like donkey cannons.

Remember, if you can, give the Baal's "Power of the Machine Spirit" and have them use the MS to fire the TLAC's. Sure, the overall number of hits will be lower, but you should end up with more rends (since you re-roll all rolls of 1-4").

Ok, check this out.

Master of Sanctity with Jump Pack, Artificer Armor (and his regular stuff) + Death Company

6 X 8 Scouts (one vet searg with term honors, power fist and bolt pistol)

3 x LS tornado

3 x Baal Predator w/HB sponsons

Only 1691 points, leaving 159 for other stuff.

Stand a chance in heck of being competitive?

Utah (Oh god)

it actually does, scouts infiltrate deep into the field, the Death company has jump packs and feel no pain, so they can get down the field. I'd suggest putting in 6 rocket launchers with the scout squads and maybe a melta if you can.

It is highly competitive, especially if you have to take objectives, infilitrate into cover nearby. Baal predators are really good, however, MS is a little much for a predator

Land speeders with just heavy bolters tend to work really well also.

If you need to get more points to get more units onto the field, then I would suggest nixing the land speaders or one of the baals and adding in a command squad (BA's command squads can have a large load out of power weapons AND jump packs, the only command squad with that ability).

BA Scout squads have more limited choices; you can have one "normal" Scout squad in a BA army, and any further have to use the BA version.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake;

the spire of angels

depending on what you want

eldar ala toc is a scout based craft world army

for CC as previously mentioned blood angels

if your going shooty you can do a dark angels 10th company themed force. 10 man squads with sniper rifles and a missle launcher+intractable special rule=perfection. throw in some scout bikes with a powerfisting SGT and a chappy on a bike and your good to go at 1850. you can get nearly 3/4 of a company in at that

Me thinks Lormax is getting a little cranky.
