Maddening Mutant Boss of Chaos

Boston

So a few of us from Boston/Waltham traveled up to Manchester NH last week, to play in the War Without End Tournament set up by Ragnar (Mannanhin) at Empire Games.
Which turned out to be a blast.

(That's K and Ron, two fellow DorkaMorka players.)

I took:
Word Bearers, 1500 points.
Lord, crozius, d. strength, d. speed, furious charge, spikey bitz, bolt pistol, MoCU.
2 oblits.
8 csm, infiltrate, meltagun, champion with power fist and mutation.
8 csm, 2 plasmaguns, champion with demon talons.
6 csm, lascannon, infiltrate.
8 bloodletters.
8 furies.
5 bikes, 2 meltaguns, champion with power fist and mutation.
6 havocs, 3 autocannons, tank hunters.

[note: all csm squads have MoCU, icons]

The list worked well. The army was pretty nicely balanced, fielding enough firepower to whittle down a "gojirra" list with genesteelers, and enough close combat capability to stand in with a tough Death Guard army and dispatch an orc horde.

(Here's a closer look at the host, including the aspiring champion with demon talons.)

Game 1. Versus orcs. (Warboss in truck with a mob of nobs. Another truck mob. A grot mob with slaver. Several mobs with big shoota contingents. A unit of 2 killer cans, and another killer can. A looted demolisher.)
Table was sprinkled with building ruins. One larger ruin dominated the center.
Mission was alpha cleanse, essentially, with nightfight rules from turn three on.
My opponent was Derek, who sometimes plays at Danger Planet (in Waltham, the finest store in the land).

(Deployment.)

Orcish mishaps start on the bottom of turn 1, when his demolisher went orcy and surged forward 9 inches, taking away the demolisher cannon shot and presenting side armor. (Obliterators took it out. Havocs chewed through the 2-kan unit.)
I sent my bikes, lord, and the plasmagun squad around the far edge of the center ruins.

He sent both trucks to try to head them off, but thanks to the timely arrival of bloodletters and furies, the boss and truck mobs headed into the jaws of a deadly trap. Plasmagun fire penetrated and destroyed the warboss’s truck. Spilling out of the wreckage, the warboss and nob mobs took a combined charge from the bikes, furies, and lord, wiping them out before they could swing their power klaws.
From that point on, Derek struggled and failed to regain the initiative. I ended up holding my quarter uncontested, another quarter uncontested, and other forces deep in his starting quarter, contesting that one as well. Victory.
Derek was a good-natured opponent, who kept his spirits up even as his battle plan and then his army disintegrated.

Game 2. Versus Tyranids. (Several genestealer squads. 3 zoes. A hive tyrant with 2 tyrant guard. And 5 carnifexes, 3 of them shooty and 2 of them kitted out for close combat.)
Mission was kill stuff and Gaze of the Gods (which helped me out, since units in assault starting the turn size 8 gained preferred enemy, a blessing I invoked repeatedly). Terrain was desert (which also helped me, since the cover was limited).
Opponent was Mike Moran, who plays a lot at Empire Games. Nice guy, with a very friendly style of play. (He eventually got my vote for favorite opponent.)

Concentrating early fire on the genestealers, I managed to mow both squads down to 1 and 2 bugs, respectively, before they could fleet their way across the table to my lines. I also drew several shooty carnifex off to one side of the table by dangling an infiltrating squad and turbo-zipping the bikes to that flank. These forces then hugged cover, taking opportunity shots here and there and evading his efforts to take them out with fex and zoe shooting. (Once he brought my bikes down to 3, they promptly fled off to cower behind cover in a corner, nursing my highest-point unit.)

Meanwhile, I put wounds on several carnifex here and there with las-cannon shots from the obliterators and las-cannon squad as they lumbered across the table. This fire softened them up for the arrival of the bloodletters, who first mowed their way through 2 of the zoenthropes, then swept into and took out 2 of the wounded carnifex (before being swamped and stomped by the tyrant, guards, and third carnifex).
From that point on, I played cat and mouse, trying to keep scoring units alive. (This mission awarded points both for killing stuff and keeping scoring units alive.)
I won by a few hundred points. A close game against a great opponent.

Game 3. Versus Death Guard (led by Jaime Hatcher, a very skilled DakkaDakka veteran). Mission was All Out Assault (with troop units getting sustained assault), on a table with a few forests, some low hills, scattered minor ruins. Death Guard had a statured flying lord, 2 large squads (14 each) of Plague Marines, 2 packs of Plague Bearers, a set of Nurglings, a las-cannon dreadnought, a predator, and a defiler.
I spent a lot of my havoc and obliterator fire trying to take out the vehicles (though I probably should have concentrated on thinning out the marine squads). (In the end, all I managed to do to his vehicles was destroy the dread with obliterator las-cannon shots, and blow the battle cannon off the defiler with my las-cannon squad.)
His lord basically mowed through my infiltrating squad, then fell to my bloodletters, who in turn got swamped by one of those 14-marine squads. Even the arrival of the furies failed to prop up that collapsing flank.
Meanwhile, on the other flank, I played my bikes too aggressively, bogging them down in a combat with the nurglings, who pinned them down long enough for plague bearers and the defiler to wade in and pummel the bikes into oblivion.

(Here I am trying to get to the objective at the center of the table late in the game -- too late and with too little.)

Jamie played a tactically shrewd game, and beat me solidly. (He was also a fun opponent.)

High soft scores, 2 victories, and a modest accumulation of battle point bonuses here and there were enough to win me second place! And I got best sportsman, which was cool, since I played three new players. All in all, an enormously fun day.

Empire Games is an amazing place to play. The space is huge and light and high ceilinged. The tables and set-up and terrain were all first rate. And Ragnar put together a highly enjoyable tournament, with balanced missions and smooth logistics. I highly recommend a return visit, either to Empire Games or to their next tournament (which is coming in February).

More pics:

Here's Jaime Hatcher's Death Guard contingent -- which was stunningly beautiful.

He took first place overall.

Some details, starting with his dreadnought:

And a look at one of his plague marine squads:

Here's Carl's equally gorgeous Kroot army, which took best painted:

Here's K's nid swarm:

and finally, here's a shot of Mike Do's marine army.

Opponent was Mike D

Of Beastie Boys fame? That would be the coolest thing ever.

Good report, some very nice armies there (especially yours), but I'm not too big on that Plague marine squad. I don't associate the phrase "riot of colour" with Nurgle, it's more of a Slaanesh thing IMO.

Interesting battles all in all. The Nurgle army seems huge for 1500 points. Trying to stop two squads at 14 strong each would definitely be an endeavor. Your list had a pretty balanced feel overall and seemed to fare pretty well. The pics were well done and dispursed through the report, which is always a big plus for battle reports.

Thanks for the write up. Too bad it's several states away for me to get to one of their tourneys.

Bah! I made the drive from Tennessee back in the day for a New Hampshire tournament; actually, I did it a couple times. It's worthwhile, and if I had the money supply now that I did back then, I'd still be doing it. If you're lucky, you might sight a Wakelin or two...

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake;
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

I don't think my wife would share you same view. Too far for a tourney. Games Days, GT's, Adepticon or Necro; usually not a big deal, but have to plan in advance.

Nice report, Fred! Thanks for the pics. Your second round opponent was Mike Moran, actually. The player of the Marine army in your last shot was Mike Do.

Fourganger- Jaime's nurgle army is themed as being composed of marines from many different chapters who have fallen from Nurgle's Rot and been corrupted/reanimated. Hence the different color schemes.

I guessed that was the intent, but I still don't like it.

Where did you find those oval bases?

They sell them here, son't know if they're the ones that Tinfoil used or not-

Indeed, those oval bases are sold by Gale Force 9. And they're magnatized, too.

You should try to make it to the Danger Planet 40k tournament in Waltham this Saturday (Dec. 2), I imagine many of the people that went to this tournament shall also be there

There you go using your ?common sense? again.
