Can anyone point out to me what people have used for penal legion units?

I was thinking conscripts, but it seems that a bunch of disgraced Guardsmen would have better stat's.

Then I was thinking of A regular Ifantry platoon, but then again. It seems they would be armed to well....

What to do....any alternate army lists anyone know of that would work out?

Or the classic "counts as"

I was thinking maybe....LATD? But then again....geezz

Any help would be great thanks!

Conscripts are a popular choice. I know they have more limited stats, but that can be explained by poor equptment, rather than inherent flaws. The other options would be Witchhunter Zealots (not sure if they can be taken as allies), Kroot (stronger and better fighters, but no weapon options), or even Col. Shafer's last chancers.

Well...what would you like them to do?

You want some elite hardened troopers for your regular IG? Just take the 'Veterans' option.

You want some crazy suicide elite dudes? Schaeffer's Last Chancers (you can even make 'human bombs' with the rules for demo charges). AND you can do a full army with Schaeffer, if you wanted.

You want regular guardsmen who are just really 'ard as nails, and everyone hates? Afriel Strain.

You want broken fodder? Either conscripts or LATD.

You want insane close combat monsters who care nothing for their lives? Zealots from the WH rulebook (guarded by Arbites and Inquisitors, natch).

You want guys living out their sentence welded into their armor and forced to fight else they die (kinda like whatshername's boyfriend from Battle Angel Alita), watched over by their inquisitorial wardens? Space Marine Scouts or DH Stormtroopers.

Hope that helps.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

Unfortunately, the good Colonel does not waive the mandatory Command Platoon.

When soldiers think, it's called routing.

Actually, he does. Provided, that is, you take only he and Last Chancers and nothing else.

That being the case, you can easily make a solely Last Chancers army at 750 points, can stretch it out to 1,000 points, and, at absolutely ludricous extremes, just about make it to 1,750 points with only Last Chancers. (Five Chimerae all decked out with everything, each worth around 150+ points each; Schaeffer and Kage, worth 110; then 20 Last Chancers, upgraded to specialists, given the maximum 10 points of weaponry and the maximum 15 points of wargear, worth 41 points each.)

On the other hand, however, if you do take Last Chancers as a supplement force and take at least 16 of them (I think), then you don't have to take any Troops.

Ironically, they do. So do cheats.
