Ok, I'm trying to finish up my Ultramarines.  The final steps include basing and putting on all the transfers/squad markings.

I did all my bolter marines and my terminator Librarian (who has his small base glued/green stuffed onto a 40mm base).  I'm using glue and some aquarium gravel for it to give them a decent amount of substance to the basing.

My initial idea was to paint the rocks all black and then dry brush on some grey.  I'm wondering if I should let them be a little more colorful by keeping the rocks their natural color and just painting the base edges black and then just applying transfers and calling it done.

Here is a pic of what I've done so far:

Paint it black & drybrush it grey. Otherwise, it's just going to look like they are fighting in aquarium gravel.

He's got a mind like a steel trap. By which I mean it can only hold one idea at a time;
it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

Really what you should do is paint the rocks black and then drybrush them with a grey.

Both leaving the rocks natural or just paining them a flat grey will make the model look unfinished.

Edit: Yeah, what Anung said (which is the same thing as me).

Or dry brush some brown on as well. A tuft of green flock here and there (after painting is done) will also go a long way at making them look good.

Yes why ydon't you just throw on some inkwash/dry brush a bit. No need to make life a chore unless you're into the basing.

Paint the edges black or graveyard earth (thats seems in vogue at the moment) drybrushes those bad boys grey and a little brown and add some small clumps of static flock.
