There's a group of us that are going to make the trip to down from Ontario for Adepticon this year, and I have a couple of questions for anyone who's been to the event before.

1. About the team and singles events. How 'competative' are these two events. Not the calibre of player, which  by all accounts is superb, but rather the sorts of lists that get fielded? I understand that there's comp involved but it's tough to gauge just how fluffy and event is with having gone before. If it's a fairly standard comp environment I'm good to go, I just wanted to be sure it wasn't uber fluffy. For example, are people going to lose their nut if they see a monolith in 1000pts? (and yes, that really is worst case )

2. Gladiator Necrons. Don't ask me why, but that's what it looks like I'm bringing. Here's the rough cut of the list I have tabbed up. I've noticed that there are some 'Cron players here, so what do you guys think?

1 Lord with Orb,veil

1 Lord with Dest.Bdy, Warscythe, + ??

2 x 10 Immortals

2 x 10 Warriors

2 x 8 Scarabs w. D fields

2 x Monolith

That's right around 1940pts , but I was wondering if anyone had some other fancy ideas. I have considered breaking the scarabs up into smaller units, same with the immortals, and i've also considered taking some individual models, like one wraith or one H-destroyer to claim objectives and quadrants. I don't have any serious expectations of winning the Gladiator with this list, but I would like to do well.

I'm also taking Necrons for the teams and the singles. I can do the singles list no sweat, but the team event is giving me fits. My inner powergamer keeps telling me I want that monolith in 1000pts but I have some reservations about it from a comp perspective.

Cheers

If all four players have a monolith in their 1000 points...things could get a little tweaky for your teams comp scores as they are opponent judged.

Theme, however, is all judged by panel of neutral judges and might get you a few more points.

Answering your question in earnest depends on your answer to this. Is your team attending Adepticon for
1. Total fun?
2. Winning overall
3. Winning best theme/presentation
4. Winning best generals/tactician
5. Other?

Multiple monoliths will preclude many of your possible chocies being won easily, but by no means will destroy all hope.

The singles event, as head judged by me last year, is much more "competetive" list-wise and far more forgiving...that is using last years rules set. This years however...you may want to reread the exact scoring methods closely and make your own determinations as to the cost:benefit analysis of bringing 2 or 3 monoliths to that event.

You want a phase shifter on the destroyer Lord. It's mega helpful.

I would go 2 x 6 and 1 x 8 immortals just because more squads is more competitive.

Not sure I would put dfields on the scarabs.

Looks good though

I was thinking about putting the DF's in for the sheer number of guys that may show up playing either armoured company or a super heavy of some sort. It may be overkill with the gauss ability already on everything else, but it's hard to beat the pts/glance math on the scarabs, if you can actually get the little buggers into combat of course. I also worry about being able to claim objectives, so the smaller immortal squads are likely a good idea; although if I use the Veil it really is money to have a full ten to zip around with.

As for my goals for the tourney, I think that I would be aimed more at placing well for the iron man. I think it's just too difficult to set up for a galdiator win. You can take a brutal list, practice and play like mad, and still not make the grade. It's my understanding that the Gladiator is usually won by the last player who's got a perfect score, or very close to it. I can plan for cheese, but no one can plan for perfection past a certain point. The best I can do is put myself in a position to do well (winning with the 'Crons would be tough I think).

I'm good for painting score, and soft scores aren't a problem for me, I just need to decide how much of a hit I want to take on comp for the teams. Since all four of us are going to be playing Necrons we may need to tone down a couple of the lists. It tough to build fluffy when your building for the Gladiator at the same time, it just gets you thinking all the wrong things. I suppose we could head for tactician and general, but I do like to stay competetive for the overall awards - I like the challenge of hiding my cheese under a comforting layer of fluff and back-story.

Cheers

Eh - bring what you want to play.  You may get dinged on comp / theme, you may not.  Some people won't be able to deal with two monolith lists and others will be able to handle it quite easily.  We have always played what we wanted to every year and had fun.  If you are playing something to tone it down for some players, but you won't have fun playing with it, then I would recommend not toning it down.  That situation would detract from your overall Adepticon experience.  Sure there have been times that we have gotten docked in comp, but alas - we have found that you can't make everyone happy.

I've played Adepticon the last 2 years in the team tournament. It's a good time, but I'm now of the opinion (moreso after having watched a lot of debate over a recent TT primer on the AWC forums) that it's not something that's designed for mere mortals to win like other tournaments. These are highly competative events. Composition is purposefully enforced, and the painting/display bases/backstory crap is starting to get a little more than out of hand... And for sportsmanship, there's not much you can do to make an opponent figure that your army isn't cheesy when you win if he's got it in his head that it is a cheesy army.

If your like the Gladiator army, then go with it. Personally, I think its underpowered. The only thing that I question is the Lord with the Destroyer Body. Toughness 6 would be nice, but I'd usually pair them with Destroyers, and you don't have those. Your Lord isn't exactly going to be a close combat monster, so what are you planning on doing with him? And since he lacks a res orb, he's easy victory points hovering.

Well, like I said the list is a rough cut, not the final product. I'm just taking a gander on the forums to see if I can avoid buying any 'looks good on paper' type stuff. I was considering running the lord up with the Scarabs to boost HtH a little, but I'm not sold on it. The scarabs are weedy and might add too much negative combat res for the Lord to handle. I've considered dropping one unit of scarabs and squeaking the points out to add some Wraiths, but their one wound has it's own set of difficulties. And yes, there will likely be an orb on the second lord. I wasn't sure about running him wiht the scarabs and though that if he wasn't close to necron models anyway that a phase shifter might be a better buy. The other neat thing a Dest lord can do in a pinch is ferry units using the veil, as he's fast enough to turbo back into action (neat but not really that efficient as a tactic perhaps).

I'm working the list to see if I can massage in another 10 immortals but it's a rough go. I don't really want to do it at the expense of a monolith, but that seems to be the way it would go. As well, the list hasn't been properly playtested either, so I'm not sold on the scarabs en masse.

As for display bases, I think you'd have to threaten my life to even get to consider building one. I've won Golden Demons, but I'll be damned if I'll spend hours upon hours making a pretty flocked shelf for my figs. Same with backstory, if i can't tab something up over a pint in half an hour I'm thinking too hard. There's no point playing if it seems too much like work, and I'm more of a maximum effect for minimal out-put kind of guy anyway.

Cheers

2 monoliths in any list is pretty over the top, I think.

They should be 0-1 choice...but yeah, I'd definitely knock you points. Your list looks min-maxed completely.
