I havent liked Fire Prisms until now, because they seemed too expensive for what they may do. Its 160 points for a Prism with Stones and Field... And allthough you may reroll hit-results, the possible outcomes all arent really good:

- The Prism will be destroyed / immobilized=destroyed / weapon destroyed=useless / shaken=useless at least for a turn

What the Prism really needs isnt Holofields imo. Its something else people have to shoot instead! First thing that comes to mind is ... two other Prisms   and with naked Prisms you get pretty much 3 for 2  (3x115 vs 2x160).

Now that thats sorted out, the next natural choice is more Skimmers aka Wave Serpents. With a possible load of aspect Warriors these are definately  higher on the target priority list, so you get into a win/win situation. If opponents shoot at Serpents your Prisms saved a lot of points for defensive wargear. If opponents shoot the Prisms thats even better since it means the much pricier Serpents will deliver their load.

Upgrades aren't a luxury for Eldar, they're a necessity.

Naked prisms are just as easy to shake as holofielded ones. But they're also hugely easier to destroy, immobilize and knock the gun off of. Most opponents will easily have the extra heavy weapon that it takes to shake the third prism, and then knock out the other two and come out way ahead versus the same situation with holofields.

Space marine armies can be stripped down and still function, but not Eldar.

I think it is an interesting idea. You can still take two striped prisms and it save a bunch of points for other things that could give your oponent problems. Also, at 115 points I would not mind as much them being shaken or even destroyed. I do think the key would be to have other things that those heavy weapons feel should be shot first because of being more dangerous or more expensive. I will have to try a list with this....

I played against an excellent player in my area (Adepticon Iron Man champ, 2nd in the gladiator) and he did exactly what you are proposing.

The two Fire Prisms were stupidly cheap with only spirit stones, and they fired the tiwnlinked super shot every turn and stayed out of range of my heavy weapons. If it were not for two droping units they would have had their way with me all game as my static shooty units were unable to fire back at them due to being out of range.

I got fairly lucky with both dropping units rolling a hit on the scatter and managing to score a glancing 4 and 5, destroying one and taking the weapon off of the other. Which kept me in the game. If either unit would have scattered out of firing range/LOS or had failed to glance the skimmer, they would have been anhilated the next turn.

After thinking about it, i would say that the upgrades are not mandatory Vs. certain armies. A force with no mobile heavy weapons, or weapons with limited range will never hit you as you can stay away from them and fire all game. Baring bad luck, a stunned skimmer can just hide or move out of range, and the other skimmer can come out and fire. Against an army with deepstriking enemy tank units or fast anti tank units (raiders, speeders, etc.) take the upgrades as you will utilize them.

In a all purpose RTT list, i think you are right on the money though in that if you have 5 wave serpants with Aspect warriors in them rushing the enemy lines, they will be a more immediate threat that will absorb the majority of enemy AT fire. After seeing the nearly naked Fire Prisms used intelligently, i say they are deffinately a feasible option.
