I was reading in a post a few days ago here on Dakka that rokkits were always a better pick than big shootaz. I ran the numbers, and...

Rokkit
.18 meq in 5+
.36 geq in 5+

Big Shoota
.22 meq in 5+
.55 geq in 5+

That's assuming you get 1 full and 2 partials (ie 2 hits) off of the rokkit against geq. I can see how losing the punch against vehicles sucks, but...

Just want to hear it explained by an expert I'm still going 'round and 'round on what I want my next army to be.

I can see how losing the punch against vehicles sucks, but...

I'm not an expert but I thought the logic of taking the rokkit over the big shoota was exactly that. Orks have no problems dealing with troops (tons of attacks on the charge, choppas, etc), its the vehicles and MCs that are the real trouble.

Iorek: "Snoogums, you're right. Your arguments are irrelevant, and they sure as heck aren't going away."

I didn't think Rokkits were Blast weapons...

I really aught to know, considering I've got 1500+ points of Orks.

I put Big Shootas in my Shoota Boy squad, and Rokkits pretty much everywhere else. There's no question that Big Shootas are nice weapons, the real issue is the role they fill in the list. Boyz can kill infantry in hand to hand... You need Rokkits to kill tanks, otherwise you're perpetually at their mercy. Since Orks are such terrible shots individually, you have to provide a hail of Rokkits to kill anything.

I assumed that they could use the template like regular rocket launchers, but upon closer inspection they don't even have a profile in the Ork codex. For that matter, neither do sluggas or shootas. Sigh @ GW.

Ork Rokkit's are half-range krak missiles... they don't get the option of shooting frags.

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias

bs doesn't matter because you usually pack 4 to a mob. Besides ork players have some of the most amazing luck when shooting! It depends really they both have their place in an ork army.

Big Shootas are also useful for dropping AV10 skimmers (almost exactly as good as rokkitz against landspeeders, but 50% more range) - I'd always have a few for that, but I'd go 2:1 in favour of rokkitz

As an Eldar player, big shootas ruin my day. Almost as well as some heavy bolters. So, i would keep several models of both big shootas and rokkits, and tailer your army depending on your opponent. Against those stupid power armored gits the imperium is so fond of, rokkits are the way to go. Guard/nids/eldar, shootas.

...just my two cents

I would just go with rokkets all the way, you use the ap3 against meqs, not the blast (do they even HAVE a blast?) also you take out tanks easier...

Orks tend to do fine against most infantry, even against t4 4+ save troops like genestealers which you may not want to fight in CC the rokkets do better! 0.83 dead stealers per hit, shoota gets 3 hits, 1.5 wounds. 0.75 dead after saves...

I will go with rockets all the way.
