Great game to get your Hero or villian fix on.  Anybody here play?  I am on Justice usually running a toon called Starbringer.

I heart SYR 8766

For all your bravado, if the US Army decided to invade, Wisconsin is it?, in force supported by a heavy bombing campaign for the month before, weeks of shelling from battleships on Lake Superior, and a full tank thrust (crushing the cows beneath the treads), I don't think that your .22 is going to make much of a difference really... Asmodai (my new hero)

At some point these sorts of decision-making skills lump you into the same camp as the Lehman Brothers, the White Star Line shipping company, and mothers who smoke during pregnancy.

You can usually find me on Virtue, playing as Adamantium, Jumble or Lightrune (Heroes), or as Dr. Macabre, Ma Barker or Shriekback (Villains).

I used to play. But I'm back in DAoC with my brother and some friends.

I played for a bit as well. I thinked I stopped a bit after the CoV Beta, but I had fun with it while I played.

They do a real nice job of keeping your interest with special events like Double XP weekend, events around each holiday where you can get special items or powers. Its nice to see that they realize that even though they are the only Superhero game in town, they work to keep your money coming in.

I use to play a lot, but I got sick of killing purse snatchers, and miscelaneous gang guys...  The unique event content was fun, but the excruciating debt/kill mechnism made playing with a pick up group risky and frustrating, beyond the seriously demoralizing penalty it was already..

Once World of Warcraft came out I converted over and have never looked back. Say what you will about content, (Super Heros are pretty fun) WoW has it all over CoH.

The addition of loot and items ads so much to the game I can hardly think about playing CoH anymore.

Charcters change with every piece of gear you equip visually.

There are loads of vanity options to change your look, or have a pet, including whole classes of fighting and purely visual and even mounts.

Dynamic content, and holiday events are also superb.

Guild mechanisms, grouping, PVP, and arenas are interesting (and optional) and well executed.

A well managed in game economy and crafting professions abound and it really ads a lot of depth and play life and provides yet another mechanism for positive player interaction and cooperation.

WoW>>CoH

For the record my 2 characters were Cream Puff (A giant Cyborg Blaster Guy, and Soul Survivor, an Angelic Empath).  I could never get over the fact that city of HEROS had like 15 types of horns to use, but no Halo... and that the largest expansion to visual character looks to come out, was sox, skirts, high heels and fishnets?  I have never seen so many super hero school girls (it was like a manga fest when I quit playing that game)... Ah well, I hear it has evolved some more since about a year ago.

(Sorry for the critique, enjoy it, and good luck! I heard they finally did wings, someone showed me recently and I was really imprssed with the effects! To each his own.)

Lol, yes, to each their own definitely... I recently quit WoW to go back to CoH/CoV, and haven't looked back since.

The addition of loot and items has caused MAJOR hassles within guilds and groups once you start raiding...

A costume respec, or the addition of an extra costume slot gives your character many unique looks (as opposed to Dwarf2030568 wearing Judgement armor... they really need to get dyes in WoW so you can at least change your armor color, but that's another story)...

No mounts in CoH, but pets are coming as a veteran reward... and when you can fly yourself, do you really need a horse?

True, the beating on the bad guys sometimes seems boring... but so does beating on yet more Orcs or Kobolds (but they're higher level, right?)... as far as I can see, all games experience this.  And when it comes to Raids/Task Forces, I find it easier to have a mixed group in a Task Force than in WoW Raids (we don't have 3 pallies for this boss? Damn, that's the raid, folks!)...

Dynamic content in CoH (I've noticed many earlier missions changing from their humble beginnings, as well as supergroup revamps), and the holiday events are also very well done; who doesn't like trick or treating at doors on Hallowe'en?

Supergroup bases, PvP zones, and Arenas (in which you can use henchman to battle for you) also well done...

No real player economy in CoH (at least, not that I've participated in), but that's one of it's strengths, as far as I'm concerned... I got tired of being wiped in PvP by twinks that could afford to buy their alternate characters all the purples FTW!...

Inventions are set to be added, hopefully in Issue 9, so we'll see what they add to CoH.  As for character interaction, I've had nothing but good things to say about pick up groups in CoH/CoV, and nothing but decency from the people playing.   In WoW, however, I have received more insults and derision in the past few months than I've received in 2 and a half years of City...

Like you said, Augustus, it really is each to their own...

Yes trick or treating was awesome!

To each his own, I like the content of your reply very much, good points, reminded me of a lot of things I really like about CoH.  Furthermore, I bet reading our points may really put a good perspective on both games for the reader. who hasn't played either, or gotten very far in just one.  That said, here are a few answering points:

I don't like the travel powers in COH, everyone took one, so in effect everyone was flying, super running or teleporting, because it was convenient to get from zone to zone, the train helped, but I like the Wow mechanism of griffin points and mounts better, I suppose they are fairly similar, but I remember many exchanges, not quite negative, but off a bit, where I was constantly asked, "where are you?", or "whats your travel power?", and I used to have to say: does it look like this 2000lb 8 foot robot could fly?  Basically everyone has to take a travel power, no one can be Batman, and just walk around...  Now if they had vehicles, like the Batmobile, and you could design them, they'd have it over WoW...

The addition of loot and items has caused MAJOR hassles within guilds and groups once you start raiding...

Boy is that true, getting big gear at level 60 required 39 other people to help you and entire online communities with wierd rules cropped up overnight to see who got what...  But they changed that, there are no more 40 man raids in the expnasion, and all the huge gear was invalidated over night with burning crusade, all my guildmates are replacing their old stuff, with common (green) items now adays, and even the big players, have their rewards from PVP, or use things that dropped.  It has changed.  Besides, I know people who have played for 2 years, and still haven't got even one L60.  Depends what your in it for.

No real player economy in CoH (at least, not that I've participated in), but that's one of it's strengths, as far as I'm concerned... I got tired of being wiped in PvP by twinks that could afford to buy their alternate characters all the purples FTW!...

Well, they are fixing that too, enchants now have a level requirement for a weapon, so no more putting a huge flaming death enchant on a tiny little toothpick.  Also, the PVP customization, and end game epic gear really aren't issues for most of the game, to the average player they are irrelevant.  It's really nice for the entire game, if you put on a red shirt you can see it, if you drink something you have a stien, if you get new armor it makes you look different... It's like the old Diablo lust for loot.  Can't Have the Woot without the loot. Heros just walk around looking the same for whole stretches of levels, like 1-20 right before you can even buy a costume or change your look at all.

I've had nothing but good things to say about pick up groups in CoH/CoV, and nothing but decency from the people playing.

Well that's great to hear! My experience was not necesarily unfriendly, but because of the steep penalty of experience debt, dying was a very bad thing, and in groups it happened a lot, when a party got overwhelmed, maliciously or otherwise.  It was agony to have to level entire levels at 1/2 xp, just because you had tried to help the wrong people out, or because you were unlcuky...

they really need to get dyes in WoW so you can at least change your armor color, but that's another story)...

You couldn't be more right, high level characters often look similar because they have the same gear.  I have a lot of suggestions for improvements to an MMORPG, but this one is really a good one, its probably the only bright point in Guild Wars...

Here are some suggestions for general interest:

???

All MMORPGS need to fix what I call spawnbush, or Ambush by Respawns who appear in a players zone of control, it happens in COH and it happens in WOW, I have no idea whay they can't add a randomizer to at least make new bad guys move their spawn point so its outside a players agro cone. ???

Why not add vehicles to COH/COV?

Why not let crafters in WOW repair (restore durability to)  the item types (plate Mail leather cloth etc.) they can create, with some input mats?

For all MMORPGS Why not add character damage to 3d visuals? For example, criticaly wounded characters ought to slump, or damaged armor ought to look blackened, or be missing pieces.

Why not add theme songs to Superheros in COH/COV (at a certain level, you can compose/pick a few second little tune.)

Why don't WoW characters say anything when they taunt or battlecry or charge, they animate yelling, but theres no sound?  Even the Diablo Barbarian had a sound when he jumped/charged?

Why can't Wow characters fight from their mounts in some (limited, slowed down) capacity?

***All just thoughts***

???

Thanks for the response, Augustus; it's nice to see things from two perspectives, like you said.

Personally, I will most likely go back to WoW at some point (my wife likes the fantasy genre more than superheros, so we try to share both)... probably after the zerg rush in the Outlands is over!

Not sure what it was like on the server you were on, but if you really wanted to be on Virtue without a travel power, there were a host of Taxibots (PC supergroup that teleported players around) that got you from place to place; not sure if/how much they charged, though...

Yeah, I've heard from guildmates that the new Instances are quicker and less constraining in terms of numbers needed.  A big step in the right direction, and something that will help to lure me back...

Glad to hear they're changing the enchantments on toothpicks issue, too... that one always picked  me (pun intended)...

Vehicles would be very nice; not really sure if Cryptic is thinking of this one or not, but perhaps I'll have to sneak over to their forums to ask...

I think the damaged look would be a framerate issue; I know that's one of the main reasons they don't have stretching powers in CoH.  I guess they tried, but the framerates needed to do the powers smoothly killed them... and the framerate thing would kill me, too... as it is, we can play both WoW and CoH on dial up (all we're able to access, unfortunately), but big raids can slow us up considerably.

Anyway, thanks for the responses... my wife said to say that she thought both of our opinions were well thought out, and gave a good accounting for both games!

Oh, and I don't play WoW sipmly because it is WAY too reminiscent of Evercrack for me. (Haven't played EQ in over 3 years and I'm STILL utterly burnt out on it.)

Dark Ages of Camelot. I never play these games to their high-endgames, but
this one has some of the greatest pvp for me. I didn't like the WoW instances, or
Arena combat. Sure, it made things "fair", but in Camelot you have this high
tension "Gotta kill these guys before we get jammed up by other groups" feel,
which is both good and bad.

Also, because Camelot's so old now, it has a lot of the problems of the other
games with aggravating treadmills and pve and looting issues. What can I
say, I'm just really drawn to watching the combat animations go off...

I would play CoH or CoV, but the game doesn't like my laptop's vid card. Seeing as how I'm not paying a ton of money to get a new laptop to play CoH, I guess I'll have to stick with WoW.
