What would this army look like? At 1750, you are stuck with three HQ's, and each one then needs a retinue of wolf guard to drop with right? Well, one of the HQ's will prolly be the Ven Dread, but would you want your characters to be Battle Leaders or Rune Priests, and would you rather have them in Terminator Armor?

I have been looking at this possibility as well in my search for a "shooty" assault force. I think #'s of bodies and #'s of plasma would be your friend in a SW drop pod force. I would go for wolf guard battle leaders (rune priests just aren't as good as librarians) witha retinue that includes several plasma pistols. You can go for a terminator with donkey cannon but the price begins to get prohibitive after the fist one. I though SW were boned at 1850 points in a tourney. 1750 just makes it worse. ender502

I would take 2 battle leaders with 4 WG retinue in terminator armor, 2 asscannon, 2 stormbolter and all power weapons. Leave the battle leader with his power armor and give him a wolf pelt, so when they get charged after landing, you got a maniac swinging with 6 attacks.
The major point investment is in the wolf guard retinues, your payin 25 points per mode, but for 5 points more they can have terminator armor is a good deal. Your paying so much for that retinue anyways, might as well make them last longer.

Your paying so much for that retinue anyways, might as well make them last longer. A retinue member with termie armor, power weapon and storm bolter will run you over 40 points. If you want a power fist then you are looking at the unfortunate side of 50 points per model. Considering how many HQ you need to take I think you would be better off foregoing the assault cannon and going for #'s in power armor. Have one (maybe two) guy with powerfist and plasma pistol, throw in another or two plasma pistols and the rest are just meat shields. I love termies but I am not convinced they work in #'s with a podding SW force. ender502

Also remember that your WG unit needs to be 6 strong to have 2 heavy weapons.
I guess my question is, how do people build strong Space Wolf drop armies that maximize the effectiveness of your HQ's?

I have to check, but IIRC heavy weapons for WG is one out of every three, rounded up. So 4 WG should be allowed to have 2 heavies. As for terminators vs power armored WG. I see it as if your going to drop pod the retinue, your committed to spend over 300 points. Whats 20 points more into that mess? You might as well make sure they stick around for a while. You can always make up the numbers with grey hunters. On the turn they land, they are no worse than WGs.

Yes, WG round up for heavy weapons. A popular way to go seems to be WGBL in termie armor w/4 WG termies for retinue. Retinue w/termie armor, runic charms, 2x pw/combi-plas, 2x pf/asscan. WGBL w/termie armor, runic charms, combi-plas or asscan (depending on rules interpretation) and frost weapon.
A mate of mine suggested dropping the two pw/combi-plas WG for 4 WG w/combi-plas and runic charms. That's a devestating first turn strike, and mixed armor rules means that they'll go down first. Either way you're looking at 400+ pts, tho.
Another way to go is if you have bikers in your list, go WGBL on a bike. MUCH cheaper, and adds quite a bit of rapid response punch.

Can't Space Wolf characters drop by themselves in a Pod? The FAQ says to follow the Space Wolf list of models who can use Drop Pods, and the Wolf Codex says "any Space Marine model in power or Terminator armour" can use Pods. Since the Wolf Codex doesn't list "Command Squad" like the regular Marine Codex as a necessity to use Drop Pods and all that.
It's a little goofy having a Wolf Lord riding by himself, but it's better then paying out the nose for a retinue which is awfully expensive and not all that great.

Interesting thought. Probably not practical but.... I would rather go for masses of power armor WG. Those SW termies get pricey fast. ender502

ender, if you're looking for a shooty assault force... blood angels are the way to go right now. Their termies are cheaper than space wolf ones, and get furious charge. Add onto this the fact that you can still fire the assault cannons when you rage, an assault squad with feel no pain, free power fists.... and a couple more assault squads for a counter punch, and you got an army that can shoot the enemy to death and then sweep up what's left in combat
