For this first list, which I intend to use in moderately competative (although friendly) games, I tried to cram as many guardsmen in as possible without sacrificing special or heavy weapons. I'm torn, however, as to whether or not I need the H. Vets with 3 Plasma, which with DS when possible and will provide secondary special weapon support otherwise, hanging behind my gunline so as to not attract too much fire. Configuration 1 fields 40 models, and packs 8 Plasma Guns and 3 Autocannons. I play against a lot of MEQ and Crisis Suits, even in Combat Patrol, but even then I can understand if someone says it's overkill. 400 Point Combat Patrol 1 - 396 pts Infantry Platoon - 320 pts JO w/ Iron Discipline Staff (4) w/ 2 Plasma Squad w/ Autocannon, Plasma Squad w/ Autocannon, Plasma Squad w/ Autocannon, Plasma Hardened Veteran Squad - 76 pts Vet. Sgt w/ Bolter Vets (4) w/ 3 Plasma Configuration 2 is of a different design. It is not as robust as the first list, but it is more mobile. It fields 33 models, packing 2 Autocannons, 4 Plasma Guns, and 2 Multilaser Sentinels. 400 Point Combat Patrol 2 Infantry Platoon - 210 pts JO w/ Laspistol, CCw Staff (4) w/ Lasguns Squad w/ Autocannon, Plasma Squad w/ Autocannon, Plasma Storm Trooper Squad - 100 pts 8 STs w/ 2 Plasma Sentinel - 45 pts Multilaser Sentinel - 45 pts Multilaser Let me know what you think. I don't get to test my lists very often, so this is pure theoryhammer until late November. CK

The first list would be more effective, but the second would be more fun to play.
I've had some luck with Sentinels in combat patrol, but only when accompanied by an Chimera.
I think the list was something like:
Armoured Fist Squad with Autocannon, Plasma Chimera with MuL and HHB
2 MuL Sentinels 10 Vets with 3 Plasma, Autocannon.
Only 20 bodies, and much less plasma. However, if you sit your infantry in cover and plink away, the Sentinels and Chimera are remarkably distracting and put out a lot of decent firepower (3MuL + 1HB). The Chimera is quite resilient at this point level.
Sentinels are great for forcing Target Priority tests (good with Tau, and somewhat against Master-less Marines). By scouting them up you can ensure they remain in front of your army even once they're stunned/immobilized/weapondestroyed, and still force TP tests. Just keep them somewhat to either side, so you don't block your own firelines with the wrecks...

I like the first one too. I lose 4 Plasmas and an Autocannon to field those two Sentinels in list 2, not to mention several ablative wounds. I'm trying to stay away from Chimeras for the time being - I'm too poor to buy any, on top of the fact that it doesn't go well with the theme of elite infantry that I'm basing my army around. Lots of good, well-trained soldiers (STs are my regulars and regular Guard are my Conscripts), but only a few Russes for fire support.
Since I'm on the subject, I'll go on to say that these guys are supposed to be expert urban fighters, excelling on foot with their numerous heavy and special weapons. Their distinct lack of artillery, armor, and personnel carriers stems from the destruction of their homeworld's manufactories several hundred years ago. Most of the vehicles in service were subsequently destroyed in the massive armored battles on the planet surface. Since then, the Veritian Grenadiers (Tentative title, only because it lacks the distinct 40K air of anachronism and heraldry.) have used the extensive raw materials underneath its hive cities to supply the forge worlds of Gryphonne IV and Stygies. In return, these forge worlds supply the Grenadiers with large quantities of Leman Russ MBTs, but unfortunately cannot spare any of the more specialized vehicles of the Imperium. The Grenadiers dislike armored transport due to the very environment in which they usually operate, although this is beginning to change, after the massacre of two entire regiments in one of Veritia's abandoned urban zones. Traitor Marines and Cultists were able to simultaneously detonate several operational gas mains throughout the city, which led to the fragmentation of hundreds of buildings in the region. rockcrete shards tore through the armor of the Grenadiers, which instead would have plinked harmlessly off of IFVs that were available but not used. Such an oversight led to the execution of several officers in command, and the new command structure has taken a more favorable view of combined arms approach, with armored personnel carriers accompanying their respective cargoes and heavy support in the form of direct-fire Russes for assaults or indirect-fire Basilisks for seige or defensive fighting.
Back on topic though, I'm really shooting for an infantry-heavy Combat Patrol. This is my heavy-handed way of dealing with the hideous amounts of Pulse and Bolter fire I often find myself up against, since both penetrate most of my armor and kill my Guardsmen on a 2 and a 3, respectively. With 40 ablative wounds protecting my core weapons complement, I'll be able to easily take down the 20-some FW units I face, which are usually led by a trio of Plasma-packing Crisis suits, topped off by a Shas'el with a CIB to make my day. To quote Capt_K, I "want to make [my] opponent's sphincter pucker" when he see's he's outnumbered and outgunned hideously as Tau, or to make my BT opponent cry when he watches his 15 or so CC initiates get torn a new orifice by such hideous amounts of MEQ-killing Plasma. Of course, these are friendly games, so we toss around half-serious, half-joking insults more than we do the dice.
I just wish that Hellhounds had 11 side armor in these sorts of situations...that would be good fun.
