Thanks. Yes I am pleased with the faces but have been thinking about doing it the 'modern' way by which I mean painting a dark flesh first and then layering up, instead of painting it a mid tone and inking back as it can be a bit hit and miss sometimes. Will need moar paints..

I'm surprised too but I think they can be ok when done right. They just need to release a load more, drop the points, allow them options on heroes and in squads, give normal SM the Primaris stat line, give Primaris a better stat line, re write the core rules to prevent people just falling back from combats, improve all the chapter tactics, apply said CT to vehicles like everyone else, replace SM unique 'thing' as they gave CT to everyone but SM got nothing instead (no, ATSKNF doesn't count) and make bolters great again.

L O L...

Well it won't be long until the next marine book so just try to stay positive. I'm always here to talk if you need me.

Are you on to those conquest/wake the dead Intercessors next then or the rest of the reivers? Be good to do get a full Primaris kill team painted up.

Will you hold me until the Dec FAQ?

I've base coated and inked the next 3 (Conquest) Reivers and have built a 5 man (Conquest) Inters squad with fancy AGL conversion and they are all primed. I then ran out of impetus it was a pretty big hobby spooge (converting and painting those Scouts was quite ambitious, as well as building 11 Primaris with conversions and painting 3) and I'm a bit spent now. I got ill when I had time off and I'm still not wholly better and I've family staying from today. When all that's over hopefully I can get back into the groove, I want to get a Primaris KT done (as you say) and then do some other projects.

I'd like to do that Captain I've got started and the Contemptor would be useful. I've a Razorback with spare AC turret ready to go as well. I only need to paint 2 squads and a standard to finish off my Company too but the completest in me wars with the pragmatist who says a 6th Tactical and 2nd Assault squad don't need to be high up the painting schedule!

I'm with Stompa (hello mate) in that I'm surprised at your creeping embrace of the Primares. Especially the flying ones. Still I'm sure you'll make them look ace when the time comes!

Looking forward to seeing more of these guys and getting done over by them in games.

Hello MLCS!

Agreed, the faces continue to improve for each iteration of marines or guard squads. I remain deeply envious as my own attempts to paint human faces on my Escher were an unmitigated disaster and I ended up throwing them into the paint stripper, too many years painting comic ork faces.

I'm going to (when I've done the HH armies I'm building for Alpha Legion and Dark Mechanicus) start a purely Primaris army painted up as Mentor Legion (with traditional Owl Iconography) and will be using those Reivers in large mobs.

There's a good battle report from Winters SEO (who I started watching for his very good HH battle reports) where his opponent uses them in big mobs in his Raven Guard and imo, they appeared to be quite stabby. What I'm very tempted by in the new Primaris are the pure Plasma gun squad though, those are scary.

Thanks. I do faces in the old style, Elf flash basecoat, then old style thinned brown ink wash followed by a Reikland wash. Then repaint the Elf flesh in thin layers. If I'm going further I'll do bleached bone highlights too. I will repeat the washes very thinned if necessary. I sometimes use a super thin red wash for lips and mouths.

I always had a soft spot for the mentors, they were nearly my chapter but I didn't fancy doing that chapter badge by hand on every guy.

I'm a big fan of Winters and watched his BattReps since 8th, nice 'tea and biscuits' type of games. I remember that game being one of the first to make it seem like Primaris might work in an army, there's also a Restartes vs 'Classic' Marines game. The Classics win.

Been awhile. I've been a bit ill and life events have been keeping me from my toys. I have started grabbing a bit of time recently however..

These guys have been started and....

Nearly finished..

I will make this guy less staring..

I've finished these guys now and will do some glamour shots soon..these are the next 3 ETB guys. There are rumours of Inters getting a new sheet (or at least new options) and I hope Reivers will get the options too, be nice to give the combat unit some combat equipment. I've 5 'proper' Reivers on sprues ready to go after we see what happens to the entry with CA and latterly the SM Dex I expect next year. I will probably just stockpile my Primaris till then. I would to get like one of the coming Conquests as well as it's got a nice spread of dudes from DI sprues. They can go on the pile. I will do my ETB Inter squad next however as I want them for KT. I managed to run them recently too, vs a (mostly) all Stealth Suit team no less. They held their own well and got a surprising amount of value from shock grenades. But the resultant combats were a slap fest as I had no way of ignoring the 3+ save. Boo Primaris, boo. *fingers crossed for PW on Reivers*

I did some pics for these guys but they were too blurry even for me and I've only found the time to re-shoot today..

Still blurry but better(ish)..I need another small daylight lamp I think, especially as there's no light from the sun at the mo too...I'm pleased with them. I actually spent far less time on these 3 than the original 3. These came out well partially from the experience gained from doing the others.

All 6. They will mostly be used in KT I think, but hopefully they'll get some love soon. CA18 has stated it's doing a new sheet for Inters but no news on Reivers who need attention more really...

I've started on this squad of Inters, again mainly for KT. Early days on them however. I've not had much spare time and what I have has been spent on TW Attila, which I got for about £5 off steam and I've enjoyed much more than I expected, new Hearthstone EXP and yesterday there was a big patch for Stellaris! WHY!

I'd like to get these guys done by the new year. Well maybe just into it.

Or March.

Wow six done already. Enough for a football team (probably?).

It dawned on me the other day that your take on Reivers is reminiscent of the old RT era scouts (Advanced Space Crusade) with knives and pistols esp. the mohawk gentleman.

Bare heads with facepaint, asymmetrical shoulder pads, strange leg design. The only thing missing is those puffy slashed sleeve things. Was this all planned from the start? Are you a Cylon? Mind blown.

Great work though. Looking forward to facing both these and freshly painted Incestigators on the table. Stupid effing shock grenades though urgh.

Nice progress. Now that we can, you going to put a power fist on an intercessor? I’m a little torqued that they get all the CC love on their sarges, but the reivers, who could really use it, don’t. C’est la vie.

Even with them being kinda sub-par, the reivers are growing on me. Your scout scheme helps a lot with that. If a box doesn’t show up under the tree, I think one might be headed my way via gift cards in the new year.

Yes I think the 2nd squad will get a bit of fisting action. I'd like to put one on a officer really...Reivers really need a complete rework.

They would be cool with melta bombs, power fists, Inferno pistols and a ap value on knives. I live in hope. Codex next year right?

They are going to be unchanged until they either gets parts in an accessory kit, a limited release model, or a new box. The whole no model, no rules thing. Not saying it won’t happen, but I wouldn’t hold your breath.

IIRC you can put a ‘fist on a primaris captain, you just need to give him a plasma pistol at the same time. One of the special event captains had that load, so they made rules, I kinda want to grab 5 more intercessors just to gussy some up with bling and the special gear from the limited releases. Not that I need more captains...

Surprised they didn't do an updated datasheet for the Captain. Still I hope for a new book this year to deal with all this gibberish.

So the CA18 points happened and it was good but not enough. Initially I was happy with the drops then I realized most armies were basically getting the same amount trimmed off. My 2k SM lists went down by about 150 pts, yay I think, not a big amount but welcome. Then I check my standard 1.5k IG list which went down 120pts. IG don't really need the help. Whilst I agree with some of the re balances there are numerous buffs to units which don't need them (tank commanders for instance). Altogether very random. My 'everything' SM list went down from 7500 to 6900 odd and the IG 5400 to 4900. SO the IG are still the winners.

*sigh*

Getting there. I hope to do a bit tonight but I running out of time this year now.

I also found a copy of Conquest (for once!), this will give me 2 more Inters, 2 HBlasters and another Inceptor. I will stockpile these for now. I'll wait for the other sprues from DI to emerge over time. I'm getting some Primaris but only when cheap (or basically free, like Wake the Dead).

From a spin perspective I can understand lowering everyone’s points, rather than nerfing the handful of broken units. Everyone feels like they win, and now you get to include a few more units into your 2,000 point list. Of course, you need to go buy them... But I’d rather they just upped the points on the ones that needed it. Which they did for a few things, but for the most part, everything went down. Which is crazy. We are getting to the point where unless we go fractional, it’s going to be hard to separate the costs of some units.

It might just be the fact they they are larger, with less bling, but your highlighting is really standing out on those primaris. I know you work very dark with a pronounced edge, but it just leaps out on these guys. You change your pattern, or is it all in the models? Not a bad look, just stuck me in these pics.

Partly the lighting and partly a new camera (-phone) I think. It's the same recipe but that always varies depending on execution. But the extra size does make it easier to see it all I think. I will do another layer of highlighting on the blue yet, probably two.

I have also been talking to MLCS about 'thinning my paints'. I never do this but I can see it's application for getting a softer edge when edging (lol). I will do it for the next layer of highlighting.

Hello.

I'm still stumbling about after a surprisingly heavy Xmas and next it's my birthday (of a certain age) party next weekend which promises to be more heavy. In this brief period of lucidity I've managed to finish off (Ooooh er readers) these Inters...

This guy will be in the KT as a Comms Specialist with Auspex (now the FAQ allows it). This makes him a pretty useful dude especially when standing next to the AGL guy...I can see some cock ups around his eye I may go back and fiddle with...bleh

Rifleman. Thus guy or the following dude can be the spod in the KT. I'm not sure if I should add the scratches-chipping onto these guys? Any thoughts? Part of me likes them pristine but a small amount of scratches can really help a sense of scale...again the eyes look like a bit of a tidy up is in order...

A slight conversion basically the arms of the above guy on the body of the abover guy...just trying to make it look less like a bunch of EtB models that it is..

I like how these guys came out and I have made some in-roads to the next 2 which will complete them as a 5 man Inter squad and my Primaris KT.

Hope you like. I'll be glad to get these 11 Primaris off the paint station, felt like a log jam for a while. I'm thinking new Captain or Comtemptor next...

I might try a little scratching and weathering on one and see how it looks. He could be the veteran specialist if you decide not to take it to the squad.

Hiya!

Fresh as a daisy after my weekend of fun I managed to do the last bits to these guys:

Sarge.

With Sarge bars.

AGL guy. A 'Demo' specialist for KT. Keeps punching well above his weight in games.

I built it out of a IG GL barrel and a SM Scout receiver and stock. I like it and think it works especially well for a KT specialist.

The others got a bit of a touch up and a slight amount of weathering..Pics don't quite do them justice but I'm sure you get the idea.

Squad. Swap one dude out for 2 Reivers and that's my KT. I managed a quick game at the weekend and they did well against a unfinished and ill prepared Chaos KT. Nice to play something different too.

In other news, in a combination of a joke/taunt/challenge MLCS and Mephistoned very generously got me one of these for my birthday:

I have been scheming how to make it look less 'Repulsive'. More on this at some point.

Squad’s looking ready to kill some xenos!

What don’t you like about the repulsor? The overly busy turret? The cluttered back? The excessive amount of guns?

My fix was to leave the kit off the back. Cluttered enough without it. Don’t have the launchers open on the turret. Keeps you WYSWYG without being obtrusive. Don’t bother with the spare stubber on the turret. Sure, it’s easy firepower, but stubbers have no place on marine tanks and you have plenty of guns anyway. If I had to do it over again, I might button up the turret and not have the gunner up there.

Another thought would be to take all the launchers off the top and place them on the hull somewhere. That would even out the profile a bit.

Just some thoughts. Have fun with it. I enjoyed mine, but then have a soft spot for grav tanks. YMMV.

Happy belated birthday!

I think it was mostly the shock to the system of the whole ordeal of Primaris being birthed. Specifically; I think the turret is poorly designed and looks like a toy. All the little boxes pointing in random directions stuck all over it, and the odd point defence style turrets over the 3 hatches. It's lucky 8th let you shoot without needing to measure from the gun/fire arcs. The hull looks too close to just being a Land Raider and why is it a grav tank, 'Fly' is obviously OP on a tank but why has it got it?

I think I will build it with the dakka gun in the turret and leave everything else off. I will do some rocket pods mounted facing forward off the side of the turret. Twin lasers on the hull and call it done I think.

This all IMHO obviously and I'm looking forward to building it after all that actually. This is what I mean by it being a taunt/challenge of a pressie. Still thanks again to MLCS and Mephi for their generosity, I will make something of it.

Intertestes are looking fantastic. Once again I want to draw attention to the quality of your bare heads because it seems like you've gone up a level in terms of skill. I know you chatted about your method just now in the thread but I'm sure I'm not the only one who would appreciate a more close up step by step type thing.

Re: that Repulsor. Yeah sorry about that. What do you get the Marine collector who has everything they want? Something they don't want of course!

I'm sure you will rise to the challenge. I reckon get those weird mini lascannons off the hull and onto sponsons. Along with your very reasonable plans to address the 7 different types of rocket it should be mostly ok... mostly.

Yes I'm looking forward to fiddling with it. And building my Repulsor. Not sure the sponsons would work, I think cleaner sides would make it look more ...something. I'm not sure I'd add the stowage even.

I guarantee there will be much demand for a faces tutorial - especially from the mostly-lurkers such as myself. I love an opportunity to see how another hobbyist approaches something such as faces (where we can all diverge in our approach significantly).

Love your take on the reivers btw - they look so much more convincing when painted in a wee bit more gritty scheme.

Hiya!

Here is the stirrings of my next project..my Ltd Ed Captain I got in 2014 amazingly. 5 years isn't toooooooooooooooo bad to get round to painting I suppose, hangs head in shame.

I am not a fan of the stock paint scheme so (surprisingly) did my own thing. He will be my 3rd Captain and will lead the 3rd Company, I don't use the standard red scheme, preferring a purple as it goes well with the company logo and looks classy (supposed to echo Imperial Purple {look it up}). The other 2 Captains are useful for alternate load outs but are painted ages ago (like before the blog era {BB} which is nearly 10 years now {OMG I need to get out more}) and I would like a more modern one.

Here we see the base coats and so get an idea of the colours. I will do the bolter all in silver as I think that will look cool and it will occasionally be 'The Primarch's Wrath' relic. I'm not yet sure what to do on his right (as we look) pauldron. I did a version of the Company logo on my 1st Captain but the weird lip projection might make that hard. A simple Upsilon might be the thing or personal heraldry or some sort. Answers on a postcard please.

DISASSEMBLE. Left him in bits for painting. I will do a thing for the head as promised. The base is built up a bit (and the dude is taller then the average 'classic' marine too) which should help him look imposing on the battlefield as he stands next to a bunch of tanks to co-ordinate their fire (sigh).

Hope you like.

In other news bolters got a bit better. Yay? It's like the other races are playing with AKs and SM have pointed sticks but GW, in their wisdom have now sharpened those sticks. Woo? Still it's moderately useful. I'm not sure why SM aren't allowed anything nice, improvements are made but timidly, Repulsors (for instance) came down in points a fair bit clocking in at 300pts ish now (in my config) Yay? But a Riptide is only 260 ish and is scientifically proven to be unkillable. Sigh. I hope a new Codex graces us this year as next year would be just too long away.

I've managed to survive the recent snows and have found a bit of time to crank out a bit more painting. Here is the face tutorial as requested (such as it is).

First of all take a SM head, other heads will not have the advanced physiology to handle this kind of painting. I've base coated the skin in 'Elf Flesh' analogue by Vallejo.

I've then washed it in a dilute old GW brown ink, though Argax would be fine.

Now an all over wash of Reikland..then 20 mins in the oven at gasmark 6..

Here we have repainted the basecoat colour back. I've thinned the colour reasonably and done a couple of coats. Try to stay to the raised areas but don't lose too much sleep over it.

Now do the most raised areas in a thinned 'Bleached bone' the vallejo version at least. I've filled in the teeth (also in BB, pure white makes them look too toothy) and eye. The pupil will give the whole model direction. If you cock it up just try again, it's worth getting it right. I've outlined bits in black ink too when a definate line is needed or to define areas, note splodge across lips.

Now I've added more shading with small amounts of Argax and Reikland, painted directly into the recesses. I've repainted the lip and added a super thin wash of Mephiston red. Too much and he'll look like a cross dresser (which I have no problems with, just not on this guy). I did crow's feet in the corner of his eyes with black ink and then Argax.

Try the head in-situ occasionally too. The body is nearing completion, still unsure what to do on his pauldron..

Working on the other bits too, hair and bionics..I'll keep tinkering with the face, adding tiny areas of wash, tidying up the mistakes from that with BB highlights, then tidying up that with more inks. Areas that need to be very separate get black ink, this isn't Nuln oil as that's not black enough. Vallejo do a good copy of OG GW ink, that is like Indian ink and will give a very definite line.

At some point you'll have to make yourself stop and call it done. Here Is where I ended and I'm still thinking about going back to bits.

Hope that helps. Not claiming to be a big deal or anything but I was requested to show my process (which is pretty standard and WD will show similar stuff).

So close on this guy now. Still need to decide his shoulder design, leaning towards trying to do the 3rd Co. logo (Sword through Nid head) but am unsure....It's nice to be painting a single model too, don't do that very often. Goes quick even though I've been doing this guy to a higher standard.

Hope you like it all and let me know if this helps.

xx

Bristol!

Hiya!

Finished my new Captain! I'm pleased with him.

Big silver storm bolter, I like the 'Primarch's Wrath' relic, so I imagine that's what he's got here. Couldn't think of anything to write on his leg scroll so it got the uninspired 'Ultra'.

Tried writing 'Scourge' on his fist until I discovered there isn't really room. Should've repainted, couldn't be arsed. I had to stop somewhere with this guy, constant temptation to fiddle with bits.

Needs moar skullz?

Here we can see the Captains through the ages (bar my mothballed RT/2nd Ed Army, which I will do some pics of eventually, if only for the 'Flashback Friday' thread). On the left is 'Gabriel' my first for this 'new' army. I still like the conversion of him holding his helmet (ooh er readers), was surprisingly difficult to get all the angles right. Mostly made from the old SM Captain set. The rightmost guy, 'Ivor (Biggun)' was the upgunned version. The body is from the OG 'Masters of the Chapter' box converted to be holding an OG Gray Knight Force Halberd as a real 'Relic Blade' and a storm bolter for close encounters. Some of the conversion work was a bit old and I wanted a cheaper but still fighty Captain hence the new guy. Now, due to chapter approved, they cost the same. Still a recent paint job is much better. They probably span about 6-7 years or so. Maybe more, cannot remember when I did the 1st guy.

Still, hope you like them, let me know what you think. I need to find a name for the new guy, the chin and sneer as well as the shoulder eagle make me think of Judge Dredd, so maybe Captain Dredd? Or Elvis?

Next up:

This guy just had his bath.
