Okay.. so.. This is, probably, the first army I've ever actually constructed, for Eldar definately. The 500pts is low, but its mainly for a small campaign for me and a few friends, so we can all get used to our new armies and such, so nothing large or major. I'll be up against an Ork player, a Tau and a Necron. So everybody, please, tear this army to little itty bitty shreds. Mock and ridicule and destroy every inch of it, in the hopes that it'll grow better than before. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance

Farseer;
-55pts
-Guide; 20pts
= 75pts

Rangers;
-19pts x 5 = 95pts

Dire Avengers;
-12pts x 8 = 108pts

Striking Scorpions;
-16pts x 5 = 80pts
+ Exarch = 12pts
== 92pts

Warp Spiders;
-22pts x 5= 110pts
+ Exarch = 12pts
+ Additional Death Spinner = 5pts
== 127pts

497pts

Thats pretty much it. As I said, my first Eldar army, so any help is appreciated. I sitll have to buy everything, as I currently own no Eldar models, so there arent really much in terms of limits or constraints.. I was thinking about taking out the Scorpions for some Banshees; weaker, but faster movement, even if its only for a bit. Whats everybodies thoughts? I used to have two squds of 5 Rangers rather than the Avengers, but I thought perhaps the Avengers would be more applicable to the army, maybe even more effective. So.. anybody wanting to lend a newbie a hand?

Pathfinders are much stronger than rangers for the points. Also 6 pathfinders is more than 1/5 as strong as 5 (even numbers are better in general because of the scoring unit rule, but in the case of pathfinders, the sixth guy also gives you a better break point on the odds of getting wounding hits).

The problem with untransported banshees is that they're going to have to move across the board, and they'll be a priority target. You can expect to see a lot of high-volume, AP 4 firepower at 500 points, so it's doubtful they'd make it to HtH. Scorpions are a little better at being in the open.

Also bear in mind that a 500 point army is not going to play like a bigger army (especially if you're playing 4X4 tables). At 500 points you could take nothing but half pathfinders and half warp spiders and you'd be nearly unbeatable. But both pathfinders and warp spiders become less powerful once you get up to about 1500 points.

What other models do you own? You're taking exarchs in squads but then you aren't buying fun stuff like exarch abilities.

I was considering upgradingn the Rangers to Pathfinders, but the extra cost per model was putting me off.. 25 points to upgrade a squad of 5 Rangers (+5 points a model) seemed like an awful amount, and if it meant removing other models from the list, it might entirely destroy my general effectivity, even if it increases a specific use.. It might make them far better at shooting, but then (playing Orks) HtH might become a serious issue..

Would it be worth it to drop the Avengers entirely, and split the points between upgrading the Rangers, and getting some Guardians on the field, but in a small number (a heavy-weapons esqe team, whose main tactic is to stay back and simply shoot using the Heavy Weapons Platform)? Any extra points would be spread about the other squads (if there was any)

I was mainly taking Exarchs for the additional statlines.. You think it would be more effective to simply drop the Exarchs, and see if I can use the points to bump up the squads somewhat?

Sazzlefrats; I am yet to purchase any physical items yet. I'm far too anal (*giggle*) in my personality to simply go out, buy some units that I like, and then design an army. I was to know what I'm going to need, so I can go ahead and buy those models, and sort all that out. Yeah, I'm a pretty awkward person to know..
