The fact that you call them 'boob' marines isn't helping your case here.

What would you prefer? Buxom Marines?

'Why aren't there more women who share this hobby?' is suddenly rising to the top of my 'What's the most stupid thing said to you by a gamer?' list...

I hate myself for even asking this, but are we talking simple female Marines (something I'm personally OK with, although labelling them that probably isn't smart) or are we talking female Marines who are actually topless?

To answer the first, whenever I hear someone asking: "Women are all over this hobby. The best question is why they aren't gaming with you?"

To answer the second, these are actually 'boobs hanging out' space marine-ish chick figures.

No, I'm reasonably sure the second answers the first for a lot of ladies.

I mean, I play with a lot of ladies. Not in 40k anymore, but until recently I wasn't playing 40k either. But I can certainly see why some of them may be a little put off by such miniatures, combined with how some players behave (I honest to goodness thought we were going to die in a sea of blood when my wife started breastfeeding in turn three of a game while her Lizardmen were kicking my ass. The eyes, man...the eyes...) when women are present.

Have you heard of powered bikini? It's like power armor but instead of the armor it's a bikini. With big boots though. I wish I was exaggerating.

Alas, I've only had the pleasure of the chainmail bikini. And thus will never, ever google that phrase, because the internet has already killed more than enough of my brain sells. I mean cells. Crap.

I've met a handful that have played. Had a previous girlfriend who was interested in Fantasy, but couldn't get behind 40k. Too bro maybe.

Played against one at Adepticon years ago, and then another at a local tournament. The Adepticon one I THINK had 'nids. I might have been drunk for that game.
The local one was Sisters of Battle that I remember VERY distinctly, as she had stuck a bunch of penis shaped erasers on the ends of her minis weapons. I guess she'd had her bachelorette party the night before or something. I wish I could make this kinda stuff up.

Females are somewhat of a rarity in the 40k world though. It's maybe 5-10% of the people at Adepticon. Not proportional to gencon.

I don't care if you're a guy or a gal. Dipping is gross. I can handle it in the field, or camping or something outdoors- but people toting around a spit bottle? Just the sight of it makes me gag.

Speaking of, here's another 'stupid thing said by a gamer':

Only manchildren see a model with breasts and go "HURR DURR YOU MASTURBATE TO THAT!" Most people are mature enough to see a representation of breasts and not get sexually aroused and lose control.

Like I said, not my preference. Not something I'd spend money on.

Also not something that warrants a moral crisis, either.

Don't like the model? Don't buy it or play against someone using them. If you come emotionally unhinged at the sight of it, it's probably time to find an adult and seek professional help.

I doubt it. The average adult woman isn't an unhinged harpy that comes apart at a caricature of breasts. Only manchildren behave this way.

Most women don't play this game because quite simply- wargaming doesn't have the same appeal to them. The other reason is because of desperate neckbeards that are either flat-out pigs, or try to treat them all like delicate butterflowers that can't handle the real world.

Mine, for example, doesn't care. In her own words, "If I'm jealous of a cartoon image of a woman, I need to be institutionalized".

But this thing is a two-edged sword.

On one hand, I've seen that argument "it offends women and puts them off!". Whatever.

On the other hand, I said "the store I worked in part-time didn't care as long as there weren't kids around". Apparently, it's wrong to hide breasts from children. "They're just breasts!"

The same people made both of these arguments.

Ere go, the reason women aren't playing is because you treat them like they're more sensitive than a child.

No one should be offended by breasts. As I said, I was perfectly comfortable with my wife getting hers out in a gaming store while we gamed. I'm really nbot sure how I can treat her less like a child than that, honestly. I'm also perfectly fine with a friend who fields the old style Diaz Daemonnetes, too. They're nice models.

However, there is a bit of a difference between breasts and over-sexualizing women. Daemonnettes being topless makes sense. A naked human whose supposed to be armoured for battle...less so.

Without going too deeply into the whole psychology of the thing because 1) I only have a general knowledge of the subject and 2) I very much doubt anyone here cares, the more peoples brains are exposed to scantily clad to naked ladies to titillate, sell, the more women are registered by the same part of the brain that sees objects instead of people. There is some debate as to exactly what else occurs, but again, my understanding is limited.

Simply put, nudity done right - for a purpose that makes sense within the context of a story or character - is perfectly fine. Nudity for the sake of 'look, it has booooooobs' is less so. Mostly because the kind of people who do so tends to treat women as, you guessed it, objects.

...would you care to guess which category I think Boob and Bikini Marines fall into?

Of course, others disagree. But given the fact that Warhammer has a far lower percentage of female players than, say, Roleplaying Games or video games (at least, in my personal experience of visiting conventions designed for such - I couldn't even being to guess where you could get solid data. I suppose a survey set up on the official sites for a roleplaying game and Games Workshop with a similar fanbase size would be a start, but other factors make that imperfect) suggests there is a hiccup somewhere in there.

That's fine, she's feeding her kid.

I'm not going to gawk at a lady breastfeeding her kid. And I don't care to- I'm just grateful there's not a screaming, hungry kid somewhere being blown off so his parents can play games. That was a trend in one town I lived in, where this guy would bring his herd of kids in and most of them were too young to fend for themselves without serious adult supervision. Call it a 'grudge' if you will, call me a jerk- but for the longest time I would walk into a game shop and if I saw a handful of kids, I just walked out. Bad experiences are hard to shake off, especially when it's kids that break models, steal them, etc. and the parents neglect them. Another rant for another day, long story short- I don't care if she's double-barrel breastfeeding your kid, it's called being a parent and babies can't eat pizza.

And those old Daemonettes are fine by me. I do think it is a bit silly to have, say, a random topless SoB running around. If you were playing, say, a Slaanesh renegade army and had something like that, I wouldn't care so much.

It's a tiddy.

And at that, it's not a real one. It's a plastic, resin, or metal tiddy.

If you're getting off on it, or getting offended by it- you need to see a professional.

Fighting a culture war in a thread about gamers saying stupid things is ironic. Ironic on the scale of Rogue-Trader-era fluff.

Which reminds me of a game from a long time ago, when Genestealer Cults were still a new thing. Was about to play on a board with all these small buildings arranged into a grid that covered most of the board. My opponent went off about his Genestealers, how it's not possible to shoot them in this maze before they would charge my army.

When we finally got the table, I told him, since you have such an advantage, let me rearrange the terrain to give myself a chance. He said sure. So I put the buildings in a line across the middle, blocking all movement except through a small gap. Lined up all my tacs and devs so they were in front of it. Put a couple Rhinos in place to act as a door and control what could make it's way through the hole and a dreadnought to tie up the first units that got through. Proceeded to table him.

We gamers are sometimes too sure of ourselves. Nothing more stupid than that.

Oh, they're dumb models for sure. I won't argue that.

But it's hardly a moral outrage, either. I'd be more concerned that someone is wasting their money on a poor quality model like that.

I mean, Wargame Exclusive has some risque' models of much better quality if you really, really need them.

Actually, using a Lot of casino dice on a crowded table, or an excessively large tape measure, are both pretty common and legitimate problems.

You don't need a tape measure that can extend more than 10' - 12' for wargaming, and if you're rolling more than a dozen dice it's very difficult to make room for casino dice.

Obviously, there's no hard and fast rule on any of that, it all falls under gaming etiquette, but a lot of how people will react depends on how you present what you're using.

For example, when using Dakka Dice I'd always show my opponent that they were all the same ("Dakka Dakka on the 6") and never had any issues. But using a mix of custom dice with logos on the 1 and the 6 on different ones can cause legitimate problems.

Anyway, just my $0.02!

Dude, sniping back is against the rule. You could stop being such an hyper-sensitive pansy and start following the rules. Or at least stop whining about being banned because of it. I'm going to get banned for the snipping back I made just above but if you get banned too it's fair lol.

Mainly the thing is that Dakka is very careful not to show who is banned, for how long and because of what. The result is that noone really knows what's against the rule and what's okay, and everyone feels unfairly singled out . But that's a discussion for another thread I guess.
