Tough-as-Nails Ork Boy
|
Well I just finished my tyranid swarm army and I sat down to play some good ol Dawn of War, Dark Crusade, and got to thinking. How well do orks do in shooting? Usually thats what I do in DoW. Given all the upgrades (more dakka, even more dakka, more blasterier) ork shoota boyz do 70-80 damage, which can wither down even hardy necrons. So I got to thinking.......What about a shooting ork table top army? Lots of shoota boyz, some orkish artillery, and a big ol squiggoth weapon platform. I've never before looked at an ork codex and want to the next time im in The Game Room (local shop) so anyone orkish want to tell me about it so I dont have to wait?

Orks are strange shooters. That is the only way to put it. I think they are BS2, and that means they hit on 5+. Plusses are that I think they are strength 4 guns, and with squads of 30, that is many many dice. They die in droves, that you must know, and to get large squads they must be foot slogging, so they will get shot at alot. I wouldnt try it, but hey, it could work if you worked at it.

Spine guants are better in all respects. Leaves more points for nastier meaner hitters too. Try 192 spine guants if you must do a horde shooty army.
Orks will die in droves to any shooty army. Hitting on 5's, and giving saves is no great way to do it. Stick with choppas, Madboyz, or better yet just avoid them until a new book comes.

Orks can shoot more and farther than bugs, and Grots catch bullets cheaper.

Orks can be a pretty good shooty army. They don't do so well against and mainly shooty army though. And facing anything MEQ the slugga bloys are always the better choice. Its just as fluffy as a cc ork horde and they don't do too bad in cc if they're in large mobs. Using the Death Skull clan list could greatly improve the survivability of the shoota boys without having to spend points or slots on grots. Three of four units of 20 shoota boys with 3 rokkits/b shootas is nothing to laugh at. I've found that big gunz are rarely worth it. A gargantuan squiggoth is a good gun platform and even better at keeping a maxed unit of flashgits save while still allowing them to fire. A looted Russ or Bassy is almost required. Dreads and kans are good gun platforms while being able to lend assault support as they walk up with the boys. Bikes are too pricey and buggys are excellent.

Look at the battle reports section and the most recent article about orks and try to tell me thier not shooty. Orks can be super shooty if done right.

I once thought that a squad of 10 Banshees in hard cover, with Fortune, would be able to survive against a volley from a mob of 25 Shoota Boyz.
Wrong.
Sure, on average BS2 only get 1/3 hits; but with 50 dice, a little luck can go a long way.

Shoota Boyz suck, they're better in CC than they are at shooting. They die like normal Orks and they can't hit for crap. What's worse is that Sluggas get 3 Special weapons too, which is where the majority of the damage from the unit comes anyway. BS2 hurts that much.

Posted By orks gone wild on 02/20/2007 11:26 AM Yes but BS 3 now you got some shoota boys.... take mad boys and give each pigdoc a rokket...! Feral Ork rules are questionable at this point. You can use them in friendly games until the new codex comes out but there are rumors that most of the list and rules will be dropped in the new codex. They are also not legal at any Games Workshop tournaments in the US or UK. And if you're going to make a Feral list, you shouldn't bother with Huntas and go with MadBoyz instead, they're better overall.

The Grand Tournament page begs to differ. From the GT site: Changes to Lists allowed at Grand Tournaments and Games Day Tournaments: Due to unforseen circumstances, we have removed three lists (and rules) from those previously allowed for Grand Tournaments and Games Day Tournaments. These lists (and rules) are: Ghark Ironskin and the Ogre Rhinox Riders, Imperial Guard Armored Companies, and Feral Orks. We understand that these changes may cause concern for those players who had planned to run these armies at our events this year and for this we apologise. If you have already purchased a ticket for one of our Grand Tournaments or Games Day Tournaments and feel the need to have your ticket refunded please contact our Direct Services team at 1-800-394-GAME. Not a lot of room for interpretation there.

Is This List Official? This list was legal for the 2006 U.S. Grand Tournament, whether it or not it will be in the 2007 tournament season remains to be seen. If you wish to use this list in Rogue Trader or other Tournaments, we recommend you check with the tournament organizers first. Tournament legality aside, these are fun rules and we hope players enjoy using them in games.
maybe this is what I was reading.... I've spent a huge amount of time and energy geting together 3500 pnts of feral/ snakebite Boyz 95% of witch is pianted. I hope thier rules live on....This would be the last straw for me I think.

Just because the rules are not being used in the GT/ GD events doesn't mean you won't be able to use them for local friendly play (oh god the triple negatives! ) You might even be able to use Feral Orks in local RTTs, though they usually stick with the GT/ GD rules packets. But I agree, it sucks that one of the few effective ork builds is being pulled from the tourney scene. Hopefully you should be able to find use for the same figs in a Speed Freak or footsloggin Ork Dex list and perhaps Ferals will be incorporated into the new army list, whenever that is (re: 2008 or beyond)

I did use them in a local RT and did allright.
what do you think of my list? should I drop a sty boy in each mad boy list and pick up an ammo runt?
also are huntas worth it? At Bs 3 2 rokkits seem the way to go...
