This all came up when upon reading the lizardmen FAQ my friend said ha I know how to kill your slaan. I said how and he said I'll just challenge him after all he can't refuse. Well of course I replied no he can't accept challenges. To my dismay though it appears he was correct and the FAQ does say "Slaan are not meant for combat and unless he is in the fighting rank, he cannot issue or refuse challenges." It may just be me but I think that might be a mistake as the next line says "If he is in the fighting rank he may issue and accept challenges as normal." Mistake or not it still says what I don't want to hear. While I was trying to think of ways to protect my slaan I read it's entry and it says that a slaan is never forced to move into the front rank unless it is reduced to less than three models. Could I use this to avoid a challenge? Even if I can it still wont help if I'm charged in the flank or the rear. I'd like to hear your views on this and how cheesy you think it is. Hopefully my friends will come to their senses and play the rules how they were intended to be played so I can have more fun |

w00t I found the bit in the rule book on this topic and on page 77 onder the sub heading Fighting a challenge it states Once a challenge is accepted, the character that accepted the challenge is moved in the ranks so that the two protagonists are opposite each other. If this is not possible, then the challenger is moved in the ranks to a position where he is in base contact with the character that accepted the challenge. Thus as long as your slaan is the only model that can recaive a challenge (i.e. no veteran) then i am moved to be in base contact with you. Then you will be on the receiving end of a bunch of attacks that have killing blow against large targets courtesy of the virtue of heros. Three cheers for the mighty Brettonian palidan, may you live on in our hearts for evermore. And yes this is quite cheesy but still very legal and a quite valid tactic against a big powerful expensive monster.

I thought that you could not challenge anyone who was not in the front rank.

If you Slaan is not in a fighting rank, he cannot be challenged.   If he cannot be challenged, he cannot accept or refuse a challenge.   Your opponent can only challenge characters that are in a fighting rank. |

In El PAso, TX <Need players around here

The wording is confusing but it makes sense when you take it step by tep. What it means is that as long as the slan is in a unit with at least 1 full rank, he will always hang out in the second rank and thus is not up for challenges. One that first rank is gone though, through casualties, then he is moved to the front and is up to be hit. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, it says that in your book and in the codex

When it says that the Slaan 'cannot issue or refuse challenges' while in the second rank, it means that if the player chooses to decline a challenge, the Slaan cannot be the character sent to the back of the unit.

This is why you always take a unit champion.
"Ha haa! I challenge you! Now I will kill the bloated toad-thing, and his little skink, too!"

"I accept your challenge. Scar-leader, silence this monkey."
