Back in the days of poor automatic settings on cameras, it was really helpful to get a decent set of colour balance and contrast. These days all phones and camera have auto-settings that are usually better than whatever algorithm the auto-correct tool uses.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

I think it sometimes improves the image, but not always, so I decide differently each time I upload an image.

I generally put a piece of black cardboard behind and underneath the mini and set the phone up on a little tripod.

After that I point my painting lamp nearly directly at the miniature (it has to be neatly parallel as if you have that strong a light overhead it just drowns everything in unnatural shadows)

I then use the ‘pro’ settings and adjust the shutter speed and white balance so that the the image is as dark in the background as possible without completely losing the detail of the lit miniature. Adjusting the shutter speed and white balance just allows to retain a nice dark background while having the mini itself well lit.
