any tips for painting Imperial fist, my lil bro wants to work on an Imperial Fist army, and i have thought of getting him a battleforce once he graduates from HS.

Wherever and whenever they appear they leave only destruction in their wake; they are the Lords of Death, Bringers of War. The Dark Angels.

Oh, you think the darkness is your ally, but you merely adopted the dark. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn’t see the light until I was already a man; by then, it was nothing to me but blinding!- Helen Keller

Taken from the Facebook! Going to be taking more pics and uploading as articles at some point.

"Nuke's Painting Tip: Yellow 101

I've heard people saying that yellow is a difficult to pull off. Because its poor coverage and vibrancy, yellow often leaves your miniature looking like a) a blob of dried paint, b) something from Hasbro or Konami that you picked up for your five year old nephew.

So in this article I will cover everything from the easiest way to paint yellow, mainly focusing on non-airbrush technique, because I'm nice

----

Getting the first coat down smoothly:

Yellow is HELLISH to paint on dark surface, so here is what you can do to get that first coat of yellow down smoothly without wasting time doing tons of layers and leaving brushmarks on your mini

A: Can spray (household brands work fine, as long as it's matte) - go over to a hardware store and buy a can of white primer and a can yellow paint. Make sure they're matte, not glossy.
Simply prime your minis white, then go over with yellow. Easy as.

B: Glaze, or thinned paint over white surface. As simple as it sounds - prime your mini white, then using diluted down paint (or glaze) and a large brush (so you leave less brushmarks), go over the white surface with yellow until you're happy. The keys are to dilute your paint, and use a large brush.
--------

How to shade yellow?

No... I bet you don't want your Imperial Fists army looking like that Bumble Bee toy... you want it to be more realistic and to have some depth to it. If so, try this

Wash:
- Personally, I'm not so fond of using black wash over yellow. It's too unnatural. Brown or dark red are more suitable. For the mini in the picture, I used:

Vallejo Game Ink - Black
Vallejo Game Ink - Brown
Satin Varnish (to add some viscosity, you can use water, glaze medium, matte varnish or acrylic medium or lahmein medium if it please you)

Make sure you dilute your wash down and dab any excess wash away before it dries and leave stains on your mini.

-----

Advanced Shading / highlighting to add depth

In the picture, you can see that there's a gradation from dark brown to yellow. There's two things you need to know

NOTE 1) You can't get that smooth gradation with normal washing technique (gravity and drying time won't be that kind to you - you'll be left with stains)

NOTE 2: Please please please don't try to paint yellow by starting with black primer then layer it up to brown -> yellow and so on... it's too time consuming and tedious

NOTE 3: you can use an airbrush to do add gradation, but when it comes to small surfaces like knuckles / chest / top of backpack, it's really hard to control. in the picture I used a brush to do it because airbrush-shading is harder to control and very directional.

OK - most of the theories out of the way,
So Here's exactly how I did it:

NOTE - For those who doesn't have an airbrush, just skip the first few steps and use the aforementioned method of getting the yellow basecoat down instead

Step 1: German Yellow Primer
Step 2: German Red Primer (pre shading from the bottom)
Step 3: Zenithal Highlight with grey primer
Step 4: German Yellow Primer
Step 5: VMA Ocher

*Packs away the airbrush* .... phew!

Step 6: Add chipping and other details

*Now the important bit*

Step 7: With a medium sized brush (not huge) I washed the whole mini with the mentioned wash recipe

Step 8: With thinned down Dark Flesh and a detail brush, I washed the edge.

Step 9: Lightly paint the areas that you want shaded with Scorched Brown (or Dark flesh) - really really diluted down the paint and use they feathering technique.

Repeat until you get the depth of color that you want.

Step 10: Optional - if you want to add extra edge highlight, you can use yellow or yellow+white.

-----------

Summary:

The key to a nice and deep yellow is, for me, the mixture of the use of right shading colors and of course, the depth of shade (shadow) itself. Other little things like weathering and using complementing colors to boost the overall tone of your work is really subjective to what you're working on.

Righty... Gotta go back and finish this guy.

I hope this wall of text of a tutorial is helpful for those who are painting their Imperial Fists, Iyanden or yellow nids.

Please share, like, and comments - I will be very grateful and motivated to write more tuts!

Cheers

Nice tutorial again.

I may adapt it to do some of my pre-heresy Imperial Fists, my 4k versions are far to far along to incorporate a fresh scheme!

Glad to help! Love pre heresy imperial fists, also great to see.

Quick PIP/WIP of a Vampire heroes/lords display coming up... for a full army: we like for their to be a special little display to show off characters. Often if this means the bases will be unwieldy in the game we magnetize the miniatures to the display, and then to a more appropriate gaming base. The display base also often has a clear plastic cover which goes on top to protect minis during transit or if on display in a store or something

One for Vlad...

That's the one Geordie!

Coming to destroy a Christmas near you... the studio is being commissioned for two, yes two of these big beasties. Stock up on bug spray.

Also he's magnetized for storage and postage! He might be a beast in the game, but we don't want him failing his armour save against the postie.

Also more info on the vamp cave, I believe Krell lives on Vlads spot now as Vlad has his own impaler themed display above.

This is the finished scheme for the Tyranids.

Both the skin and carapace will have another lyer with the airbrush, super thin like, to dull down the high lights and spots... will create an alien thin membrane kind of look! To mke it more like the swarm lord.

I like your vlad so far, my vlad came out looking like an old watercolour painting which in my eyes is cool. We call him Vlad Von Beepstein.

Received the Imperial Fist TODAY!

All I can say about my experiences with you guys is extremely positive!

For those folks considering placing an order I can definitely recommend Nuke Arts!

If i'd have been in on friday to receive the delivery the first time it would have made it in little more than four days, which is better than some who are UK based! It was extremely well packaged and the quality? Well, the pictures on the site speak for themselves!

Thanks guys. Look forward to our continuing partnership!

Thanks very much Geordie, like wise mate
Highly recommend Geordie's events for those who game for fun!

Elmir wrote:What material do you use for those odly shaped rocks?

It's cork We also cover the cork in superglue, any superglue will do. This makes it hard and durable, and avoids paint wastage: cork will absorb paint so might take a few layers if it's got a layer of superglue it's rock hard and there's no problem!

I did the EC's paint scheme on my grey knights. Painting purple is one of my favourite things to do.

I believe they are finished, Nuke was working them over the Christmas holidays, however the studio is closed I believe until the 4th. And then they are moving to a larger space. However to keep you going I have this image Nuke sent me just before X Mas:
