After playing really aggressive mobile armies for a while, I thought it might be fun to get back to my roots and try out a static shooty marine army.  I've had a lot of color and conversion ideas build up, so it's going to be a crusade army, meaning that each squad will be painted in different chapter colors, with a common crusade shoulder-badge.  Rules-wise, however, it will just be a standard marine army with traits.

I wanted an army that could throw out a tremendous amount of firepower at long-range, and I've wanted to put a lot of heavy bolters in a list for a long time, so I'm really excited about throwing 24 heavy bolters down on the table.  That's 72 shots a turn!  The army is also enormous, with 85 marines, which should present a huge problem for most of my opponants, most of whom are simply not going to have enough firepower to make any real dent in my swarm in only six turns of shooting.  The Elite Devastators have infiltrate, not because I plan to use it often, but because you have to give them either infiltrate or tanks hunters, and infiltrate seemed slightly more useful to me in quarters-type missions, but I'm perfectly willing to change it to tank hunters if you guys think it will work better.

This army is designed for basic league-night throw downs, so the idea is to worry about objectives only after inflicting huge casualties on my opponant.  I've been playing Shooty Imperial Guard for a while now, so this army really functions on a similar principal, which is not to advance until you start running out of targets.

The HQ choice is there to give all the units leadership 10.  I gave him some mobility to be somewhat effective as a counter-charge unit, but mainly he's included because I have to take an HQ choice.  If it was up to me I wouldn't have taken an HQ choice at all, but at least this way he's doing something on the field.

Like I said, I've been playing guard for a while now, so I've got a lot of practice in preventing assaulters from consolidating into new units, and general picket-line defense tactics.  One of the things I like about this list is that it will force most opponants to come to me, since at long range this army can outshoot 99% of the armies out there.

This army also rules in escalation situations.

Man, that's the joy of Anime! To revel in the complete and utter wastefullness of making an unstoppable nuclear-powered combat andriod in the shape of a cute little girl, who has the ability to fall in love and wears an enormous bow in her hair.

Interesting list. I haven't written or reviewed a marine list in ages, but this list has very serious firepower. It would definately make an IG player cry... like me.

Wow, that's a lot of heavy bolters! I doubt many ork players will even bother playing against this list. Anything that survives into HTH will mop up, tho. You'll hate infiltrating daemonbombing armies (that get first turn, anyways) and the speeded infiltrated Nurgle manreaper lord of dooom!

Hey Doctor Thunder,

Looks like a nasty list. There are some problems though. You don't have much against Indirect Fire. And in 2000 points, I dare say you're AT fire is lacking. A mech Eldar of Tau player will not be impressed by 6 Lascannons. Also, the very limited assault specs will prove vulnerable against fast CC armies. Mnemoch mentioned a Daemonbomb, I think this will be one of the most annoying opponents for you. In 2000 points, my standard army is this:

<address>172 - Daemon Prince: Stature, Flight, Essence, Resilience, Accursed Crozius, CCWMoCU, Frags, Bionics</address> <address> </address> <address>145 - Lieutenant: Bike, Melta, Daemonic Armour, MoCU, Pers Icon, Lightning Claw</address> <address> </address> <address>70 - Obliterator</address> <address> </address> <address>115 - 5 CSM, Bolters, Las/Plas, MoCU, Icon, Infiltrate </address> <address> </address> <address> <address>115 - 5 CSM, Bolters, Las/Plas, MoCU, Icon, Infiltrate</address> <address> </address> <address>106 - 5 CSM, BP/CCW, Autoc/Flam, MoCU, Icon, Infiltrate</address> </address> <address> </address> <address>208 - 8 Bloodletters</address> <address> </address> <address>90 - 6 Daemonettes</address> <address> </address> <address>90 - 6 Daemonettes</address> <address> </address> <address>90 - 6 Daemonettes</address> <address> </address> <address>120 - 8 Furies</address> <address> </address> <address>168 - 6 Mounted Daemonettes</address> <address> </address> <address>160 - 4 Bikers, Melta/Plasma, MoCU, Icon</address> <address> </address> <address>175 - Defiler, IF</address> <address> </address> <address>175 - Defiler, IF</address> <address> </address> <address>1999 points, 64 Models, 5 Fast units, 6 Daemon units. </address>

This army has 6 Summoning Icons, IMHO impossible for you to kill all in one turn of shooting, or - with any terrain - even in two. So you will have to deal with a bunch of Daemon squads in your lines. It also has two IF Defilers which you have no way of dealing with if they can deploy behind terrain.

The motto behind me telling you this? Well, you have a good list going, but for tournies it is limited in power due to the static aspect of it.

Anyway, good hunting, let us know how you are doing with the army.

Cilithan, out...

Trim the Dev squads down to 6 each, dropping a heavy bolter from each. If you're married to Infiltrate, fine, but getting closer to the enemy with heavy-weapon squads is of the bad. I'd trade off the HBs in the Elites for MLs, and trade Infiltrate for Tank Hunters. Get rid of all the crap on the Master; one lone combat guy in this army is spitting into a tidal wave. Now, fit as many mutli-melta speeders (or Tornados) as you can manage into it. Toss in a Librarian for good measure.

I've run almost this exact army before, and it can be potent; you have to avoid the temptation to split up the army OR its fire, though.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake;
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I think this is too limited, heavy bolter marines are a bit expensive for bulk purchase just for a gimic list. Though you could convert a few easily enough.

It will also get boring to play with or against, you have only one unit that has any mobility. The rest just line up and roll obnoxious numbers of dice. Some opponents wouldnt stand a chance, others would walk all over you.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

I wonder how this SAFH Marine List would do against an Ork SPEED FREAKS Army. By Turn 2, they are all over you like white on rice.

Doctor Thunder, I think your keyboard must be sticky. I know you couldn't have meant to create a 2000 pt. marine army out of just four of the same units.
