Subject: Urban Basing Bits - Any suggestions?...

I'm wanting to give my Vostroyans an urban feel by basing them on bases similar to those in the Cities of Death rulebook. I'm especially looking for extra bitz like those found in the Urban Basing Kit to use for my characters that I'm placing on 40mm bases. Any suggestions on models or kits that would provide good bitz for such a project?

If you know someone that builds kits that are cast from the Hirst Arts Molds, the left over blocks can be broken up with a hammer, and the shards can be attached to the base. Some of them will have a smoother man-made textured appearance, and others will look like they've been broken off from a building or a statute or something like that. I use those pieces in combination with beach sand (because it does not have uniform texture) and some modeling balast.
Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

Which bits are you looking to replace?
For the large slate bits, I like to use vinyl floor tiles (like the ones used in high schools). It's soft enough to carve like wood, and develops a very jagged, rocky face when cracked. Perfect for smashed tile floors (score the tile lines, then crack & mutilate). Best of all, a 12x12 tile is all of $.66 at Home Depot.
For the resin detail, have you tried shaving the details off of the COD plastic frames?

Gale Force nine makes a pretty good concrete. A tub of it is about $9 and has all the chunks of concrete you could ever need. As for decorative bits, like the resin in the basing kit, I've never been able to find any.

Go to HomeDepot, Lowes or wherever. Buy the cheapest ceramic floor tile you can. Put it in a cloth or paper sack/bag. Proceded to vent frustration over GW pricing with a hammer against the tiles. Continue for at least 5 minutes, whenever your arm gets tires or until frustration runs out (this last promises the longest bashing time). Voila, rubble. This method is copyright protected and I expect a check will be forthcoming if you use it. ender502

any powder polyfilla lying about? mix it up to a pouring consistency and pur into a flat shallow bowl (an old one - an ice cream tub is good) and leave to dry, when completeyl solid (perhaps 24-36 hrs) lift out the block and break it up, you'll get jagged edges and perfect edges to stand on. very cheap, simple and strong hope this helps SC

Not as funny nor as fast as Ender's awesome suggestion above, I've used chopped up bits of old sprue. One evening I sat down with a bunch of old sprues, a pair of side clippers and filled a margarine tub full while watching a movie. This, plus random bits of plastic shapes (I-beams, L-beams, rods, tubes etc..), wire and scrap bitz are what I used to base my Daemonhunters to good effect. This past summer I believe the Black Gobbo mentioned using old fashioned meat grinder to chew up a bunch of sprue to create a lot of rubble quickly for a CoD table, though that might be a little overkill here.

I have the rubble taken care of. It's the identifiable bits in the rubble that I'm looking for I'm looking for something along the line of the resin bitz in GW's Urban Basing Kit

For identifible bits you may want to try some kinda odd sources. First, and not so odd, check out the standard model lines. I am sure there is a train kit that will have what you want. Verlinder has all kinds of neat kits of military equipment that might work. Secons, try Michaels or Joanne's Fabrics (or whatever "craft" store is near you) and check out the now post-cristmas reduced prices on the "christmas' villages. There are some crazy deals to be found... Street lamps... sections of wall... Gates.... All kinds of neat junk. Third, check out your local version of "The Dollar Store" ... bunches of odd junk ends up there. I have so many "christmas village" hedges you wouldn't believe it. ender502
