Not really when it comes to consoles, though. 8 vs. 8 is the standard on CoD, which is the most played multiplayer game on consoles. I like this for Space Marine, as I think it will lend itself to quicker, more intense matches, rather than drawn out, sometimes dull, matches like BF.

I have to say, that even though I was planning on getting this game regardless, the last few videos released have really got me super excited. Can't wait for the release. I hope it does well enough to warrant the franchise they have stated they want to create around it.

You can never beat your first time. The second generation is shinier, stronger, faster and superior in every regard save one, and it's an unfair criticism to level, but it simply can't be as original. - Andy Chambers, on the evolution of Games Workshop games

10 v 10 is the maximum console team size for CoD. 6 v 6 is the standard team deathmatch. Halo has a maximum of 8 v 8 in Big Team Battle, and it gets fairly hectic, so 8 v 8 as standard is welcome.

Yeah, they're pretty small games, and it blows.

Me? I think 12v12 is a small game. 16v16 is a good sized game, but it could still get larger.

10v10 would work better than 8v8 though, one squad against one squad.

The Star Wars Battlefront connection is more from the game type (capture command posts as primary goal.. that was the main gametype in the old game) and the general feel overall including the speed characters move, the speed and visual effects of bullets, and the ability to run and roll from the videos. The assault marine jump pack speed/use reminds me of the dark trooper from there too. I played the hell out of that game so its a compliment when I say it about Space Marine.

I still play the hell outta that game. So good.

As to this, I'm super psyched. I have a Game Stop gift card to use up still, so it's convenient that my Space Wolves are there!

Depends on your platform. As a Console gamer, 10 v10 is huge, 8 v 8 is big, so I like that 8 v 8 is the standard size. They may well double that for a big team mode.

Right, the horrible controls and movement found in console FPS games is probably the leading cause of the small match sizes.

The main reason consoles are used to tiny game matches (seriously, 8v8 is TINY!) is because they mostly do P2P, which sucks so hard for mid-sized matches like 16v16.

I'm pretty sure that Sony has demonstrated the ability to do much larger matches, though to be honest, I'm not sure how well that particular game ran or was reviewed/received.

I think it also used dedicated servers, which are a rarity in consoles, but theyr'e thankfully getting more common.

Never played it, but MAG is supposed to be up to 256 players online.

Seems to be ok according to the reviews just a bit buggy.

This would be pretty cool for Chapter v Chapter battles

MAG has a lot of die-hard fans-- no other FPS game allows for such huge, well-coordinated battles.

Leave it to the woman to chime in that size matters.

I've actually played CoD as 12 v 12 a few months back strangely. I joined an xbox live game and noticed more people running around and brought up the player list... and just my side filled almost the entire page instead of the half that it usually did. I think IW was testing something out as I heard they were trying out larger games with the old software on Kotaku but it wasn't supposed to be Hardcore Team Deathmatch. I think the game size matters depending on the type of game. I don't think I could enjoy Gears of War on too big of a map with more than 6 per side as its a very up close in your face type of game. The same thing seems true for this one also in the sense that most of the action will be close up compared to COD or BF.

TF2 is also relatively short range (hell its melee mechanics are better developed than many 3PS games), and it works best at 16v16. Global Agenda also has large battles, IIRC, and they're excessively fun It depends on map design and class mobility.

Ehh I prefer 12v12 on most maps but on big maps 32 players can be a ton of fun (although competitive is 6v6)

Still cant wait for this game. I hope its moddable

Are the multiplayer skins dependant on preorder location?

E.g If I buy from Steam I get the Blood Ravens skin, if I buy from Amazon I get the Black Legion - is that campaign only or for both Multi and Single?

Yeah, competitive is almost universally stupid like that, and not just for TF2. TF2 is not a game meant or balanced for small server populations.

On MAG;

It ran great. The gameplay was *meh* in my opinion (Sold it for black ops, wasn't playing it and wanted zombies), but you CAN do large games on consoles (At least on PS3). The size of the battle was always good, but you never really knew how BIG that game was until the last objective of the 256 games, where everyone fought for a central point with the objectives in it.

Agreed - they usually tack something like that on and then say "yes our game has co-op". If it has real co-op, I'll buy a second copy for my wife to play alongside me.

Aw, someone sounds upset.

8v8 is fine with me, although I wouldn't be against 10v10 or 12v12, anything larger I don't prefer.

I stand corrected. THQ published the game, but they didn't design it, KUJU Entertainment did. THQ/Relic is both designing and publishing Space Marine.

If I'm not mistaken, Kuju no longer exists. Which is just as well. THQ and Relic have been the 40k dream team.

I agree. The only problems I've had with relic are technical issues. Company of Heroes was rife with connectivity problems, and some of thse crept onto the second Dawn of War series, since they were I.E. the same game engine.

Not upset at all. Just find FPS on anything but a PC to be complete fail. And I'm not talking out of my as I own a Wii and 360. But there's just no comparing the experience to a basic mouse and keyboard. And when the PC is concerned, 32 players is the norm for max players at release.

THQ has been quite mum about co-op play and this is some probably preorder card or promotional insert that leaks the info that co-op apparently will be in the game. It looks like it will be DLC that hopefully comes "free" with every new copy of the game via a code. If you buy the game used and want to play co-op, you'll have to pay extra for it as used games won't have an unused code generally.
